From alton.reich@snet.net Sun Jun 7 11:10:19 1998 Date: Sun, 01 Mar 1998 08:49:11 -0500 From: Alton and Elizabeth Reich To: distribution:@snet.net; (see end of body) Subject: USS YAMATO: Ready to Go! Newsgroups: alt.starfleet.rpg SD: 100301.0800 NRGP: A few notes to start with. I was writing this post and about 3/4th done last night when the power went out. The screams of anguish could be heard in Boston, I think. I have re-created it as best I could. I would strongly encourage you to take about 15 minutes and check out the web page Jeff J. set up on the Dalraida. I learned some new things and the PROMETHEUS had 2 encounters with them. The web page is at: The YAMATO plays a crucial role in the beginning of the fleet-wide mission and the page contains information that will allow us to do what we need to do. I have every confidence that we'll do fine. One final word on mission dates: I told Jeff J. that I was assuming that the briefing Stern and Connor got from ADM Brooks took place at MD: 1.0630. We will use that unless I hear differently. If Jeff wants us to make a change we'll adjust the timeline accordingly. Remember MD's are not something carved in stone, and if we need to change the order of things or make other minor adjustments, we will. MD's are a tool, and I don't want them getting in the way of someone's abaility to post. If you have ANY problems, please bring them to my attention. Enough preaching - on to the post. *** [MD: 1.0630-ish] > He put on his duty uniform and headed for the holodeck. There he > waited for the exam officer to arrive and begin the test. The doors of the holodeck slid open and COB Harris walked in, "Morning LT Wolfe." "Good morning Chief, what can I do for you?" Wolfe asked. "Ah, the question should be what can I do for you," Harris replied. "What do you mean?" Morgan asked slightly confused. "CAPT Stern asked me to stop by and get you started on the bridge officer's exam. I guess with all the preparations for departure no one else has any time. I need to get to the bridge when I'm done here and make sure everything is ready for departure." "Well, I'm ready to begin." "Ok, but let me explain a little about the test. There are two parts. The first is a test of your knowledge of the ship and her systems. The computer will generate questions for you from a standard database that will involve identifying components, knowing what they do, and how the systems they are in function. As the CEO you should eat that part up," Harris said. Morgan nodded, "I know this ship better than anyone. When can I take that part?" "You can start whenever you want. You might want to study a bit, but you can start at any time. All you have to do is identify yourself to the computer and tell it you want to take the first part of the exam. It'll do the rest." Morgan nodded, "What's the second part?" "That's the harder part. One of the senior officers, probably CMDR Connor will give you a scenario and a problem to solve. You've got to find the right solution. That's the hard part. When you're done with part 1, just let the Captain know." "Thanks Chief." "No problem. Do you have any other questions?" *** [MD: 1.0700 - Engineering] LT Bal sat at the control panel in the MMP interface control room waiting for a diagnostic to finish. After a few minutes the computer said cheerily, "Diagnostic complete." Bal looked at the status panel and saw three red indicators in a row, "What a complete piece of crap!," he exclaimed. The door to the control room slid open and Chief VanDelsie stepped in, "ENS Hibiki was wondering how you were progressing," she said with a smile. "You can tell ENS Hibiki that he can take his concern for my progress and shove it where the sun don't shine." "Ouch! We're a Ferengi in a foul mood this morning." "I've been here since 0200. First I had to make sure the base engineeers didn't dent the hull while docking the MMP. Then I've been debugging for the last 3 hours." "Debugging?" Rebecca asked, "But this isn't the first time the YAMATO has had an MMP docked?" "The last mission they took a sensor pod. The only thing the computer had to do was turn on a sensor and set up a data stream. A second year engineering student at the academy could write that code. With the weapons pod up there the computer has to feed targeting data in real time, interface with the torpedo loading mechanism, and work with the power management system for the phasers. I found half a dozen software errors." "And those?" Rebecca asked gesturing toward the 3 red indicators. "They are definately not software errors, but the torpedo handling mechanism is not responding. I therefore have only one choice," Bal said standing, slinging a toolkit over his shoulder and walking over to the access hatch. "Cover me Chief, I'm going in." "I'll let you know when they turn green." "Won't ENS Hibiki be waiting for you to return?" Rebecca shrugged, "I told him I'd report back when I'd found out what's up. So far I don't know any more than I did when I arrived." "This hopefully won't take long since I really need some sleep," Bal said. His hand touched the control and the door slid open. He stepped into the closet-like recess and began to climb the ladder that ran up the umbilical between the ship and the MMP. After climbing about 20 meters he reached the hatch seperating the MMP from the ship. He pressed his thumb to the contact by the hatch. The YAMATO's computer checked his identity against the access list, noted his entry and slid two hatches, one part of the ship structure and the other part of the MMP, aside. Like the ship the MMP was full of a network of Jefferies tubes that provided access to the various systems and circuits that filled it. These tubes converged in a small control room at the top of the main access trunk. Bal began his search for the guilty in that control room. About 15 minutes after Bal had left her, the indicators that Rebecca VanDelsie suddenly turned green. "Chief VanDelsie to LT Bal. I don't know what you did, but it worked." [Construction engineers are stupid,] Bal said venomously. Rebecca laughed, "What was it?" [The primary power relays for the torpedo handling equipment was left in the 'test' mode. The relays were physically cut out of the circuit.] "Are you coming back down?" [In a few minutes. I just want to check a few other key pieces of equipment.] "Ok, I'll wait for you. VanDelsie out." *** [MD: 1.0800- Bridge] CAPT Stern and CMDR Connor stepped off the turbolift on to the bridge of the YAMATO. "Captain on the bridge!" some nameless NPC yelled. Isaac vowed that one day he would track down that NPC and arrange a horrible death for him. "At ease!" Isaac called before anyone really had a chance to come to attention. He and Alex made their way down the port side of the horseshoe to the forward part of the bridge. LT D'artgnan turned the center seat toward them and stood. "Status report, LT," Isaac said. "We've been given priority clearance for departure, Sir. The ship is ready to depart and all crew members are aboard. LT Bal finally got the MMP functional. Reportedly the cries of angush could be heard as far away as deck 26." "LT, we don't have that many decks," Alex pointed out. "Of the PRMOETHEUS," Bregan finished, "Shall I contact the staff for a briefing?" Isaac chuckled and then sobered quickly, "Lets get underway before we get the staff together. LT D'artgnan, I relieve you." "I stand relieved," Bregan moved to take his place at the OPS panel. Isaac stepped in front of his chair, "LT D'artgnan, inform OMEGA Operations that we're prepared for departure." "OMEGA OPS has cleared us for departure." "LT M'gan, take us out," Isaac ordered. NRPG: Vickie: Please post our departure. You should set a course for the coordinates of the LEXINGTON at warp 9. Time is of the escence. The YAMATO will patrol the area between the LEX and the border. Les: Feel free to post some details of the exam. I've also given you some room to write some interaction between ENS Hibiki and LT Bal. Pat: I think I'll leave part 2 of the exam to you. You can bounce any ideas off of me if you'd like. Once we get under way, things will begin to happen. Remember, though, we will not meet up wiht Dalraidan warships until day 3, and even then it will be under specific conditions. Within those bounds, we're basiclly free to do whatever we want. One last thing: Has anyone heard from Jimmy? We'll probably need the Marines during this one, and I haven't heard from him at all.
