Romulan Star Empire Desk

Status: Entente
Location: Rimward, Beta Quadrant
Threat: Moderate - Comparable technological development to UFP

Encompassing over half a million square light years of space, the Romulan Star Empire is a large interstellar empire dominated by a single species.  While slightly larger that the Klingon Empire in terms of total volume of space dominated the Romulans control fewer systems because stars are less dense in the region spanned by the Star Empire.  Moreover, the Romulan systems tend to be mineral poor.  This has led to some differences in technology.  For instance the Romulans use a quantum singularity, an artificial miniature black hole, for primary power generation rather than a dilithium mediated matter-antimatter reactor.  Each ship of the Star Empire is also correspondingly more costly to build and so virtually all are protected by cloaking devices.

Relations between the Federation and the Star Empire have traditionally been strained.  First contact in 2156 led to a war and the establishment of the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2160.  The Romulans and Klingons entered into an alliance in 2268 which resulted in the exchance of military technology and spacecraft designs.  The Romulans have gone into several periods of isolation when there was no contact with the Federation.  The most recent of these was from 2398 until 2406 during a Borg invasion of Romulan space.  It is still not clear what precipirated or ended the Borg invasion.

In 2407, the Romulans joined the Federation in the founding of Deep Space Station 12 to explore the Herod II wormhold in the Neutral Zone.  When the Dominion invaded the Beta Quadrant in 2408 and attacked Starbase Gamma, the Romulan Star Empire joined the Federation to repel the invaders.  Later that year, a formal agreement was reached that there would be a total cesation of hostilities between the United Federation of Planets and the Romulan Star Empire for the duration of the Dominion situation.  In 2413, with no visible threat from the Dominion for several years, the resolve of both sides to support the entente is beginning to weaken.

 Notes on Romulan ship classes

Battleships

Command (Battle) Cruisers

Battle Cruisers

  • T'liss-class Warship,
According to a number of intelligence sources, the T'liss (WARHAWK) Class battlecruiser appears to the primary reason the Romulans were able to drive off recent Borg attacks.  Despite the fact that she is only about 25% larger than the Morgai-Class heavy cruiser, these ships are much more heavily armed

Heavy Cruisers

  • Dhael-class Warship,
The dhael-class is a new, multi-role heavy cruiser inspired by design successes of the t'liss-class battlecruiser and created to replace the aging Morgai-class heavy cruiser.

  • Morgai-class Warship,
The Morgai (Eagle) Class Attack Cruiser is a design typical of Romulan design philosophy.  The ship has a form reminiscent of a bird.  Her graceful lines mask the functionality and capability of her design.

Light Cruisers

  • Deletham-class Warship,
The direct descendant of the Bird-of-Prey (BOP) design that the Romulans shared with the Klingons in the early 2300's.  While the Klingons were content with upgrading the internal systems, the Romulans have made vast improvements in the structure of the design as well.  The Deltham is significantly larger than the old BOP while maintaining a very similar form.  The Deltham is much better armed, owing to her 2 plasma torpedo launchers.

  • Sinae-class Warship,
The first completely new light cruiser in decades, the Sinae are designed for fast strike capabilities.

Destroyers

  • Vas'tagor-class Warship,
The venerable Vas'tagor class destroyer has been a component of the Romulan fleet for more than 40 years.  The design has been upgraded several times with new weapons and systems.  The V5 version of this class is still being produced in limited quantities, and it is believed that a successor is on the drawing boards.  No ships of this class still remain in service with the V1 hardware configuration.  Most of the ships in service are at least at the V3 level.

Frigates

  • Neirrh-class Warship,
The Kestral-class Frigates are small and very maneuverable, which made them very effective in the many skirmishes with the Borg in recent years.  The ships of this class show great variability in their weapons and defensive systems.  Many older ships of the class vary substantially from the standard configuration.  There were reports of Kestrel class ships being outfitted with a single plasma torpedo launcher.  There have even been unsubstantiated reports of Kestrel class ships being automated, packed with highly unstable protomatter and being used as large, high speed torpedoes against Borg cubes.
