Identify the following presidents.

1. He was the only future or ex-president to turn down a Supreme Court nomination. John Quincy Adams. He was nominated by Madison in 1811. [BPL 188]

2. He was the only full term president who did not appoint anyone to the Supreme Court.  Jimmy Carter. [BPL 189]

3. He proposed a law allowing the president to appoint a new member of the Supreme Court whenever a sitting justice reached the age of  70. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937.  This was his attempt to "pack" the Supreme Court, that is, to get more justices on his side appointed.  The idea was rejected by congress. [TBSC 471]

4. He appointed Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jew to serve on the Supreme Court.  Woodrow Wilson [PS 150]

5. He appointed Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American, to serve on the Supreme Court. Lyndon Johnson. [EPT 3-4]
