A Dream Worth Remembering

I

Decimated by the earthquake and fire of 1906, San Francisco rose from the rubble, dusted off the ashes, and assumed the arduous task of reconstruction. Nine years later, not content with simply rebuilding itself, it had erected a “Fantasyland” at the edge of the bay filled with exotic pavilions, enormous domed palaces, fountains overflowing with figurative sculptures, and courtyards bursting with colorful flowers, exotic trees, and rare ornamental plants. Lengthy palm shaded promenades stretched in all directions, a “jewel” encrusted tower rose more than four hundred feet in the air, there were monumental arches laden with murals and crowned by colossal sculptural groups, hundreds of amusements, thousands of exhibits, over ten thousand works of art, and much more!

This “Dream City” was created to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal which had opened its locks to navigation in 1913. The canal was heralded as one of the greatest engineering accomplishment in history, and the U.S. government, with justifiable pride, decided that an International Exposition should be held to honor this achievement.
