CAR EVENTS
CRUISE NIGHTS (& Other Recurring Car Gatherings)
*We are now starting (as of 10/24/2012) the process of building up our 2013 event listings... The new "2013's" are highlighted in red! As always, we welcome you to please send us your CT Shoreline-area old car event listings! *As of 2/28/2013, we are eliminating the 2012 car event listings (goodness knows the 2013's are starting to take up substantial space even this early in the year!), but we'll let the old cruise night listings stay for now, since we haven't seen many 2013 Shoreline-area cruise nights announced so far as of yet (which also reminds me to remind you that we welcome your letting us know about yours!)....
This Calendar is originated and periodically updated by the Shoreline Antique Auto Connection, a not-for-profit enterprise run for antique auto enthusiasts, by antique auto enthusiasts. JANUARY 27, 2013, Sunday, Essex Essex Ed Parade, 2pm, in the Village of Essex, CT. Quoting from a listing we found online at the Essex Board of Trade web site, http://www.essexct.com/events.php : " Essex Ed, a larger-than-life ground hog, will make his annual pilgrimage from Essex Boat Works on Ferry Street up to the top of Main Street leading a parade of antique cars, fire trucks, residents, and visitors. All are invited to join in and encouraged to bring their own noisemakers and ground hog gear to celebrate the day. Each year, Essex Ed is dressed in unique attire to acknowledge a special occasion or person. Past years have seen Ed dressed as historical figures, athletes, thespians, and musical performers. As always, this year's costume is a secret but organizers guarantee that it will be a huge hit when Ed makes his appearance webmasters note The underlining under the words antique cars and visitors in the quoted section above were not part of the original as-published event listing, but I decided to underline them anyway, just in case you may not be an Essex resident, but might still want to try to see if you can participate with your antique car. Ive seen photos of past years Essex Ed Parades, and have seen what appears to be a pretty healthy turnout of old cars participatingmany of them being open old cars as well, which is impressive, considering this event is held outdoors in January! Not sure who to try contacting for permission to attend, but I would guess that the Essex Board of Trade might be a good first place, reference: http://www.essexct.com/contact.php . Additional info Heres an online report I found about last years Essex Ed Parade, published by Shoreline Times: http://www.shorelinetimes.com/articles/2012/01/26/news/doc4f21830237496745436981.txt . Good luck and please let us know if you manage to participate, or even if you just go to spectateit sounds like a lot of fun! *IMPORTANT UPDATES as of 1/10/2013: Subsequent to my putting this event listing together a couple of days ago, we received a very nice note from Essex Board of Trade President, Jim DAlessio (jaldenclothiers@aol.com), and I am pleased to add Mr. DAlessios gracious and helpful note herequoting from his e-mail dated 1/9/2012: Dear Steve - Thank you for your interest in the Essex Ed Groundhog Day Parade. The parade this year will be Sunday, January 27th at 2pm. Should you or any of your members be interested in having a vehicle in the parade, we just ask that you be at the Essex Boatworks (Ferry Street, in the village) by 1pm. Thanks - Jim D'Alessio, President, Essex Board of Trade Sounds greatthanks Jim! How nice of the Essex Ed Parade organizers to extend this welcome! If I can do it, I would love to participate with an old car, but I also would love to hear back from anyone else who may have been able to participate with an old car, and perhaps we can work up a newsletter feature to document this most wonderful & fun tradition in the Town of Essex! And don't forget to be at the assembly spot by 1pm! Sincere thanks once again to Mr. DAlessio, the Essex Board of Trade, and everyone involved with the Essex Ed Groundhog Parade! MARCH 9, 2013, Saturday, Branford Benefit Dinner for Third Annual Connecticut Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, at WoodWinds in Branford. Quoting from the article that appears on page 2 of the February 7, 2013 issue of the Branford-focused newspaper The Sound (Branford, North Branford, and Northfords Hometown Newspaper, ref: www.zip06.com), in which the organizer of this event, Ted Aub, was honored as the newspapers Person Of The Week: (words and photo credited to Pam Johnson of The Sound): Ted Aub: Planning a Tribute to Vietnam Veterans Join Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Dinner, March 9... Two POW/MIA bracelets haven't left Ted Aub's wrist since 1966, and two more on his other wrist have been there since the 1970s. Although the New Haven native's number came up in the national draft in 1966, a draft overage canceled his call to serve. But as the son of a WWII veteran who worked as a German translator among POWs, forgotten and imprisoned soldiers have held a prominent place in Ted's life. Three years ago, it became his official role, when Ted was named Connecticut State Coordinator of the National League of POW/MIA Families To this day, 1,655 Vietnam veterans are still unaccounted for, with 26 MIA from Connecticut, Ted notes. On Saturday, March 9, Ted and the Connecticut Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day (CT-WHVVD) committee invite the public to a special dinner at WoodWinds in Branford. Proceeds will help underwrite the third annual Connecticut Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, a free event for all veterans and their families at the Guilford Fairgrounds in April The annual celebration spun off from a 2010 proclamation by then-governor M. Jodi Rell making March 30 Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. Congress passed a national act recognizing the day in 2007. Vietnam veterans were finally acknowledged after 45 years, says Ted, adding of the 1960s, It was a different era back then, with some pretty big anti-war movements. I had friends who came home and were told not to wear their uniform on the streets. Imagine having people take their anger out on the people who put on a uniform and have dutifully served this country. The annual CT-WHVVD celebration has received great response from veterans who've attended past events in Cheshire and Shelton. Ted, who lives in Madison, feels Guilford Fairgrounds is another perfect venue Living out here, I knew about the fairgrounds, and in the state, the Guilford Fairgrounds is a well-known thing. It's a great location because the event has food booths, craft booths, speakers, a live band, and a classic car show. The event is free to all veterans and their families, he adds. To this day, Ted says, Vietnam veterans are still working through their lousy welcome home after the conflict ended With CT-WHVVD, We're welcoming and honoring those who've served primarily in Vietnam, but also anyone who's served. Ted found out about CT-WHVVD due to his passion for classic cars. The Madison resident has owned AA Auto Parts in Branford since 1973 and is a classic car buff. He inquired about a car show planned for the first CT-WHVVD event in Cheshire. I called about the car show and they said, Why don't you come down to a meeting? says Ted The committee couldn't have a found a more enthusiastic member. Among his many affiliations, Ted organizes Connecticut's POW/MIA Recognition Day, is on the State Veterans Task Force, is an associate member of the Housatonic Marine League, an adjutant of the Marine Corps League Department of Connecticut, assists Vet Hunters Project (helping homeless veterans), and volunteers with Connecticut VA hospitals, including amputee support services. He's also involved with the Connecticut Iwo Jima Memorial and Branford's Take A Vet Fishing Program It's all intertwined, all interconnected, as far as I'm concerned, says Ted, who is also a husband, father, and grandfather Ted has big plans for the March 9 dinner. In addition to an exquisite meal, the night features speakers, guest/celebrity appearances, and entertainment, including WHVVD-CT Chairman MSG Steve Kreider, Soldier Hard (a music group), Vet Hunters, Miss Connecticut 2012 Emily Audibert, and Miss Connecticut 2006 Heidi Voight Ted will display artwork by VA art therapy participants and the sketches and drawings of Branford native Carl Holmstrom (1918-1979), done during his time as a World War II POW. Ted will read a proclamation from Jodi Rell acknowledging the celebration and plans to follow protocol to set up a Missing Man Honors Table. It's a tribute to those who never came home, says Ted of the empty table set for one, with a white cloth, inverted glass, lit candle, red rose in a vase tied with a yellow ribbon, a Bible, and other symbolic tributes. Ted invites any community members who want to show their support and appreciation to veterans to attend the March 9 dinner. Who wouldn't want to support the people in our country that are part of our Armed Forces? They write a check for their lives to protect our way of life. We need to acknowledge the sacrifice they made The Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Benefit Dinner is Saturday, March 9 at WoodWinds, 29 School Ground Road, Branford, from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $55; proceeds support CT-WHVVD Celebration at Guilford Fairgrounds on April 21. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.ctwhvvd.com webmasters note Bravo local automotive specialist and antique car enthusiast Mr. Aub for organizing this event! The complete article quoted above is also viewable, with a nice accompanying photo of Ted, online at: http://www.theday.com/article/20130206/NWS10/302079877/1065/rss14 (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/7/2013)

APRIL 20-21, 2013, Saturday-Sunday, Seekonk (MASSACHUSETTS) New England Dust Off, at Seekonk Speedway, Seekonk, MA. webmasters note This is an all-Volkswagen enthusiast gathering, seems to be for modern VWs (that is: water cooled & probably primarily those that are hot-rodded as well) for the most part, and I readily admit that I have never attended it. But what the heck, its a very early-season car thing to check out in the Southern New England area (and I believe has a swap meet as part of it), so no harm adding it to this list for everyones information. More info: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5927068-New-England-Dustoff-is-April-21st-2013!!!!!!! and http://nedustoff.com/ (doesn't look to be updated for 2013 yet). Additional info The street address for Seekonk Speedway is listed as: 1710 Fall River Ave., Seekonk, MA 02771. Heres the main web site for Seekonk Speedway: http://seekonkspeedway.com/ - and heres their web sites Directions page: http://seekonkspeedway.com/fan-guide/directions (this event was added to this calendar as of 1/24/2013; the event heading was revised to a two-day listing based upon a recent scan of the dedicated event web site, as of 4/4/2013)
APRIL 21, 2013, Sunday, Guilford Connecticut Welcome Home Vietnam Vets Event, at the Guilford Fairgrounds, 111 Lovers Lane, Guilford, CT 06437. webmasters note I was browsing the Guilford Fair web sites Other Events at the Fairgrounds 2013 page - http://guilfordfair.org/about-the-fairgrounds/other-events-at-the-fairgrounds/ - and found this event listed for April 2, with a rain date of April 28th. Thinking it possibly a little odd that the event would be scheduled for a Tuesday (April 2nd, 2013 is indeed a Tuesday, while April 28th, 2013 is a Sunday), I contacted our local old car buddy Bill Raccio, who is an official member of the Committee that organizes and runs this event. Bill advised that the 2 was a typo, and that it should have read 21. That makes a lot more sense, since April 21st is a Sunday, and the rain date of the 28th is the following Sunday. Thanks for clearing that up, Bill! Beyond this, I dont have any other details to report at this time, but Bill has assured me that we are on the mailing list for the Official Announcement, whenever that becomes available. And of course beyond the fantastic idea of giving special thanks and recognition to our countrys Vietnam War Veterans, the other reason why the event appears in this calendar is because it has, in the past, incorporated a car and motorcycle show as a highlight of the overall event (and we are, ah, guessing that this may return for the 2013 version as well ). I have not tried looking at the official event web site yet, but heres the URL, so you can check it out at your leisure: www.ctwhvvd.com . And dont forget to watch this space also, as well be passing along Bills press releases *1/21/2013 UPDATE I happened to be browsing OldRide.com and found this brief listing posted there under Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day CT 2013: The event takes place at the Guilford Fair Grounds, Lovers Lane Starts at 10am and goes to 3pm Music, games, vendors, raffles, antique fire trucks and police cars, street rods, customs, all welcome, $10.00 per show car Goody bags ,dash plaques to first 150 cars, other surprises, come out to support the vets - these words were transcribed directly from: http://www.oldride.com/events/8264660.html - very cool! *1/29/2013 UPDATE - Quoting from our buddy Bill Raccios direct e-mail dated 1/29/2013: Here ya go Steve April 21st, 2013, Guilford Fair Grounds, Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day CT 2013, time: 10am to 3pm, $10.00 per show car, goody bags, dash plaques, food, music, raffles, vendors A community event, welcome to all vets, all kinds of cars, antique fire trucks and police cars Free general admission and free parking, donations inside event, kids area, face painting Come out to support the Vets!!!... MAY 11-12, 2013, Saturday-Sunday, Brooklyn 2nd Annual Eastern Regional Carnival for a Cure, at Brooklyn Fairgrounds, Brooklyn, CT. webmasters note - I had originally read about this event from the Belltown Antique Car Clubs newsletter, February 2013 edition, where it was noted that the event was looking for antique cars to be on display as part of the overall event designed to raise money for American Cancer Society; it was also noted that the event coordinator was Craig Roberge (860-564-3600), and the event had its own dedicated web site at: www.carnivalforacure.org. Upon seeing that notice, I sent a snail mail in early February directly to Mr. Roberge asking for possibly any more details about the antique auto participation aspects of the event, that I could possibly put on the SAAC Calendar; he got back to me promptly with a helpful response. Quoting from event organizer Craig Roberges (ctbigdog72@yahoo.com) e-mail of 2/7/2012: Hi Steve, Our Relay for Life team, The Zoo Crew, is hosting a fundraiser on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 10th, 11th, and 12th, 2013, at the Brooklyn fairgrounds, Brooklyn, CT, which is located approximately 25 miles north of the Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun Casinos. We will be hosting the 2nd Eastern Regional Carnival for a Cure. This event will feature the King of the Grill back yard BBQ cook off, local businesses, a full scale carnival complete with rides, games, food, crafters, vendors, live bands, and entertainers from throughout the region. We have opened this event up to every nonprofit and American Cancer Society Relay for life chapter within Southern New England . We are hoping to find a car cruise organization, who may be interested in joining our event as an added attraction to help us raise the much needed funds and awareness to help battle this horrible disease. If your schedule will allow we would be very excited to have you at our event. Our non-profit tax number is available upon request Thank you for your time and consideration. Please respond via email to ctbigdog72@yahoo.com or by phone at 860-564-3600. We all hope you will join us in working toward our goal of a cancer-free future Please let me know If you have any specific questions Thank you, Craig Roberge, Event Coordinator At that point, I sent a note back and advised that SAAC was not a car cruise organization (nor an organization of any sort), but rather a not-for-profit news & information resource related to the local old car hobby world, and asked if it would be appropriate to add the event to the SAAC Calendar. Mr. Roberge responded with these additional comments, via an e-mail dated 2/21/2013: Hello Steve, Thank you for getting back to me. I would very much like to have our event posted in the SAAC publications. I hope that one of the auto clubs steps forward and will use this venue as a dust off. It is a great cause and a fun event. I will offer free admission to the driver of any clean classic car or truck that is joining us as part of a cruise, under the condition that the car is to be on display for all enthusiasts to admire (webmasters note that underlining of the sentence specifically pertaining to antique auto participation was done by me, for emphasis) Thank you, Craig Roberge, Event Coordinator Sounds good to me, Craig, and thank you for taking the extra time to clarify for us! Any readers who might be interested in participating in the event with your antique car or truck should probably call or e-mail Mr. Roberge directly just to make sure have all the information you needhis contact info appears in the above section. We tip our hat to Mr. Roberge, his Zoo Crew fellow volunteers, and everyone involved with this wonderful cause! MAY 27, 2013, Monday, Branford - Town of Branford Memorial Day Parade. We are extremely happy to report that antique automobile participation has once again been solicited for the 2013 Branford Memorial Day Parade, which will be happening on Monday, May 27th. We received an e-mail dated 3/4/2013 from Branford Veterans Parade Committee Chairman Frank Whelan, and are very pleased to relay his invitation for antique autos to participate. Quoting from Chairman Whelans e-mail: Hi Steve: The Memorial Day Parade will be at 10am on 27 May 2013. We look forward to seeing you at the Parade which will be held on the Town Green in front of Town Hall For now I will take the liberty of filling in more details, based on my having been fortunate to participate in several past years-worth of Branford Memorial Day Parades with an antique autoincluding last year (2012), when we had a new assembly location for the antique autos, as directed by Chairman Whelan (and I am going to double-check with the Chairman again to make sure that he wants us to assemble in the same spot for the 2013 version). Chairman Whelan states that the Parade is at 10am, and I would definitely advise your getting there even earlier with your antique car, since the police by that time are already restricting regular traffic flow in the area, and there are floods of spectators, etc., everywhere around the Green at that time. From what I recall in past years, at 10am there are ceremonies honoring those soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country prior to the start of the parade. Following those observances, the various groups (including veterans, scouts, fife & drum corps, other civic organizations, and then eventually the antique cars, and I think the town firetrucks usually bring up the rear) gradually flow out onto Main Street, from the Green, and then head west on Main Street to start the Parade. In 2012, Chairman Whelan directed antique autos (those not affiliated with any specific civic group that is, since there are a couple of organizations in town who have members with antique cars, and they are used as part of the groups participation in the parade; for the purposes of this listing on the SAAC Calendar, however, we antique auto drivers are presumed to be unaffiliated independents) to assemble at the intersection of Montowese Street, and Main Streetactually along the edge of Montowese, with noses facing toward Main Street, so that we can flow out onto Main as soon as we are directed (It goes without saying that I will revise these instructions ASAP if I hear anything different from Chairman Whelan as far as what hed like for the 2013 antique auto pre-parade assembly/staging spot). Another thing I will add for now, and revise if needed following Chairman Whelans review of this event listing, is that I believe in the event of rain, that the Parade is cancelled, and Branfords Memorial Day Observances get held indoors (either at the Armory or the High School); so, if it is raining, I would advise dont bother coming out with your antique cars. Luckily Branfords Memorial Day Parade has been very fortunate to have had fine weather for as long as I can rememberbut it never hurts to think ahead about what to do in case it is raining that day Additional thoughts - We love driving our old cars in the Branford Memorial Day (& Veterans Day) Parades, as a way to remember, honor, and show respect & gratitude to our country's soldiers who have given so much for our freedom--and we sincerely thank the Branford Veterans Parade Committee for once again inviting antique cars to participate. Please stay tuned to this space for any additional info/instructions/directions that we may receive from Branford Veterans Parade Committee Chairman Whelan. We sincerely thank the Chairman and the entire Parade Committee for the gracious invitation for antique autos once again to participate in this wonderful town event honoring our countrys soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Finally, please be sure to check out our full online report about antique auto participation in the 2009 version of this event, at: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/BFDMEM09/OldCarsReport.html *5/8/2013 UPDATES Here are some additional updates that we received from Chairman Whelan, excerpted from his snail mail postmarked May 5, 2013: The Branford Veterans Parade Committee is pleased to announce the selection of Branford resident and United States Air Force Veteran Lt. Col. Peter Brainerd as Parade Marshall for its Monday, 27 May 2013 main annual Memorial Day Parade, with services starting at 10am on the Town Green, with parade step-off shortly thereafter. The Lt. Col. joined the Air Force in 1954 and received his basic training at Samson AFB, and upon graduation was assigned to OHara AFT Air Defense Command Unit. In 1963, as SSGT, he received a direct commission to 1st Lt. via President J.F. Kennedys Outstanding Enlisted Promotion Program. Since then until retirement in 1992 he was assigned to AFBs at Dow Field, Otis, Denver, Kirtland, Hanscomb, in jobs consisting of vehicle maintenance, supply and logistics, disaster preparedness, chemical, nuclear and biological warfare. U.S. Army Captain Vincent Giordano will be the master of ceremonies. Invocation and benediction will be presented by Reverend Bill Keane, Senior Minister, of the First Baptist Church of Branford, with additional readings provided by Chaplain Emeritus Grant Briggs of the American Legion Post #83. Many bands and fife and drum units will participate along with scout units, floats, cars, fire department units, and police units. New this year will be the recently formed St. Mary School Fife and Drum Corps unit. In the event of rain, ceremonies will be held at Branford High School at 10am. All military veterans who would like to march are asked to fall-in with the American Legion/VFW units. Sergeant Major Brian Miniter, U.S. Army, will be the unit marching aid to Lt. Col. Brainerd . See you all at the Parade!... Frank Whelan, Chairman Sounds fantastic, Chairman Whelan and thank you so much for passing along all those detailed updates. We certainly wish to congratulate local old car guy of note Peter Brainerd for the great honor of being this years Branford Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshall! JUNE 15, 2013, Saturday, Haddam-East Haddam Swing Bridge Centennial Celebration, quoting from a broadcast e-mail dated 1/24/2013, from Haddam Town Planner Liz Glidden (townplanner@haddam.org), which was forwarded along to us the same day, by our local Haddam-based old car friend Jack Tary: The Swing Bridge turns 100 this summer and the Haddams are planning a parade and event to mark the occasion. A Committee has been established to organize and promote a small parade on June 15, 2013 at 9am to cross the bridge followed by a ceremonial opening of the bridge. Since the bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic during this time, the bridge-closing events are scheduled to be a total of 15 minutes. The Governor and several elected officials have been invited to participate Parking for the parade will be in East Haddam and the parking lot near Eagle Landing in Haddam. Valley RR has graciously volunteered their paddle boat as means to ferry spectators back and forth across the River. Goodspeed will host some theatrical events geared towards families, and there will be other historical exhibits and the Moodus Drum and Fife. An antique car show is also planned We are asking residents and business owners to participate by hanging an American flag that day or by decorating with red, white and blue bunting. Businesses are encouraged to create special lunch menus to celebrate the centennial and share in the spirit of the centennial Valley RR will be offering free paddle boat rides back and forth across the river from 9-10am to mark the celebration There will also be an antique car show at Eagle Landing If you have a specific business idea that you would like to do please contact me in order that I can forward it to the East Haddam EDC. The deadline is May 15 to make the printed program that will be available for the centennial Please forward this email to anyone I may have missed!... Liz W. Glidden, Town Planner, Town of Haddam, 860-345-8531 x 219, 30 Field Park Drive, Haddam, CT 06438, townplanner@haddam.org Sounds very cool to us! Thanks so much Jack for the forwarded info! Weve always enjoyed the Haddam-East Haddam Swing Bridge that spans the CT River (as part of CT Route 82, a.k.a. Bridge Road and/or Norwich Road) right by the Goodspeed Opera House. For reference, heres a nice site with some beautiful images of the Bridge: http://lifeonabridged.blogspot.com/2012/02/east-haddam-swing-bridge-east-haddam.html . We will be on the lookout for any further updates, especially about the antique car show that was mentioned in Planner Gliddens original message (the underlining there was added by meand Eagle Landing, by the way, is a CT State Park that is located directly across the river from the Goodspeed Opera House, on the Haddam side, reference: http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?A=2716&Q=478672), and do our best to keep this listing updated with the latest and greatest news *5/8/2013 IMPORTANT UDATES We heard recently that Mr. Richard Beckwith (richard_beckwith@sbcglobal.net) of the Belltown Antique Car Club was in charge of invitations and set up in connection with the antique auto parade & display parts of the overall Swing Bridge Centennial event, and so we e-mailed him to ask about how interested antique auto owners might go about getting involved. Mr. Beckwith wrote back to us in an e-mail dated 5/4/2013following is his response: Steve, Thanks for your reply about the bridge celebration. We are looking for Early antique cars for the show and parade. If people want to attend in newer cars, they will have to park with the general public I have since written back to Mr. Beckwith to request an explanation of what Early means in relation to antique cars (i.e. whether that means a cut-off year of some sort, etc.), and any other possible details about antique auto participation, and will update this listing again with any further info that we may receive from him. (this event was originally added to this calendar as of 1/25/2013, then briefly deleted while we waited to hear from Jack that the info was approved for publication, and after it was, it got re-added as of 2/7/2013; additional important updates regarding antique auto participation were added to this listing as of 5/8/2013)

JUNE 15, 2013, Saturday, New Milford Housatonic Valley Region AACA's "2013 Wings & Wheels Event," at Candlelight Farms Airport in New Milford, CT. webmaster's note - I just received the "January Meeting Reminder" newsletter from HVR-AACA in today's mail, and found this event listed, without any other details--but I did not want to waste any time in getting it onto this Calendar, so that those interested in a very cool-sounding event (possibly with some airplane-type attractions?) can make plans to attend. New date set for our car show up at the Candlelight Airfield, on Saturday, June 15, with June 22 as the rain date. Please put the date(s) on your personal calendars. Although this will be a much abbreviated show than we have had in the past, it will take every resource we can muster. No classing of cars and no judging of cars. Sort of like a cruise but with enhancements...and...there will be airplanes!..." It was noted elsewhere in the same newsletter issue that the club was told by the airfield management that it could not have the show in May because the airfield owners said that "it is always too wet in May." And there you have it! (this event was added to this calendar as of 1/9/2013; new date for the event incorporated as of 3/13/2013)

JULY 13, 2013, Saturday, Wilbraham (MASSACHUSETTS) Monson Road Hill Climb Re-Enactment, part of Wilbrahams 250th Anniversary Celebration. I am not sure whether there is any opportunity for any civilian-type participation (i.e. any sort of display area for old cars?) beyond actually driving in the Hillclimb event, but at any rate, this sounds like a very cool event, even if only to be a spectator at, so definitely worth adding to the calendar. Ill bet some very cool old race cars might perhaps show up to participate?! Quoting from TheOldMotor.coms dedicated event info page, http://theoldmotor.com/?p=72515 : The Monson Road Hill Climb to be Re-Enacted in Wilbraham, Massachusetts The Town of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, is celebrating its 250th anniversary this summer and as part of the events planned, one will be a re-enactment of the 1908 Monson Road Hill Climb. Just north of the city the Stevens-Duryea was built at Chicopee Falls, MA In the town is Wilbraham Mountain and the Monson Road passes over it on its way to the neighboring town of Monson. On the steep one-mile climb up the Mountain, the Springfield Auto Club sponsored a hill climb on September 11, 1908 Stevens-Duryea, Knox, Buick sent their teams Buick sent its expert driver Bob Burman. The drivers had four days to practice on the steep climb before the main event was held The event attracted national attention and (was covered) in Automobile Topics magazine issues, August 22, 1908, and September 19, 1908 where the Stevens-Duryea took the most class wins, which totaled seven The event will be re-enacted on July 13th, 2013 from 7 am to 5 pm on Monson Road and Main St. in Wilbraham. Details can be found on the Wilbraham Hill Climb Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/WibrahamHillCimb), at the Town of Wilbraham website (http://www.wilbraham-ma.gov/), and at the VSCCA (http://www.vscca.org/index.cfm) who is running the hill climb event From some additional googling, it appears that the Town of Wilbraham has also set up a dedicated web site to encompass all of the Wilbraham 250th Anniversary information, and you can check that out at: http://wilbraham250.org (this event was added to this calendar as of 4/9/2013)

Inside the envelope were a cover letter dated 2/20/2013, from Bill Hick, of the Galaxy Community Council (and also past President/Director of the Connecticut Valley Region AACA & VMCCA), who I of course recognized thru his affiliation with the CVR-AACA, of which I am a dues-paying member. In reading through Mr. Hicks letter, and the other information sheet that was also enclosed, I was very impressed at what a great and super-comprehensive-sounding event was being planned out for August 24th and 25th, up in Chicopee! The heading to Mr. Hicks letter labeled it as An Invitation To Join Us For a Major Motor Event, and I dont think thats an exaggeration in any way! And most definitely worth adding to our calendar for sure! I scanned both pages, and uploaded them to our server, so that you can read all the details yourself. Mr. Hicks cover letter is viewable at: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/NewEnglandWingAndWheelsCoverLetterR.jpg . The other page of event details is also now viewable online at: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/NewEnglandWingAndWheelsInfoPageR.jpg . And just for good measure, I made a better, higher-resolution scan of the event logo and imprinted letterhead from the information page, which you can view online at: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/NewEnglandWingAndWheelsLetterheadLogoR.jpg . Finally, as per the info sheet, there is also a dedicated event web site, which has all of the above, plus much more information, downloadable forms, and what-not pertaining to the event, and you are encouraged to check that out at: http://www.greatnewenglandwingsandwheels.com/ . Thanks very much to Mr. Hicks and his committee for keeping us on the mailing list for this positively wonderful-sounding event, and I sure hope we can make it there to participate! OCTOBER 13, 2013, Sunday, Branford Columbus Day ParadeFirst Time Ever in Branford, presented by The Columbus Day Committee of Greater New Haven, and with assistance from the Italian American Social Club of Branford. webmasters note - We saw a large banner advertising this event posted on the side of an antique car that was participating in the 2012 Branford Holiday Festival Parade (click on link for image: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/BfdXmasPrd12ColDayPrd13Bnnr1k.JPG), and then another banner on another antique car next to it that advertised the Italian American Social Club of Branford, Established 1932, and so afterwards, we went to the Branford Italian American clubs web site (http://www.iaclubbranford.com/) and sent them an inquiry about the event (the fact that two antique autos were advertising it I took as a very good sign!). We received a very nice note a short time later from their President, Jeff Vailette, who wrote: Steve: The Greater New Haven Columbus Day Parade comes to Branford for the first time on Sunday, October 13th, 2013 Thanks so much for your interest. CRUISE NIGHTS (& Other Recurring Car Gatherings)
IMPORTANT: Since the world of Cruise Night listings seems to be especially filled with old, out-of-date information--which has, on occasion, led to frustrating drives to non-existent cruises (we speak from direct personal experience!)--we've decided to do our best to only list confirmed listings (though we still urge you to call ahead before making any long trips, since we cannot guarantee anything), which we'll clearly highlight with a noticeable color--we used red for confirmed '11's--and are going back to fuchsia for the confirmed '12's since that's what we've also been doing for the 2011 car show listings above--and it looks like it'll be back to red for the new 2013 listings!... Anyway, now that it's the New Year, if you have any confirmed 2012 cruise event listings, please send us yours--especially those Shoreline-oriented, for inclusion here--Thanks! *1/24/2012 UPDATE - As of today, we've deleted all 2010 & ealier cruise listings, so as of now, we are only including previously confirmed 2011 and 2012 events--and so, if you don't see your favorite local-area cruise night listed here, please send us along the info (hopefully along with a contact for those who may need to request more info)--thanks again!

Cap off the evening with an ice cream cone. Parking and admission is free!... webmasters note We were browsing the Ocean Beach Park web site recently and were very pleased to see the 2013 Monday Cruise Night season listed, date-by-date, starting off with Monday, May 13th, 2013, and running all the way to Monday, September 9th, 2013, which is listed as the final event for the season. Ive attended this cruise night many times over the past several years and its always one of my favorite summertime things to do. You just cant beat the atmosphere of Ocean Beach Park, where youre right by the ocean and the legendary Boardwalk, and the mix of great oldies music (now it appears associated with WNLC, rather than Kool 101 as its been in years-passed), plus all the rides and other goings-on right nearby at the Park. In all, its what summertime is all about in my book! (this cruise listing was added to this calendar as of 4/17/2013)

Additional info - I also looked up the web site for Nature's Art, which lists the street address of the place as: "1650 Hartford-New London Turnpike, Oakdale, CT 06370," and here is the "Directions" link from their site (very easy to get to from I-95): http://www.thedinosaurplace.com/plan/directions.shtml (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/28/2013)
