Normally the Klingon had a fluid, rolling gait, almost a swagger, but now he moved more slowly and hesitantly, as if testing each movement to see how much it would hurt before completing it. He was a warrior, and none of the effort or pain showed on his face, which stayed completely undisturbed. But the subtle signs were there for all to see. "You wanted to see me, Captain?" Kyran asked in a half-growl. "Please be seated, Commander," the Vulcan CO said, indicating the chair opposite him. Slowly, Kyran lowered himself down, managing to avoid wincing openly as he did so. Once he was fully seated, though, he slumped back, trying equally hard to hide his relief at being off his feet. "Dr. Mpondo has sent me a rather alarming summary of your condition," Sovak said, carefully observing Kyran's every move. "He wants to remove you from duty for the next two days because you might re-injure yourself. Having served with you for some time now, I must say his fears in that respect are not only justified, but sound almost like prophecy." "You're not being fair, sir," Kyran protested half-heartedly. The anger welled up inside him. "Unfortunately," the Vulcan continued, ignoring Kyran's objection, "I need every available crew member I can get right now, and to be without the services of my Security Chief, despite the competence of your staff, would be a crippling blow. I have the power to override Dr. Mpondo's recommendations, although to go against the advice of the chief medical officer is usually not a good idea. So I am faced with an untenable situation either way." Kyran sat there silently, wishing robo-Vulcan could get to the point in less than a thousand words or a twenty-minute lecture, whichever was longer. "Therefore, I have made a decision. I would ask you whether you thought you were fit for duty if that weren't the equivalent of a rhetorical question. You are still able to move, therefore your Klingon sense of pride would force you to answer yes. I'm willing to accept that answer, given how much I need you....... on one condition." Kyran just stared at Sovak for a moment or two before reluctantly taking the bait: "And what might that be, Captain?" "If your injury starts to interfere with the effective performance of your duty, you will immediately report to Sickbay and turn over command to someone else." "No problem, sir," declared the security chief confidently, amazed it had been this easy. "I want your word as a Klingon warrior on this, Kyran," Sovak demanded, leaning forward and locking eyes with him. "If I have to relieve you, I can no longer rely on you, and in the present dire circumstances in which we find ourselves, that is unacceptable. So I want you to consider your next words very carefully." So robo-Vulcan was getting clever on him, eh? Kyran hesitated, hating to give his word, knowing he would then be honor-bound to take care of himself. Who would have ever thought Vulcans could be so devious? "Very well, Captain," he said grudgingly at last, though it pained him more than his wound in some ways to say it. "You have my word of honor that I will relieve myself rather than let my condition interfere with my duties. Is that acceptable?" "Yes, it is, Commander," responded Sovak, sitting back in his chair. "I fully expect to be in battle with the Dalriada within twenty-four hours, and I am counting on your experience and warrior spirit to help carry us through." "That's kind of an odd thing for someone like you to say, sir," noted Kyran, raising one eyebrow. "Nevertheless, it is true. I am a scholar, not a warrior, but I will do the best that I can, and I need all the help I can get. I hope I can count on yours." "You'll have it, sir," Kyran promptly reassured him, wondering how he had been maneuvered into expressing unqualified support for an individual he felt was totally out of his depth. On top of giving his word that he would take care of himself. "Good. Dismissed." The abrupt end of their conversation left Kyran shaking his head as he made his slow, painful exit from the ready room. Though he hated to admit it, perhaps there was some hope for Sovak after all. He had been maneuvered into supporting the very officer he had tried to have removed from command not even 3 days ago. *Command is definetly changing him.* Kyran thought as he walked back on to the bridge. Upon his return, he quickly relieved LT(jg) Jack Danger from his spot. "Lieutenant, ensure that every available Security Officer and Enlisted is gathered for a meeting in 3 hours." "Aye sir." Danger said, turning to the turbolift. "Kyran to Phaser." He said, not wanting to do the task he knew he must. [Phaser here, sir.] He could hear the tension in the kid's voice. This was going to be tougher than he thought. But, after the revelation that RADM Phaser was in fact a traitor, working for the Dalriada, he knew that there was the possibility that the younger Phaser followed in his father's footsteps, or could be swayed to do so. "I need you to meet me in the Observation Lounge in one hour. Kyran out." [Yes sir.] Jimmy Phaser answered with a resigned tone in his voice. This was it, they were going to lock him in the brig for the crimes of his father. But, then again, this was Kyran, and that was the Klingon custom. Children for up to seven generations felt the ramifications of their father's actions. Kyran knew he had to keep an eye on Talon, and now Phaser also. Things were going to be more difficult than they had ever been before. "Commander Kyran, might I have a word with you?" He heard a voice from behind him. Turning, he saw Gabriel Phoenix on the bridge, looking worried over something. Kyran thought he had an idea what it was about, but, was not 100% certain. "In private?" He asked. "Yes, sir." "Good. After your shift, meet me in my quarters. There we can discuss what we need to." Kyran said, after having walked over closer to the Nav Officer, so their small conversation would not be overheard. *************************************************************** [NRPG] Well, I started this but JP finished it, so you can consider this a joint post.
