It's not that Sovak was the type to seek attention, and he fully understood how overwhelmed the Sickbay staff was at the moment. There were over twenty different wounded crewmen within his immediate range of vision, and there just simply wasn't enough trained personnel to go around. As far as the Vulcan could tell, they seemed to be doing a good job attending to the most critical cases and still somehow managing to give the less-wounded some temporary care, but he was far from qualified to render a professional judgement. There was Dr. Kenfald, working frantically on someone who looked liked they had lost an entire leg, and her assistant Dr. Downie seemed equally busy. Although no one had responded when Sovak called for an emergency medical team to the bridge, his roving gaze did not spot the other two doctors, so it was logical to infer they had been called elsewhere, stretching the medical staff even further. Still, when the acting Captain walked in holding an unconscious woman whose face was literally a mask of blood, somehow he expected to someone to notice him. "Corpsman!" Sovak said sharply as a med tech rushed by, intent on some other emergency. Reluctantly, the man stopped, though it was obvious he would have preferred to ignore the command. When he turned and realized just who he was speaking to, though, he immediately straightened up a little and replied with a wary: "Yes, sir?" Nodding down at the inert body of Ensign Robinson in his arms, Sovak raised his eyebrow in a wordless question. "Uh..... right over here, Commander," the corpsman belatedly replied, directing Sovak to what looked like the only empty diagnostic bed available. "Captain," the Vulcan absently corrected, gently laying his burden down. He did not see the look of astonishment and resentment directed at his back, because by the time Sovak turned around, the man wore only an expression of professional concern, running a tricorder rapidly over the new patient. Sovak waited patiently for a few seconds, noting the frown that crossed the man's face, before he asked: "Will she survive?" "I..... think so, sir," was the hesitant answer, "but I have to get a doctor before I could confirm that." "Understood," responded the Vulcan unemotionally. Almost immediately, the med tech moved away, but Sovak lingered a moment or two longer, staring down at the wounded young woman lying before him. She had done a fine job under extraordinary circumstances, and it was somehow reassuring to know he would not be losing her. Every life saved now was a gain, he thought, raising his eyes to once again allow them to traverse over the hectic and tragic scene that Sickbay had become. So many had been lost today, he knew, that every one preserved was a small victory. And here is where the real battles would be fought, and the most important ones. "May the One be with you all," mouthed the acting Captain silently, then turned and slipped out before anyone else even noticed his presence. And this time, that was just the way he wanted it. ********************************************** [NRPG] Actually, this started out as the opening scene of a longer post in progress, but since I had to consult others, I figured I'd just send this out alone. Don't get too used to these tiny little posts, though. FMD 6.1715 Sovak visits Sickbay Tim Greg: No response required. Sovak just ghosts in and out of Sickbay. JP/Jeff: working on the response, and I'll try to have it done ny the end of the weekend. Dennis: Nice job.
