The quick change barrel system of the Stoner 63 weapon series allows the gun to be configured for a variety of missions. There are six different barrel models that were made by Cadillac Gage for the Stoner 63A. The six models consist of the rifle, carbine, automatic rifle (AR), light machine gun(LMG), and commando barrels. All of the barrels for the Stoner 63 series are of the quick change type. The barrel for the fixed machine gun is identical to the LMG barrel without the carry handle and front sight. The front sight assembly and bayonet lug for each barrel is mounted on the gas block except for the carbine barrel which has a separate bayonet lug mounted behind the gas block. The front site is elevation adjustable by screwing the front sight up or down similar to the M16. The front sight pin is a round pin and has five detent positions per rotation. The LMG, AR and commando barrels front sights can all be adjusted for windage with an allen wrench. The front sight is dove tailed onto the gas block and retained by the clamping force of a socket head bolt. This allows these barrels to remain sighted in even after they have been removed. The Stoner 63 series barrels do not have a gas piston assembly mounted on them like the M60. The gas block on the barrels have a plug which fits into the gas tube of the receiver. The gas plug has three split-rings on it for a gas seal. These rings appear similar to the bolt rings of the M16 but are non interchangeable. |

The flash hider, the same for all barrels, adds 1.67 inches to
the length of barrels, has 6 slots and is 22mm in diameter and designed
to launch the standard rifle grenades. The barrel
extension, in which the bolt locks into, appears similar to the M16 but
is also non interchangeable. The bolt in the Stoner 63A has heavier
locking lugs than the M16. The barrels made by Cadillac Gage for the
Stoner 63A are six groove with a right hand twist of one turn in twelve
inches. When NWM obtained the license to produce
the Stoner 63A, experiments with heavier bullets in barrels with a twist
of one in eight inches were manufactured. These barrels have "200MM"
marked on them indicating the twist rate in millimeters. The rifle and carbine barrels are 20.00 and 15.70 inches in length respectively and .64 inches in diameter. The rifle barrel has a gas shut off valve for launching rifle grenades but the carbine barrel does not. The automatic rifle, fixed machine gun and light machine gun barrels are 20.00 inches in length, 1.00 inches in diameter up to the carry handle mounting point and .875 inches in diameter in front of the carry handle mounting point. The AR barrel's front sight is offset to the left to line up with the rear site. The AR does not have a gas adjustment valve. The LMG and fixed MG have a three position gas adjustment valve in the gas block. The gas adjustment can be easily changed with the tip of a 5.56 round. The LMG and AR barrels have a carry handle with a ring to clip a sling onto. The fixed MG barrel does not have a carry handle or a place for sling attachment. The commando barrel is 15.7 inches in length and has the same outside dimensions as the LMG barrel. The outside of the barrel has two rows of six flutes to decrease weight. The commando barrel does not have a carry handle but has a mount for a sling to clip onto. The gas adjustment valve on a commando barrel has only two settings which differentiates it from the AR and LMG barrel gas adjustment valves. If a commando barrel has a 3 position gas valve it is most likely a LMG barrel that has been converted to resemble a commando barrel. NWM LMG barrels are the same as the Cadillac Gage barrels unless stamped with "200MM" (see above). |
