3. During the battle of Antietam in the Civil War he was in charge of the food supplies for his brigade. His commanding officer reported, "From his hands every man in the regiment was served with hot coffee and warm meats, a thing that had never occurred under similar circumstances in any other army in the world. ... " William McKinley. [BCD 97] The commanding officer was Rutherford B. Hayes, later also to become President.

4. He became famous for leading a victorious charge up Kettle Hill. Theodore Roosevelt on July 1, 1898 in Cuba during the Spanish-American war. The hill has popularly been called "San Juan Hill". He refers to the hill as "Kettle Hill" in his book The Rough Riders, published in 1899. The book is online at http://www.bartleby.com/51/. In the 1997 edition of The Rough Riders with additional pictures and text by Richard Bak, it mentions the "San Juan Heights" overlooking the city of Santiago. Apparently Kettle Hill was part of the San Juan Heights.

6. He was given up for lost after the boat he commanded was sliced through by an enemy ship. John F. Kennedy, August 2, 1943 west of New Georgia island. The survivors swam from island to island until they found a native who could be sent for help. [AP 305]

7. He was a pilot who was shot down by the enemy. George Bush. In World War II, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross after being shot down in his Grumman Avenger during a bombing raid on the island of Chichi Jima. He stayed afloat on a life raft until picked up by a submarine. [AP 435]

8. During World War II, he served as an operations officer for a navy air transport unit. Richard Nixon. He rose to the rank of lieutenant commander by the end of the war. [AP 331]
