Mongo's Machine Gun Pages Stoner 63A Receiver
Weapons:

The heart of the Stoner 63 Weapon System is the receiver. The receiver is the basis for all the different configurations. The addition of a few assemblies the receiver can be configured in rifle, carbine, automatic rifle, fixed machine gun or LMG.

The receiver of the Stoner 63A is welded construction of sheet metal stampings and a few cast bulkheads. Attachment lugs are welded on the top and bottom of the receiver to facilitate attachment of the feed group, hand guard and trigger group. The receiver consist of a complex long rectangular "U" shaped stamped section with a flat stamped section plug welded to enclose the forward end of the receiver. The ejection port is located on the right side when it is configured as a rifle or carbine and the left side when configured as an automatic rifle or one of the belt fed configurations. The ejection port cover is spring loaded and is held shut by a spring loaded detent until the bolt carrier group pops it open (much like the M16). There after the cover remains open until it is manually closed again.

The bulkhead second from the rear contains the ejector. The ejector acts like a fixed ejector except that when the bolt carrier group is passing that point. The ejector is pressed in by the bolt carrier group thus retracting out of the way. The ejector spring will force the ejector back out during extraction to eject the spent cartridge. This bulkhead also serves as the mounting location for the bolt hold open mechanism for the rifle and carbine configurations. The bolt hold open mechanism is not present in all other configurations. The trunion serves as the rear mounting point for the quick change barrel. The trunion has a spring load pin that projects down into the barrel extension to retain it. The barrel's forward mounting point is the gas tube. The gas tube for the Stoner 63A is made of 17-4 PH stainless steel and is welded directly into the receiver body. The gas tube also serves as the mounting point for the bi pod. Mounted on the gas tube is a metal bracket that used used as a guide when inserting the barrel. This bracket also serves as the forward mounting point for the tripod adapter. The receiver has to pins welded to each side that serve as the rear mounting point for the tripod adapter. Some guns will not have these pins since the military wanted to keep all Stoners from being converted into belt fed configurations by field troops. The lack of these pins only keeps the gun from being used in the MMG and FMG roles though. The finish applied to Stoner 63As by Cadillac Gage was called Endurion©. Endurion© appear to be a baked on finish over phosphate. Its color is a black with a slightly brownish tint. Endurion© has exceptional wear and corrosion resistance but was banned due to it being a CFC.
