Arleigh Burke Guided Missile-Destroyer Specifications

Facts about the Arleigh Burke Guided Missile Destroyer

Destroyers are fast warships that help keep larger ships safe, or are used for protection in large battle groups.

Destroyers and Guided Missile Cruisers operate in support of a carrier group, surface action groups, amphibious groups, and replenishment groups. The Arleigh Burke Destroyers can be used for many tasks, for example in Operation Desert Storm Destroyers were used to fire Tomahawk Cruise Missles at land based targets, and gave carrier groups air-support, anti-surface support, and anti-subamarine support. They carry many Vertial Launch Systems (VSL's) which carry Tomahawk Cruise Missles, and Harpoon anti-ship missles, as well as standard missles.

To technological advances have improved the destroyers by far, which has built up to the most superior class of destroyer today the Arleigh Burke.

The Arleigh Burke (DDG-51), was named for the Navy's most famous destroyer squadron combat comander and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the Arleigh Burke was commisioned July 4, 1991 and was the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea since the Iowa Class Battleships. Like the Ticonderoga Class Cruisers, DDG-51's combat systems center around the Aegis combat system, and the SPY-ID, multi function phased array radar. The combination of the Aegis, the VLS system ( vertical launch system), an advanced anti- submarine warfare system, advanced anti-aircraft missles and Tomahawk ASM/LAM, which continues to make the Arleigh Burke Class revolutionize destroyers.
