Thunder Rods/Guidas of Middlefield Cruise, 5/21/2010 - Greg Mattesen photoWhat a pleasant surprise when our old car friend Greg was able to cruise over to one of the first Thunder Rods' "Guida's" Cruise Nights of the 2010 season, with his kool '54 Ford Pickup Truck, on a beautiful Middlefield evening...

From Greg’s e-mail dated 5/22/2010:

“…I was able to get there by about 7:15… The parking lot was quite full when I arrived.

I had to park near the rear of the building, but there were some other nice cars nearby, including the nice Triumph TR3 parked next to me…

One of the women who helped me park told me that they had the most cars ever at this cruise. I would guess there were about 40 cars or so…

I had a good time checking out the various vehicles. The Triumph TR6 and the TR3 were the only foreign cars I noticed (no VWs!). There were several other trucks, including a nice mid '40s Chevy, a couple of mid-'50s Chevys, and a '55 or so Chevy panel truck. The Dodge truck pictured was pretty impressive from an engineering standpoint: it appeared to be mid-engined.

There were some really neat cars there, too, including a mostly original '66 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible in really good shape, a super nice early Maverick in yellow, and various '50s cars that lent a nostalgic feel to the scene at the vintage drive-in restaurant…

The Thunder Rods held the 50/50 raffle at around 7:45, and I left shortly thereafter. As I was leaving a guy called over to me, 'nice ride, bro!' which was cool. It was a fun way to spend an hour or so on a Friday evening, and the ride home was fun cruising along the reservoirs on Route 66 and making my way through the Friday night hustle and bustle in Middletown. And the hot dog was fantastic!...”

IMAGE BELOW: Another overall type view, this time from further east, but still looking back toward the famous Guida's neon sign, which is approximately top center of this image, and a bit of the blue-color Guida's restaurant building is at the right edge of this image. This shot gives a bit more perspective for the superb turnout of old cars, hot rods, you-name-it, that filled the Guida's parking lot that evening. Image by Greg Mattesen.

It appears this shot was taken around the back of the restaurant building, demonstrating again the tremendous turnout of old cars and trucks, and alsothe efforts made by the organizers to do their best to make sure everyone has a place to park their classic vehlcle. IMAGE BELOW: "Who's next" to challenge this radical hot rod Dodge pickup truck?! This kool nostalgia vehicle recalls some of the famous wheelstander drag vehicles of the past. Lettering on the side of the vehicle reads "Let's Rock!" Image by Greg Mattesen.
