Deep in the cargo area, a small box lay hidden behind some crates.
Indescript, its only feature a small dark bulb. Then suddenly, in response
to a preprogrammed instruction, the bulb began to flash red.
 
Unbeknownst to the young Ensign that had placed it there, a practical joke
was now going to have consequences far outside his bet. The original
mission had been to play 'tag' with another Federation vessel. An Ensign
from this vessel had managed to smuggle on board a signal box that would
emit a very narrow beam on an unusual frequency. This was to help catch the
Yamato on maneuvers. 

It still might.
