I must blank my mind. I must be free of the ....Go please./ Alex found his fist tightening in frustration. /Goddamit Lisa. This is not the time. We need you. I need you. I need you to be OK./ For a while the fog seemed to clear. Lisa's automatic hate reaction to any male being aggressive was tempered by humour, & concern, & maybe something else. /Don't these things always happen at the strangest times./ It sounded like a quote. Then Alex realized why it sounded strange. A contraction. Don't. /Alex...?/ /Yes./ /Trust me, I know what I do./ A trickle of laughter ran through his mind. /If you came near me now, I would kill you. ... If it is any consolation, I would be sorry about it./ /Wonderful. So what do we do?/ /If you are prepared to take the risk, I am prepared to let you. I can dope you up with all the things I need to take from you. It will be exhausting, but it should leave us both OK./ /Should? What if it doesn't work?/ / It leaves me dead, & you with a seriously vacant brain./ /& if we wait till this is over./ /Jules would make a wonderful CMO./ /Great. So why not do it now?/ /Because I am not that sort of girl. It would be, well, yuck. Seriously, I must concentrate my thoughts on the past. & that takes a little longer than a quick handshake./ /Jules said it would take 24 hours./ /It normally takes 36. I can cut it down, to 8. That is the minimum./ /8? I suppose I can get 8./ /The decision is yours. I am ... I will.... I......./ Alex felt her mind go blank. Then a thud. He resisted the urge to go in to her. He could picture her, lying unconscious against the door. Seeing the replacement guard take her post, Alex started back to his post. /Alex?/ It was a sleepy call like someone fighting sleep./Is the captain?/ Shame came over the link. Then .....sleep.
