From the comments page:
Please know that several members of my staff have been in contact with the City of Lakesite and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (who have control over this light) to correct the problem. - County Commissioner & Chairman, Fred Skillern
We have been talking with TDOT about the problem since July. David Edwards, City Manager Lakesite, TN
The website address [fixthislight.com] is a very interesting site and well put together. - TDOT
I have been a police officer for more than 18 years, and this traffic light is the most stupid thing I have ever had to deal with. - Jimmy C.

I called TDOT several weeks ago concerning the subject light. I received a letter from TDOT and was surprised that it was written with a crayon. The writer explained that they were not allowed to have sharp objects in their office. - Tony D.
I formed a group to raise money in support of installing an enormous fog horn right at the intersection that will blow every time the light turns green in order to wake drivers up who have fallen asleep. - Tom G.
Just do what I do turn on red no matter what. And, if your in line just go around them and turn anyway. - "Hixson Guy"
Kudos to the webmaster for a well organized, very informative site. I wish you well on your crusade. - Nate S.
Oh Bless you, Its about time somebody gripped about this light... - Michelle

The problem with this light: This intersection previously had no traffic lights, has a low traffic count, low accident rate, and good sight distance. It is now a source of frustration for the majority of drivers (north and southbound Hixson Pike). Traffic turning left onto Dallas Hollow Road may only do so ONLY during a green arrow (protected-only). Legally, drivers must then wait through an entire light cycle even though there are safe gaps between southbound traffic - or even no oncoming traffic at all.

|
|
Your tax dollars at work - The Tennessee Department of Transportation designed and installed a traffic signal system that:
- Has created delays and driver frustration
- Increased fuel consumption
- Caused lost travel time to drivers
- Created a situation that may actually increase accidents
Southbound Hixson Pike once flowed freely. Traffic is now stopped constantly by frequent light cycles for the “protected only” northbound traffic waiting to turn left onto Dallas Hollow Road.

|
|
The Solution:
Replace the turn signal with a “5-head section” that allows traffic turning left onto Dallas Hollow Road to do so during gaps in opposing traffic.
Southbound traffic stops would be also greatly reduced.
OR, eliminate the cycling of this light except for the infrequent traffic wanting to turn northbound Hixson Pike from eastbound Dallas Hollow Road - which would trigger a light cycle. Northbound Hixson Pike traffic wanting to turn left onto Dallas Hollow Road would simply wait for plentiful gaps in traffic - just as drivers have done here for years.

What can you do to help: I’ve communicated with local, county, and state officials. While most agree there is a problem - and know how to fix it, it seems bureaucracy has indefinitely delayed installing a solution. As a tax paying citizen - I urge you to communicate with elected and appointed officials listed on the link at the left of this page. Phone numbers and preformatted letters are ready for your action.
Be a squeaky wheel.
I’ve listed the main offices I know of that are involved in this process. If you know of others please contact them too.
