Mongo's Machine Gun Pages Japanese Type 99 LMG Quick Change Barrel Mechanism
(Click on pictures for larger version)
The quick change barrel mechanism for the Type 99 LMG is unique from other LMGs. It incorporates a method for adjusting the head space of the gun though this was not possible in the field. There is a locking wedge that is perpendicular to the bore axis. This locking wedge is designed to be locked into position by screw it into threads located on the left side of the receiver. As the nut is tightened, the wedge forces the barrel farther back until its should contacts the front shoulder of the receiver. To adjust the headspace, shims would be mounted onto the front of the shoulder with small screws. This was done at the factory and was not adjustable in the field. This cut manufacturing time by not requiring as tight of tolerances and fit up of the gun.

The following procedure is used for changeling the barrel.
Weapons:
  1. Cock the action.
  2. Unscrew the barrel wedge retaining nut on the left side of the receiver.
  3. Withdraw the barrel locking wedge toward the left until it hits the stop.
  4. Using the barrel carry handle, withdraw the barrel from the front of the receiver.
  5. Install the barrel into the receiver until it is seated against the shoulder on the receiver.
  6. Push the barrel locking wedge into the receiver until the nut engages the threads.
  7. Tighten the nut.
