The Islamic School of Stanford

Grade 5th Islamic Studies

 Course Objectives

As-salaam Alaikum Students and Parents,

Goal

To teach my students the dimensions and the beautiful meanings of our Islamic practices as well as to bring the characters of the Sahabah alive in their hearts.

I believe in high expectations and I look forward to help students achieve their fullest potential. I would appreciate your active involvement and your follow up with homework, handouts, and topics discussed in class.  Please support your kids,  help to be prepared for exams and, if under any circumstances you have a question, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Islamic Studies Curriculum for fifth grade is divided into three semesters:

(1) For the fall quarter, the class, Insha Allah, will cover Our Faith and Worship book.

Ibadat topics include: Salah, Sawm, Zakah, Hajj, Jihad, Shariah, and issues of Halal /Haram.

(2) For the winter quarter, we will, cover Al Khalafah Ar- Rashisdah book along with selected stories of the Khulafa and some of the Sahabah from Those Promised Paradise book. The history of the Rightly-Guided Successors covers Abu Bakr (r), Omar (r), Othman (r), and Ali (r).

(3)  For the spring quarter, the students will work on group project, mini-paper assignments, and other assignments. There will be class presentations on the topics studied in the previous semesters.

Classroom Policy

I would expect certain level of discipline among the students in order to keep the environment conducive to learning. If any student has become of a significant distraction to fellow classmates or me, I will ask him/her to leave the classroom and wait outside until we are done for the day; parents will be notified of this.

Parent Involvement

I believe in high expectations and I look forward to help students achieve their fullest potential. I would appreciate your active involvement and your follow up with homework, handouts, and topics discussed in class. Please don’t forget to sign their Homework sheet and Prayer monitor every Sunday.

If under any circumstances your child could not make it at the exam’s day please notify me or room parent in advance. Should you have any concerns, please schedule a conference with the room parent.

From my experience the more the parents are sincerely involved or concerned about the Islamic studies the more the kids eagerly achieved and responsibly learned, and vise versa. Educators emphasize, “Parents are not only the first and most important teacher of their children, they also have the greatest influence on their children’s attitudes toward school.”

Course requirement

Homework

Every Sunday, the students will receive a homework sheet that has 3-6 questions. You can expect this to take no more than 2-3 hours per week.  The homework sheet should be signed and returned the following Sunday. Students are required to read the chapters before coming to class.

The students received, at the first Sunday in school, the curriculum outline for the fall semester, which states the dates, the chapter to be covered and the assigned homework. Students will receive a separate curriculum outline for the winter semester.

Group Presentation

The class will be divided into groups: each group will work on different subjects from the curriculum. Students need to meet together before the presentation to plan and distribute tasks among them. The duration for presentation is approximately 20min. divided among the students in a group.

The students are required to do the following:

  1. Prepare and design a display board with focal brief points about the topic; draw, use pictures or maps.
  2. Do a skit; demonstrate or act a relevant scene.
  3. Everyone should be prepared to answer questions from classmates.
  4. Prepare 3-5 MC or T/F questions for classmates.

Prayer Monitor

This is designed to augment, motivate, and create a participative class experience for the students. The sheet will enable the student to track their daily prayers. They should bring it the following Sunday. Students who have submitted the most sheets will be presented with a gift at the end of each semester.
