2011 Ford CVPI
2011 marks the final production year for the Ford Crown Victoria. Still equipped with the 4.6 litre V-8, the CVPI will be sorely missed by many in law enforcement.
Take a look at this story about the State Patrol's farewell to the Crown Victoria told only as KARE-11 TV's Boyd Huppert can on The Land of 10,000 Stories.
For 2012, the choices for police sedans made a drastic change. Although redesigned for 2011, the oldtimer of the police sedan offerings is now the Dodge Charger. The Charger is available with either a 292 hp V6 or 370 hp Hemi V8 engine and has restored some of the police vehicle glory that once belonged almost exclusively to Chrysler Corporation. New to the police fleet stables are the Chevrolet Caprice and the Ford Interceptor.
After a 16 year absence, Chevrolet has reintroduced the Caprice for police service only. Built in Australia by GM’s Holden, the Caprice is a roomy rear wheel drive sedan equipped with a 355 hp 6.0 liter V8 and 6-speed automatic transmission. The Caprice is available only with a floor-mounted shifter, which many agencies feel interferes with placement of radio and switching equipment.
Ford’s venerable Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is now out of production. In its place, comes the all new Ford Interceptor. The Interceptor comes standard with a 281 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 and all wheel drive. Front wheel drive is available as a credit option. Ford also offers its 365 hp twin turbocharged EcoBoost V6 at additional cost.
In addition to these sedans, the front wheel drive Chevrolet Impala remains available for police service. The Minnesota State Patrol purchased a handful of Impalas for 2012, mostly for administrative staff.
The Chevrolet Tahoe PPV had been the sole SUV having pursuit vehicle status since 2005. Now, in addition to the new Interceptor, Ford offers a pursuit rated Interceptor Utility. Based on the Explorer, the Interceptor Utility has been re-engineered to stand up to the rigors of patrol and pursuit duties, and to do it with the safety and comfort of police officers in mind.
So, what is the Minnesota State Patrol’s choice for 2012?.
The Minnesota State Patrol purchased about 100 Ford Interceptors; at least 25 of which are the all wheel drive version. Most, however, will be front wheel drive. All are equipped with the standard 281 hp V6. Four AWD Interceptor Utility vehicles have also been purchased for crash reconstructionist duties. Watch for them to begin hitting the road soon!
Below is the very first of the new Ford Interceptors to be fully outfitted for the MSP.
