Until the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake forced its closure and subsequent relocation, two murals which Frank Vincent du Mond painted for the walls of the Arch of the Setting Sun in the Court of the Universe, were on exhibit at the San Francisco Public Library. Pioneers Departing from the East hung in the west Reference Room, and Pioneers Arriving in the West in the south General Reading Room. When conversion of this building into the Asian Art Museum commenced in 1996, these murals were removed and placed in storage. These two murals were not part of the grant of 37 murals given to the War Memorial Board of Trustees by the Directors of the PPIE. Consequently, they remain the property of the Asian Art Museum Project which has evidenced no plans for their future.
