From alton.reich@snet.net Sun Jun 7 11:35:46 1998 Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 07:01:06 -0400 From: Alton and Elizabeth Reich To: distribution:@snet.net; (see end of body) Subject: USS YAMATO: Target Rich Environment Newsgroups: alt.starfleet.rpg SD: 100515.0630 NRPG: Josh Young is writting a post to follow-up Kris's last post, so there's a gap in the timeline. I was done with this so I sent it out. Please try not to be confused :) RPG: FMD: 7.1300 - Bridge, YAMATO The red lights around the perimeter of the bridge blinked rhythmicly. The Dalriadan ship they were approaching appeared to be totally unaware that they were there. CAPT Isaac Stern wasn't sure how the rest of his crew felt, but he was nervous as the YAMATO approached her target. "LT D'Artgnan, what is the status of the cloaking device?" Bregan looked to his right at the cloaking device readings. "The cloaking device is functioning normally," he reported. "LT Trisx, weapon status." "Weapons on stand-by, Sir," Trisx replied. "LT set forward flux torpedo tubes for simultaneous launch," Isaac ordered. "Aye, CAPT." "We're going to make a pass by that ship. We'll decloak within 100,000 Km and launch forward torpedoes. As we pass, we'll launch aft torpedoes if necessary," Isaac said. "The recycle time on the cloaking device is 30 seconds," CMDR Connor reminded him. "Hopefully, they won't have time to react and return fire, XO." Alex nodded, "Understood, Sir." "Helm," Isaac said, "Range to target?" "500,000 Km," LT M'gan reported. "The Dalriadan ship is making a course adjustment," LT Stephens reported, "They have turned 15 degrees to port." "LT M'gan adjust our course to compensate." "Compensating." "Time to decloak range?" Alex asked. "1.5 minutes," LT M'gan replied. "Arm flux torpedoes and lock on target," Isaac ordered. "CAPT, the targeting scanners will require 5 seconds for final target acquisition once we decloak the ship," LT Trisx reported. Isaac did the math in his head, the YAMATO would decloak 22 seconds away from their target. 5 seconds would be required for final target lock. The torpedoes would leave the ship with a velocity slightly greater than the YAMATO and would strike their target roughly after 10 seconds. They would have to wait 15 seconds before decloaking again, but their aft torpedo tubes would only bear on the target for 8 seconds before they could cloak. Was there enough time to juggle it all. Alex could see the wheels turning, "The timing is crucial, Sir," he said mirroring the Captain's thoughts. "I think we'll make it, XO. Range to target?" "200,000 Km," LT M'gan reported. "LT D'artgnan prepare to decloak the ship. LT Trisx prepare to fire on my mark." "Aye, Sir, standing by to disengage the cloaking device," Bregan replied, his voice steady. Isaac could feel the butterflies in his stomache take flight. He was hurtling toward his first real test as a CO at 30% the speed of light. "Helm, range to target?" "130,000 Km... 120,000... 110,000." Isaac began to issue orders in a carefully orchestrated sequence, "OPS, disengage cloaking device." "Aye, cloaking device is off line." "TAC lock on target and fire torpedoes when ready." LT Trisx's hands flew across her board, "Flux torpedoes locked on target. Firing forward flux torpedoes." A slight vibration moved through the deck, and on the viewscreen they could see 24 flux torpedoes streak toward their target. "OPS," Alex ordered, "Stand by to reactivate the cloaking device." The flux torpedoes left the ship in four groups and each group closed on a section of the ship slightly aft of the center. They slammed into the Dalriadan ship's gravitic shielding simultaneously. The shield generators reacted by increasing power in response. The flux torpedoes relaesed their matter/anti-matter charge and caused local temperatures to peak at levels only seen in the fusion furnaces of stars. All through the Dalriadan ship alarms began to sound, proximity sensors, weapons lock detectors, and finally the shield overload alarms. The shield generators amid ships overloaded and failed as one, but they had not dissapated the energy release from the salvo of torpedoes. The energy burst tore through the hull and melted layers of ablative armor in the process. A ball of white hot plasma slammed into the Dalriadan warp core and vaporized the housing, adding more fuel to the fire. >From the bridge of the YAMATO the Dalriadan ship seemed to be surrounded for the briefest instant by a white hot glow amidships, and then she began to come apart in an explosion that began in the middle and finished with the ends being hurtled away from the fireball in the middle. The bridge of the YAMATO was earily silent, and Isaac, suddenly aware that he had been holding it, slowly let out his breath. "LT M'gan, steer us clear of the debris. LT D'artgnan recloak the ship when ready," his voice rang out rock steady. They responded and the bridge began functioning again. "LT Stephens," Alex asked, "any sign we've been detected by the other ships?" "Not that I can see, Sir," she replied. "We're recloaked, CAPT," Bregan reported, "The cloaking device is working properly." "Very well. LT M'gan, set course 160, mark 15, one half impulse." "Aye, Sir. Course laid in." "Engage. LT Trisx, begin tracking our next target," Isaac ordered. *** [DSF Broadsword, FMD: 7.1330] The Dalriadan task force flag ship moved in a lazy orbit around Burrakis. In his office task force commander, CMDR Borak Thornton wished to be somewhere else. His fellows were leading attacks against the Federation, and he was stuck here, guarding a mining operation. If only there was some excitement, he thought. Meanwile, on the command deck, there was some excitement. "CMDR," the young Ensign at the comm station said, "We've lost contact with the DSF LYNX." The watch officer came out of his daydream and regarded the comm officer for a moment, "Try to raise them again." He did, "No response, Sir." "Very well, dispatch the DSF FALCON to investigate." *** [YAMATO - Ready Room, FMD: 7.1400] "Captain's personel log. Today this ship drew her first blood of the conflict. The ship and her crew performed admirably, and morale is high. There has been discussion of painting the silohuette of a Dalriadan ship on our hull before returning to OMEGA. LT D'artgnan assures me that such a practice dates back to Earth in the 20th century. I have not decided if I will allow this to happen. "My biggest concern is for what this conflict will do to all of us in the long run. A quick victory is good for morale, but a prolonged conflict can't be good for anyone. "We are scheduled to report in to INDIGO in 8 hours. In the meantime, we will carry out our orders to harrass the Dalriadan force in this system to the best of our ability. "A second target has been chosen and we are closing to attack. The Dalriadan have discovered the wreckage of our first target, but have not changed their patrol pattern yet. Perhaps they believe there was an accident? in any event, opportunity still exists and we will make the most of it. "Computer end recording." Isaac looked out the window of his ready room for a moment, sighed, and stood up. He straightened his uniform and walked out onto the bridge to lead another attack. Timeline: FMD: 7.1300 The attack on the first Dalriadan ship begins - Alton FMD: 7.1330 The Dalriada realize they have lost contact with one of their ships - Alton FMD: 7.1400 Log entry and lead in to next attack - Alton NRPG: Couple of things: 1. I have been working on filling our empty billets and things are finally progressing. I'll keep you posted as things happen. 2. As I said, Josh is filling in events before the attack. You should have his post soon. 3. Feel free to pick up with the next attack, or give your perspective on this one. What could possibly go wrong? 4. We need to wrap this up soon. I have one more post planned, and it will be out by next weekend. The big dance at OMEGA is coming. Any of you who did not get 2 posts from Jeff Jenkins about the NOVA need to e-mail me.
