You know, having recently gotten in a traffic accident myself (not from speeding, but hydroplaning) I have to say that if this light makes the road safer, I'm perfectly willing to take 90 seconds out of my day to help protect myself, my passengers, and those around me. I don't condemn your opinions as everyone is entitled to their own, but take a moment to realize that they put it there for a reason. I've waited through the light when no one was coming, but what people are forgetting is that cars can be dangerous things. My sister and I, if we hadn't been wearing our seatbelts, would have died in our wreck. It's not worth saving maybe the total 5 minutes you sit at this light in a week. You can drive as safely as you please, but accidents happen. This light can be a pain, but if it makes our roads and lives safer, I'm willing to put up with it. I know you're not talking about completely removing the light and I'm not opposed to a round-about either, but I have seen posts where people say they just run the light. For the safety of everyone in this area, please just wait and don't do it. You don't need to compromise what you can't put a price on.

Webmaster comments   Considering your recent accident, I can appreciate your current "safety first" frame of mind. However, you seem to have overlooked the fact that TDOT and Lakesite admit the design of this light was flawed from the beginning and it WILL be replaced. In its current form - it is not safer than it was before. In fact, I suspect the opposite.
Drive carefully out there.

Stormy Ridge
This light is such an annoyance. I'm sure BiLo appreciates the increased traffic through their parking lot. It's an anti-WinnDixie conspiracy I tell you.

I live in the neighborhood north and west of this light and you people who are in such a hurry that you cut through a subdivision like it's a speedway are too impatient. Change happens and so do delays. I got used to the light a lot easier than I did your speeding past my house at more than 20 mph over the speed limit. Slow down.
6 December 2004 - not far from this light

Webmaster comments   Fixing this light will probably solve your problems much easier than trying to slow down each car trying to avoid it. There is no need for the delay that is causing your new "speedway".

chris
why worrie about this red light when there are more important things in the world to worrie about.Like starving and homeless children and adults all over the world. What does it hurt to stop at a red light for a minute,it may save someones life one day.

Webmaster comments   And why worry about proper capitalization, punctuation, and spelling?

My parents live in High Ridge, and everytime I come home something is different about Hixson Pike. This light is extremely annoying and I am glad to see the community doing something about it. I HATE WAITING AT IT especially when I have already been in the car for 2 hours.

Great idea on the website! I frequently travel through this intersection and usually get caught at the light. I have tried several times to beat the left hand turn by going through the light and turning left behind Bilo. It has sometimes proven effective. I feel the light would have been more beneficial at Thrasher Pike.

Great site, informative, constructive way to get the rest of us involved in the common cause. The new road is wonderful, but speed limit too slow. The light affects me at least 4 times a day, northbound. I need to turn left, but instead, have been taking left at Nelson at top of the hill. This is much more dangerous for everyone. Sometimes I can muster up the patience and tolerance to get in that left lane and sit there and pray for my family, and sometimes, I just must move on. Ya know? Thanks for the chance to be part of this.

Forget the light, raise the speed limit. 45 is absolutely ridiculous. I can't drive 55.

Dang, what a waste of good hardware! This light should have been utilized at the Hixson Pk/Thrasher Pk intersection, where it is actually needed!

what's the big deal? everyone needs the extra time to stir another creamer in their coffee, make 4 or 5 phone calls, organize paperwork from work, admire the aging bi lo building. the ladies can spruce up their lip stick on the way home.....too bad they dont have one that stays red that long going the other way in the morning....you could make up your whole face on the way to work. I find it a good prayer time, i can normally pray for my whole family before it turns green.

I agree this light is needless. Somehow, people have been getting onto main thoroughfares from side streets (without a signal light to tell them when to do it) for years. There are other lights such as this one in Chatt-town. For example, the one at Hixson Pike just past Physician's Care northbound with left turn onto Dupont Pkwy. However, with so many people around who have the mentality of Thomas Paine (see his comment below), one can see why the more intelligent(though 'less mature') people of the world have to endure such idiocy. It is too bad that those of us who are able to think our own way through our days have to put up with irritants which compensate for those who are not.

I do not have to deal with this light too much, but I do understand. The light I do have to deal with is the one at Hixson Pk, and Big Ridge Rd. The light takes insanely forever to change for those drivers coming off the ridge. At first it was quick to change when no Hix. Pk. traffic was coming, now it has terrible timing, even when no traffic is coming from either way on Hix. Pk. They should fix that one too.

I live up the road from this light and would love to see it TAKEN OUT. I know you just want it fixed but of the hundreds of times I have driven through it there has never been a back up coming off of Dallas Hollow. Good luck in getting it fixed, I think it should be removed.

As for the speed trap, I have seen at least one officer every time I go that way. I suppose it is a matter of time before they write me a ticket but I figured that would be coming once the 4 lane was finished.

Nice site

I agree this is a speed trap! I forget sometimes that the police are here for more than just ticket writing. There has been a huge increase in cars being stolen/broken into in the Lakesite Subdivision area. Patrol the insides of our communities not just the Volunteer Video parking lot!

I drive through this light at least twice a day, and I find no inconvenience from it in the least. I think even if you find yourself irritated by a traffic light, you really need to rethink about what you hold important... this is far too trivial a matter to want to "fix" this light. I hear most people complaining about the left turn; so what's a few extra seconds out of your day to obey the law? Turning despite the law simply shows your immaturity (whoever you may be). If you honestly believe that this light is irksome, you're impatient; simple as that. You obviously don't realize that being held at a traffic light happens everywhere. It's true! Who'd have thought that you might get stopped at a traffic light for a longer period than you'd like? Well, whether you like it or not, it's the law, and until they fix it (which will probably take longer than you can imagine; they only told you they would to get you off their backs) you have to obey it. I don't mind it, neither should you. Be mature about it. By the way, good job making the local news, maybe more people than could fit in your car will care now. And just because your site got X number of hits, doesn't mean that many people cared. I'm one of them. Have a great day, and think of me next time you run that red light.

Instead of the intersection and traffic light,we should have a traffic circle at this intersection.Traffic circles save time and fuel in the long run, and we can all keep moving on at any time of the day or night. At times, I am driving home from work at very early hours of the morning, and have had to sit at the red light through the whole cycle. What a waste of time!
3 November 2004 - Lakesite

Webmaster comments   I strongly suggest you call the City of Lakesite and express your concern over the programming/timing issues. There is no reason I know of why it can't be set to blink yellow overnight.

Wayne
Can someone explain why you can drive 50 mph on a two-lane road but only 45 mph on a four-lane? I've seen two-lane roads worse than Hixson Pike where the speed limit was 55 mph. I'm not saying that speed will help, but why couldn't they at least have left it the same as it was before it became four lanes? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the new road, but these rocket scientists need to go back to the drawing board. We could have paved a road from here to Nashville in the time it took them to fix this 3- to 4-mile stretch of road.

If you have ever tried to turn left onto Hixson Pike from Dallas Hollow rd. after church on a Sunday morning you would know why there is light. I think it's a good idea and I haven't been inconveinced by it yet.

I drive by this light 2- 4 times a day. I live in Lakesite so i have to drive by the light on my way to school, home, anywhere. I am stopped all the time by the light going north or south only to watch one car turn left onto or off of hixson pike. I am amazed at the stupidity of the light everyday. The light should be taken down or changed as soon as possible

This intersection is not unique with this problem. I get perturbed on other 5 lane main thoroughfares where the left turn green arrow just shuts "off" after a "yellow" arrow, while the main traffic flow continues in the same direction. At this point, the first person at the now-shut-off left turn signal waits until another green arrow pops up even when the opposing traffic has cleared, allowing a left turn from the left turn lane. That's when I want to walk up to the waiting driver and ask where they learned to drive. This signal is at Gunbarrel's Hamilton Place entrance where traffic is heavy but not enough that there is not an opening to turn left.

Webmaster comments   Too many "lemmings" driving around mindlessly waiting for a light to tell them what to do... I feel your pain.

Although I'm in favor of the foghorn suggestion below, I agree that either no light or removal of the protected left is a good solution. It is seriously good to see a comunity rise up to change things for the better where they live instead of planners and engineers doing so for them 200 miles away. Living in the new TimberRidge sub, I've had to deal with this light almost daily - and will welcome the fix. Further, being a big summertime user of Chester Frost, I also agree some form of traffic control would be good there.

Oh Bless you, Its about time somebody gripped about this light, I was wondering why they put that there? I thought the best place for that light would be at Hixson Pike and Chester Frost Park, so all the campers, fisherman and just beach bums could get out. Now you talking a bad place to try to get out of with a 50 foot camper, Oh Geez...Well I live right on Hixson Pike and have all my life, and I have never seen such a waste of money in my life. We have lived here for more than 25 years and was elated when we found out that Hixson Pike was going to be 4-laned! We now have a beautiful and safe road to travel on in half the amount of time. We recall the many traffic accidents and the heavy traffic backups at rush hour time before. The "Hixson Pike Wildhairs" need to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery! Thanks for your fine efforts. I called TDOT several weeks ago concerning the subject light. I received a letter from TDOT and was surprised that it was written with a crayon. The writer explained that they were not allowed to have sharp objects in their office. They did say they would try to get the light fixed if we would petition State Reps to allow TDOT to at least have "Sharpie" markers to write with.

I really don't want to be too hard on TDOT since I once worked for our U.S. government and know some of the hoops poeple have to jump through in order to get anything accomplished. Once everyone feels they will not get hurt by making a decision to Fix This Light, it will get done.

The question was "How long is 'Soon'?"
How quickly we forget ... remember the many months we were told that the construction on 153 would be completed "soon"? Or the construction on the Olgiati Bridge would be completed "soon"? Or the construction on Hixson Pike would be completed "soon"? "Soon" is only a year or two, evidently. Be patient, it will happen. (just my 2/100ths of a dollar)

I'm so glad something is being done, right after this light was put up I wondered why it was that way. I live in Chimney Hill, glad to get the signal for turning off of Dallas Hollow, but hated seeing all those people sitting there waiting to turn left off Hixson Pike. Great job!!!

The light should be removed, or made to blink yellow all the time on Hixson Pike and blink red on Dallas Hollow (that may be cheaper than taking it down). The state will only waste money replacing it with a different style, it is not necessary to have a light at that intersection in the first place.

One day I was at the light and I waited so long that I fell asleep. I actually fell asleep and my car rolled into the car in front of me. I got out of the car and walked up to the window of the car in front of me and that person had been asleep too! We both agreed at that point that we had to do something about this light or the whole town is going to begin to take naps at this redlight. So I formed a group to raise money in support of installing an enormous fog horn right at the intersection that will blow every time the light turns green in order to wake drivers up who have fallen asleep. We think this is a great idea for this intersection and will most certainly fixthislight.com.

What really gets me is the intersection just down the road next to Win-Dixie, Golden Gallon, the bank, the pharmacy (i think that's what it is this week) and McDonalds. I would venture to say that that intersection has a lot more traffic and is more prone to accidents, yet will still allow unprotected turns.

I agree with everyone that most of the time, there isn't even a need for a light here, but I think it would be helpful during Sequoyah's Outages where at 7 in the morning, traffic will get backed up for miles with all of the Sequoyah employees trying to get to and from work and everybody trying to get their kids to Loftis, etc. We'll find this one out pretty soon.

Thanks for the site! I'm glad to hear that something is being done about this light!

I was so glad to see this on the news. I have been stuck at this light many times wondering what exactly TDOT was thinking when they put this light in. I have often ran the red light because there was no oncoming traffic and I do have better things to do than sit there waiting, indefinately. So again, thank you.

I was glad to hear about this website. I live in Dayton and we have a light (#4) that works the same way. I do not know how many times I have been tempted to run it when there is no traffic to be seen yet the left turn has a red light. There is a another light a block away where you can turn left after the arrow is red. I guess people would say to go to that light but it is closer for me to turn at light 4. I think seeing this website has encouraged me to go to the city and find out what reasoning they have for this traffic light to be set up this way. Thank you for giving me the incentive to do something.

I saw this site featured on TV3 tonight and think it is a great idea. I live in Ringgold, GA and hope we can get a group of residents to get something done about the traffic here. If anyone has driven Alabama Hwy anytime during morning and afternoon school hours knows what I am talking about. There are 6 red lights in a mile stretch. The lights are so out of sync that only 3-5 cars can enter the hwy from Poplar Springs Rd. It takes me 35mins to drive from Ringgold Elementary to Ringgold Middle School in the mornings, any other time of the day it takes less than 10 minutes. I think the Catoosa Zoning Commission is to blame, seeing as how one of the commissioners owns the land where the new light went up. Everyone needs to let their voice be heard and stop all of the nonsense that is going on not only here in Catoosa Co. but in the surrounding areas as well. It all comes down to who owns what and who knows who. We can vote these money hungry jerks out of office and get the mess straightened up. I bet they don't have to drive thru these headache makers on a daily basis!!!!!!

Tennessee Department of Transportation

Dear Mr. Bragg:

Thank you for your TDOT Comment regarding the signal on Hixson Pike at Dallas Hollow Road in the Lakesite community. The website address you emailed is a very interesting site and well put together. I spoke to Mr. Ken Flynn, Assistant Regional Construction Manager, who is over this project. At the present time we have received a revision allowing us to change this signal to a "five-head section" (dated 8/24/04) and are negotiating this work along with other additional signal work not realized until after the signal and project was completed. These negotiations are nearing completion and the contractor should be put to work shortly. Thank you for your patience.

I did include the letters in MS Word that you can edit. The form letters are just a suggestion - and I'd encourage everyone to be creative and write their own. Thanks for the comments!

You caught my attention yesterday as you were placing the fixthislight.com banner up at the problem intersection. Being a resident that has to contend with this intersection several times a day I've often wondered which one of the many mindless bureacratic morons set this turning pattern up. Kudos for an excellent site to encourage people to vent their frustrations and possibly make a difference with problems in their community. Thank you for this site. Every time I sit and watch the 'open' road ahead of this light, I wander who I can call and complain to. Thank you for the information so that I can help get this ridiculous traffic light situation corrected. If it doesn't get corrected soon, the Police Dept will just have to let us assume this light is green when it should be.

I also agree with the section on the 45 mph speed limit on a new four lane road that used to be 50 mph as a two lane. Sounds like a 'speed trap' to me.

Who are these people and where did they leave their common sense???
