From alton.reich@snet.net Mon Jun 29 12:09:41 1998 Date: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 08:03:55 -0400 From: Alton and Elizabeth Reich To: distribution:@snet.net; (see end of body) Subject: USS YAMATO: A Greeting in Passing SD: 100627.0800 FMD:8.0950 The YAMATO sped toward SB OMEGA at warp 8, and CAPT Isaac Stern was happy to be returning to the base that passed for home out on the frontier. The cloaking device was off for security reasons, he wasn't even sure if his fellow COs were supposed to know of its presence on his ship. In addition it gave the engineers time to begin working on stablizing the power supply for the device before they even docked at OMEGA. "CAPT, I'm detecting several ships patrolling the area between us and OMEGA," LT D'artgnan announced. "Nice of Brooks to send out the welcome wagon for us," CMDR Connor said. "I doubt they're here for us," Isaac replied, "I'd guess there out here for the Dalriada when they finally arrive. LT, can you identify the welcoming comittee?" "Aye, sir. I'm detecting the AGINCOURT and the... PROMETHEUS," Bregnan said. He turned slightly and grinned at Isaac, "I'd recommend doing a close fly- by and waving at Sovak, sir." Isaac grinned in return and said, "I'd like to remind you that he's now CAPT Sovak, LT." Bregnan turned forward again and muttered, "He'll always be Robo-Vulcan to me." Alex leaned forward and whispered, "Sovak's a bit stiff, Sir?" "Duranium is more flexible, XO," Isaac said equally quietly. The he said loud enough to hear, "LT M'gan take us out of warp and let's see if we can find out what BATRON 9 is up to these days." "CAPT the AGINCOURT is hailing us," Bregnan said. "Looks like they aren't waiting for us," Isaac said while standing up, "put CAPT Farthington through." The somewhat overweight commander of the AGINCOURT and BATRON 9 appeared on the viewscreen, "CAPT Stern BATRON 9 welcomes you back to SB OMEGA." "Thank you Comodore, it's good to be back. We're returning to OMEGA for some minor repairs and then we'll be back to join you." "We'll be sure to keep the Dalriada at bay until you can return. Farthington out." The viewscreen returned to showing the Terebellum system and Isaac turned to walk back to his seat. He took 2 steps and stopped. He turned back toward the screen and said, "LT D'artgnan, hail the PROMETHEUS." After a moment the Vulcan Captain of the PROMETHEUS appeared on the viewscreen. "Sovak!" exclaimed Stern with a wide grin, "I was surprised to find you out here with the welcoming committee." "Captain Stern," replied Sovak with a formal nod, "Despite your perceptions to the contrary, we are not a 'welcoming comittee.' We are patroling this portion of the system in an effort to detect the Dalriada as soon as possible if they attack SB OMEGA." "It's nice to see command hasn't changed you a bit. Sorry to hear about Captain Slick, though. He was a damned fine officer and a good friend." "Your condolences are appreciated, Captain," Sovak acknowledged shortly. "I heard about the battle, brief as it was," Isaac continued, "Based on what I've seen the Dalriada have fire power to spare." "Their ships do seem to be highly optimized for combat," Sovak conceeded. Isaac's tone sobered, "You be sure to bring her back in one piece, CAPT. She's a good ship." "She is indeed." Isaac paused, debating internally for a moment, "Sovak, we were at Burrakis." The Vulcan was surprised, but the only outward expression was a raised eyebrow, "I would think the system would be heavily defended, CAPT Stern." "It was, how shall I put this, a target rich environment. To be honest, CAPT, if I could have found a way to destroy Burrakis and keep the Dalriada from mining the Burrasite, I would have." "That would have been an irrational act. Our conflict is not with the long dead Burrakans, and destroying the planet would have kept us from their archaeological legacy forever." "I understand how you feel, Sovak, and I couldn't think of a way to do it anyway." "CAPT Stern, I don't feel anything. I was merely..." Isaac held up his hand to cut Sovak off, "Sorry, CAPT, but we have to get back to OMEGA and get the YAMATO repaired. I just wanted to congradulate you, and let you know that if I find you messing up my old ship again, I'd come back and kick your butt." "Not only would such behavior be undignified and disrespectful, sir," the Vulcan told him, "but it is inappropriate for a Federation officer, especially the commander of a starship." Stern chuckled again, shook his head and commented, "Someday, Sovak, you're going to learn not to take everything so literally. It's too bad I won't be around to see it." "Serving aboard a starship crewed almost exclusively with illogical beings, Captain," the PROMETHEUS' CO said, "it seems I have little choice but to try and understand their idiosyncrasies as best I may. However, I do hope that I will not come to emulate their behavior." "On that I agree. You'd make a terrible human." "Thank you, Captain," responded Sovak dryly. Isaac nodded, "Good luck and good hunting, CAPT Sovak. You take care of that ship and my old crew." "I will accept your good wishes, illogical though they might be," Sovak acknowledged, raising his hand in the Vulcan salute. "Live long and prosper, Captain Stern." "Why, thank you, Sovak" Stern answered, genuine surprise on his face. "YAMATO out." The viewscreen showed the system again and Isaac returned to his seat. "LT M'gan, get us back to OMEGA, warp 4." NRPG: A short joint post from Tim Tyson and I. As I stated in my NPRG message, I'll be away for a week. Try to keep the story going folks. Either Pat or Josh or Vickie should get us back to OMEGA so we can get our new crew members aboard and get the fight going.
