Steel Challenge Match Page

In 2005, I started shooting "Steel Challenge" matches at the Atlanta Conservation Club in central IN. Per the ACC web site, "The format of the matches follows that of the Steel Challenge Shooters Association (SCSA). Each match will have four stages, (one stage fills a shooting bay). Each stage has five steel targets, which are engaged in various sequences, but the STOP plate always ends the string. Each string starts with a buzzer from an electronic timer, and ends when you HIT the stop plate. You will usually shoot 5 strings; we drop the string with the worst time, and the total of the best four are your score for that stage. Your total for the four stages equals your match score. Fastest time wins!"

In 2007, I switched over to the Friday Night Steel matches at the Marion County Fish & Game Association, due of the range's proximity to my house, and because it was easier for me to swing by and shoot a match on a Friday evening after work than it was to make time on a Saturday to drive to Atlanta CC. The FNS matches are not sanctioned by the SCSA, so the setup and rules are a bit more relaxed. Matches generally consist of five stages with 4 to 6 targets each (there may or may not be start/stop plates), with the competitor shooting three strings per stage. Scoring consists of total time plus time added for any penalties. Many of the regular FNS shooters are members of the Indiana Gun Owners Forum (INGO), and we have a great time hanging out, BS'ing and shooting on the second Friday of every month.

In steel matches, shooters can compete in one of several different equipment-based divisions, including Open, Limited, Production, Revolver, Rimfire, Shotgun, and (pistol caliber) Carbine. I normally shoot in Production Division using either my G34 or G17, and in Carbine using my 9mm SBR.
