The Stoner 63A rifle is one of seven possible configurations built from the same receiver and parts sub assemblies. The basic receiver used for the machine gun is inverted in the rifle. The inversion of the receiver places the ejection port on the right side of the weapon (all MG configurations eject brass left). The trigger group is removed and mounted on the other side of the receiver and the rear sight is mounted on the machine gun trigger group mounting tabs. The inversion of the receiver also places the gas system above the barrel, which is ideal for a bottom magazine fed weapon. Items required to convert a machine gun to rifle configuration include:
The cocking handle for the rifle allowed the soldier the ability to use it as a forward assist. Pressing on the spring loaded inner stud caused a stud to protrude to catch the op rod. The cocking handle on the Stoner 63 series does not cycle with the action in any configuration. |

| There are several differences between the operation of the machine gun configuration and the rifle. The rifle fires from a closed bolt instead of the open bolt like the machine gun and automatic rifle "Bren". The rifle does not allow the user the ability to perform quick barrel changes like the machine gun. The rifle does lock open after the last shot from the magazine has been expended. The selector on the rifle works, giving the user the ability to switch between automatic and semiautomatic fire. The selector is on the machine gun but does not effect the function of it. | ||||
