| Florence Lundborg, a local San Francisco artist and the only woman muralist with work at the PPIE, painted a mural variously titled, The Riches of California or The Season of Fruits which is currently stored in the basement of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center.
Childe Hassams Fruit and Flowers and Arthur M. Mathews Victorious Spirit are on long term loan to the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco in Golden Gate Park where they are in storage. Except for Brangwyns, Du Monds, and a few of Bancrofts murals, none of these paintings has been hung for public display for more than 86 years. Worse, none have been appraised and none have been insured against loss or damage. While many were listed as being in from good to very fine condition in a 1994 report from the Controllers Audit Division of the City and County of San Francisco restoration and rehanging costs have combined with a dirth of suitable exhibit locations and a lack of appreciation for the quality of these remarkable treasures to insure that none will be on display in the foreseeable future. Thanks to Deborah Lehane, Program Director for the San Francisco Arts Commission Civic Arts Collection, Carlene Leftwich of the Friends of Lincoln Theatre, Carole De Bell, Librarian and Archivist for the Veterans Home of California, and Elizabeth Glaze, Director of Public Relations, San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center for their valuable assistance while researching the mural decorations. |
