- Use an Anti-Virus program. Both Norton Anti-Virus
and McAfee work well.
- Make sure you have all the security patches for your O/S and browser, and make sure the security setting
is Medium-High or higher.
- Get a firewall program. Zone Alarm and
BlackICE both work well. Windows XP has
a built-in firewall, if you turn it on (in the network properties). Also, get an external router with a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall. Both Netgear and Linksys make good ones.
- Remove Ad-based spyware. Get Ad-aware (get the free personal version), Spybot Search and Destroy (also free), and Spy Sweeper, and remove them all!
