MARCH 7, 2009, Saturday, Middlebury - Saturday Seminar at the Golden Age of Trucking Museum. The morning speaker will be Fire Chief Crawford Slason of The Westbury Fire Department and Connecticut Cellar Savers. Chief Slason was actively involved in forming The Connecticut Cellar Savers Fire Museum which is located in Portland Connecticut and is home to numerous historical photographs and fire related equipment and memorabilia. The Fire Museum has loaned the Trucking Museum a portion of its display and Chief Slason will be discussing the history of the items on loan and will be taking questions during his presentation. A luncheon will be served and the afternoon speaker will be Carlton O. Pate III who is the author of Pates Early Ford Automobile Encyclopedia. MARCH 22, 2009, Sunday, Taunton (MASSACHUSETTS) - MassCar Model Club's 21st Annual Model Car Exhibition, at the Holiday Inn-Taunton, 700 Myles Standish Blvd., Exit 9 (Bay Street; the hotel is clearly visible from the highway) off Route 495, in Taunton, MA. Info: www.masscar.com . Additional info - This obviously isn't an old car event, but it is sort of a "car-related event," and is held indoors, at a time of the year when there's probably not much other car-related stuff available to do in the Northeast--we are passing it along for your info... (this event was added to this calendar as of 1/15/2009)
MARCH 29, 2009, Sunday, Maynard (MASSACHUSETTS) - "Winter Blahs Auto Parts Swap & Sell," 9:00am, at the Elks Club, Maynard, MA." We ran across this listing on a "New England Racer" web site - http://neracer.com/news08/?page_id=48 , and thought it might be of interest for those looking for something to do on a cold weekend... Additional info: We looked up the Maynard Elks Club and the street address appears to be 34 Powder Mill Road, Maynard, MA 01754 (this event was added to this calendar as of 1/27/2009)
APRIL 1, 2009, Wednesday, North Haven - Friendly's Fundraiser Night to benefit The Animal Haven, 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at Friendly's Restaurant, Universal Drive (Target Plaza), North Haven, CT. Quoting from The Animal Haven's Chris Gagne (cgagne@rwater.com), who sent an electronic copy of the event flyer as part of a broadcast email dated 3/16/2009: "...Visit Friendly's/Help Animal Haven...if you go to Friendly's in North Haven (Target Plaza) on April 1st, from 5 to 8 p.m., Animal Haven will earn 10% of the sale proceeds. Eat in or take out! There will be free door prizes, too, and a coloring contest for the kids... Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you know...thanks!..." Sounds good to us, thanks for the heads-up! webmaster's additional note: Obviously this isn't a car event, but we are, and always will be, big believers in The Animal Haven mission, and like to do whatever we can to help out this very fine organization. Additional info: I believe the Universal Drive exit off of I-95 is #9, a.k.a. the Montowese Avenue exit; Universal Drive is located on the west side of the highway, and roughly parallels I-91 in that area. Finally, for more information about The Animal Haven, you can visit their online home at: http://www.theanimalhaven.com/ - and you can also check out additional details on this and other Animal Haven fundraiser events online at their events page: http://www.theanimalhaven.com/events.php (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/16/2009)

APRIL 11, 2009, Saturday, North Haven - "... 2nd Annual Cruzin' Car Show, North Haven Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School, 97 Washington Avenue, 4pm, Best In Show: 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place chosen by spectators... registration $10, general admission $3, goody bag to the first 50 cars, DJ, 50/50 Raffle, food... directions: New York, Fairfield, Bridgeport, New Haven: I-91N To Exit 11, merge onto Route 22, take a left on Route 5, School is 1/4 Mile on the left; Springfield, Hartford: I-91S to Exit 12, take a left on Route 5, school is 1/2 mile on right, Info: (866) 942-5627..." webmaster's note: We ran across this listing published on the Special Interest web site, and have transcribed it exactly as it appears there. We looked at the North Haven Academy web site events page, and did not see this show listed there (maybe there is a delay in getting the listing on to their web site): http://www.northhavenacademy.com/html/events/index.cfm - so, I would perhaps want to be extra careful (call ahead to verify) before traveling any distance to attend. Meanwhile, I've also sent the North Haven Academy a note to see if there was any other information about the event available (for instance, it was also not clear to me if the "4pm" note meant the starting time or the ending time), and I will follow up here with any additional information updates that I am able to receive. *4/7/2009 update - I received a nice note in response to my inquiry, dated 4/6/2009, from Emilsa Santana (emilsas@northhavenacademy.com) who attached an electronic copy of the official event flyer and this cover note: "...Attached is the flyer we have with all the additional information. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you. Thank you! - North Haven Academy Paul Mitchell School..." The flyer contained all of the above information that was originally gleaned from the Special Interest web site listing (including the "4:00pm" listing--so we can only assume that that's when interested car show participants and spectators are supposed to show up...), plus this additional information: "All proceeds to benefit these foundations (with the foundation names were presented in logo form): Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation, The Larry King Cardiac Foundation, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, City of Hope, Food 4 Africa, Cancer Schmancer Foundation, and one more that was so light on the flyer that I could not figure out what it said. I would be happy to send along an electronic copy of the event flyer to anyone who's interested--e-mail me at CommonGear@aol.com and be sure to let me know what you are asking for. Unfortunately it appears I have a family obligation happening right around that time on Saturday the 11th, so I probably will not be able to make it over there--we would definitely be interested in any post-event reviews and/or photos, from anyone who cares to send 'em along, though! (this event was added to this calendar as of 4/1/2009; updates based upon a response to our inquiry were added here as of 4/7/2009)
APRIL 18, 2009, Saturday, Plainfield - "...Swap Meet presented by The Friends of the Haul of Fame, Saturday, April 18th, 2009 (and also Saturday, October 17, 2009), at 'Handcraft,' Route 12, Plainfield, CT; watch for signs off Exit 87, Route 395, 1 mile south of McDonald's on Route 12...Food available on site; all vendor sites still only $15 (20x30)...always plenty of good deals on: engines, tractors, antiques, machinery, tools, collectibles...For more information call: Larry Dudek 860-376-2306 evenings only, Todd Babbitt 860-376-6669 evenings only..." webmaster's note: The above information was transcribed from a printed flyer that was received within a correspondence postmarked 19 March 2009, from our old friend Mr. Leo Andstrom of Plainfield, CT (long time Volkswagen people from this area will recognize Leo as VW-specialist Mark's dad). Leo's handwritten notes on the flyer included the following: "...Steve, can you put a notice of our FHF (Friends of the Haul of Fame) 4/18/2009 Swap Meet (in your calendar)?...Thanks, Leo.." Sounds good, Leo-and thanks for the heads-up! Additional info - The "Haul of Fame" is an extremely impressive antique trucking museum that is located at 133 Packer Road, in Canterbury, CT, telephone 860-546-6733; we were very fortunate to have visited there many years ago, as part of a tour with the old Shoreline Antique Auto Club. I've heard from Mr. Andstrom from time to time in more recent years about the Haul of Fame, and I'm glad to hear that it's still there and still functioning as a museum. Here is a link to a Boston Globe review of both the Haul of Fame, and the Golden Age of Trucking Museum in Middlebury, from a few years ago that I turned up with a bit of googling: http://www.boston.com/travel/explorene/connecticut/articles/2006/12/17/on_view_for_the_long_haul_rigs_rusted_to_pristine?s_campaign=8315 - In all, it sounds like a good event, and benefits a worthy cause--thanks again Mr. Andstrom for passing along the event notice! (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/24/2009)

There was also a cover letter enclosed which contained much of the same information from the flyer, and with this additional information: "...All classic cars will be parked at Sports Haven's paved parking lot. Be sure to get there early because parking is on a first come, first serve basis. Parking is also limited to the capacity of the lot..." Hats off to WPLR, Splash Car Wash, and CT Motor Club AAA for organizing this event to benefit those in need--the Connecticut Food Bank. (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/30/2009)

Additional info - Quoting from Morgan School Transportation Technology Instructor Mr. Jay Cole's e-mail message of 3/26/2009, which included the electronic copy of the official event flyer from which we transcribed the above information: "...Hi Steve, Thank you so much for your continued support and promotion of The Morgan School Car Show, the students and I appreciate your help. I have attached a flyer with the pertinent information - most of all please note the new location! We will be at The Morgan School. (webmaster's note: That of course means that the event will not be at the Westbrook Tanger Outlets where it has been held in years past)... Additionally, the students recognize the need and importance of our food collection this year... We look forward to seeing you and all of the Shoreline Antique Automobile Connection members!... See you on May 9th, Jay Cole..." Sounds great, Mr. Cole, and thanks again for the heads-up & flyer copy! Participants: please don't forget to bring along your nonperishable food donation, in addition to your entrance fee $'s. Our hats are off to The Morgan School Transportation Technology program students, teachers, and advisors again this year for organizing this very enjoyable early-season Shoreline-area automobile event, and also for remembering our fellow man who may not be as fortunate. (this listing was originally found on the Westerly-Pawcatuck Region AACA March 2009 newsletter events page, and was added to this calendar as of 3/11/2009; it was subsequently updated, with important information regarding the new location, and many other details, as of 3/26/2009)
MAY 9, 2009, Saturday, Middlefield - Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department 'Touch-A-Truck,' including Classic Car Show, 10:30am-3:30pm, Peckham Park, Middlefield, CT (Rain Date = May 10) - Quoting from an e-mail dated 3/11/2009 received from Lori Helmedach (firefightergrandma@yahoo.com), in response to an inquiry about the event that I had sent (her contact e-mail was listed in a Middlefield Town Times newspaper article about the event, reference: http://towntimes.ctcitizens.com/story/middlefield-volunteer-fire-department-hold-touch-truck ): "...I have attached a copy of the file of the flyer for the touch a truck... I thought you might also be interested in knowing that we will have antique tractors, and military vehicles the club will be bringing some in. Also we will have a large number of fire trucks. Concrete pumps, police vehicles and many other vehicles. The food and other various booths are being sponsored by other various nonprofit organizations. Each and every day more and more people are signing on to bring vehicles. At the present time this looks like it is going to be much larger than we had originally anticipated. Also anyone interested in purchasing tickets in advance can contact myself at the email address (firefightergrandma@yahoo.com) or Monday nights at the fire house tickets will available. Also we will have firefighters with them. If you would like any more information please feel free to contact me. I am very happy to have your interest and hope to see you there... Lori Helmedach..." Thanks so much, Lori, for your help with the flyer and the very exciting-sounding additional details! As noted, Lori sent along an electronic copy of the official flyer--let me see if I can quote more of the key details shown: "...Classic Car Show put on by Over The Hill Gang CT...no bicycles, no pets, no burnouts; thank you...Admission $5 per person; $4 in advance, under 3 free...'A community event featuring area businesses and their vehicles...An opportunity for children to get up close, ask questions, and actually touch the vehicles'..." An additional important update: Responding to a question I asked about the registration fee for autos participating in the Classic Car Show, in an e-mail dated 3/11/2009, Lori wrote: "...There is no fee to display cars. We have waived the fees because this is helping us out. Lori..." So, that's quite an attractive deal for the old car folks, I would say! Thanks again Lori for your very gracious help with information for this very fun-sounding and multi-faceted event! Additional info: I'm aware that Peckham Park is located "more or less" at the intersections of Main Street (a.k.a. CT Route 157), Baileyville Road (a.k.a. CT Route 147), and Strickland Road, with the actual entrance into the park located off of Strickland Road, and I'm also aware that it's not far from the well-known Lyman Orchards--just a little ways north along Rt. 157. Here is a very good directions to Peckham Park info page published by the Coginchaug Soccer Club: http://www.cogsoccer.org/directionspeckham.html . In all, it sounds like a lot of fun and worth-checking-out! (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/11/2009; additional information regarding car show registration added as of 3/12/2009)
MAY 9, 2009, Saturday, Middletown - Middletown Maaco Spring Car Cruise. Location: Maaco, 770 Newfield Street Middletown. Info: Mark 860-632-0106 or email: middletownmaaco@aol.com..." webmaster's note: This info was found posted on a page at "NoNeck's Muscle Car Site," http://www.noneckschevelle.com/carshowsct.htm (though I haven't tried that "facebook" link that was part of the listing-apparently you can go there to download a flyer?) - and I also make no excuses for not being super-enthusiastic about the "American" vehicle requirement (since I am an antique Volkswagen enthusiast). Anyway, it's a local car event happening at a time of year when there's not a lot of car events going on, so we figured no harm in passing the info along. Good luck! (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/24/2009)
MAY 16, 2009, Sunday, East Haven - First Annual Trolley & Car Show, "...First car show surrounded by trolleys, each car entry includes 2 trolley ride tickets...Music, raffle, food, trolley rides, trophies..." Sponsored by Shoreline Trolley Museum, http://www.bera.org/ . Event runs 9am-3pm, and the location is 17 River Street, East Haven, CT. Cost to enter is $10. Info: Wayne Sandford 203-469-7823. *4/16/2009 updates: We had first seen this event notice on the Hemmings Motor News web site back in February, where it appeared with a date of Sunday, May 17th--the text above was transcribed from that original Hemmings web site listing. Following that, we found this event listed in the Shore Line Trolley Museum's "The Tripper" newsletter for Saturday, May 16th, with a rain date of Sunday the 17th. More recently, while scanning the Special Interest web site in mid-April, we found the event listed, with a date of May 16th. Here is the full transcription of that listing: "...May 16, East haven, Trolley and Car Show, Shoreline Trolley Museum, 9am-3pm, Rain date May 17th, $10 per car includes 2 day long trolley ride passes; music, raffle, food booths, trolley rides, lots of trophies. Directions for cars: From I-95 North use Exit 51, at 3rd light turn right, enter Farm River Road next to Diner, follow signs; From I-95 South use Exit 52, left off ramp, at 3rd light turn right before Diner onto Farm River Road; directions for visitors: From I-95 North use Exit 51, at 2nd light turn right, follow signs to Museum; From I-95 South use Exit 52, left off ramp, left at 3rd light, right at first light, follow signs to Museum. Info: Big John 203-467-9540, Wayne 203-469-7823..." Even more recently, we noticed a pretty big article (with a couple of old car photos) published in the March 2009 issue of "The Tripper;" the following is a full transcription of that article (make note that the following was directed at members of the Museum who may not necessarily be interested in antique autos): "...Antique Automobile Show...A new event this year which we hope will boost attendance and revenue, and perhaps attract new members who also like old things, is the antique auto show. It will be held on the museum grounds on Saturday, May 16th. Note that this event will start and end earlier than the typical operating day, with antique autos arriving starting at 7am. Doors open to the public at 9am, and the autos will be departing at 3pm... To make this possible, we are asking for your assistance in a number of areas. First, we need people to help direct cars along Alex-Warfield Road and into their display stalls throughout the yard area. We'll also need staffers at the check-in table and at the food service tables. We'll be serving coffee in the AM and then hot dogs, hamburgers, and cold drinks for lunch. And of course we need qualified trolley operators out on the line... Much of the setup, ordering and logistics has already been taken care of. There's even a DJ who will be donating appropriate musical background. But we really need your help to pull this off and make it a success. If you can help out, please contact the event coordinator, Wayne Sandford, via email wsandf@att.net, or via phone 203-469-7823. Why not plan to make it a family affair? There'll be lots of nice old cars to look at, maybe some that your father or grandfather drove. In case of rain, the show will be held the next day, Sunday May 17th..." Additional info: I decided to check out the "Directions for Cars" info, as was published in the Special Interest web site listing. I proceeded to a small unmarked road next to the Twin Pines Diner, which is located at 34 Main Street, East Haven; per Mapquest, the unmarked road next to the Twin Pines Diner is listed as Farm River Road; there was a sign at the entrance to the unmarked road advertising "Art's Auto Service," which I later looked up and found to be officially located at 16 Farm River Road, East Haven-so we are pretty sure we found the right road. We drove down the narrow Farm River Road a bit, over a small bridge, and then eventually onto an even narrower unpaved (loose gravel-type surface) portion, that eventually looked like someone's driveway--at which point we turned around (so I wasn't able to verify that it led to a Trolley yard). But further study of the Mapquest map of Farm River Road, however, indicated that a little further south, the same road was labeled as "Warfield Road," which you may recall having been mentioned in the transcription of the event from the March 2009 "The Tripper" newsletter. So, it does appear we found the right road! We hope this research has been useful to our SAAC readers, and we wish a most successful event for the Shore Line Trolley Museum, which does so much great work preserving our transportation history. I am hoping to be able to attend, and will bring along my camera to hopefully be able to document this great-sounding local old car event! (this event was found on the Hemmings Motor News web site, where it is currently listed with an event date of 5/17/2009; it and was added to this calendar as of 2/3/2009; important notes relating to the date of the event were added as of 2/7/2009; revised the date back to 5/16/2009, following the appearance of the event listing for that date at the Special Interest web site, along with further corroboration from "The Tripper" newsletter, as of 4/16/2009)

MAY 25, 2009, Monday, Branford - Town of Branford Memorial Day Parade. We are very happy to report that antique automobile participation has once again been solicited for the 2009 Branford Memorial Day Parade, which will be happening on Monday, May 25th. An informational form letter and an organization sign-up form were both received in a mailing postmarked 2/18/2009. Since the antique autos and their owners are not an "organization," per se (nor is SAAC), I am obviously not going to be filling it out--but I will happily provide a copy of the form to anyone who may be interested (in case they may represent an organization who wishes to participate in this parade). The text of the form letter, from the Veterans Parade Committee of Branford, CT reads as follows: "...The Veterans Parade Committee of Branford cordially invite and solicit the participation of your organization in the Annual Memorial Day Parade and Exercises, during which our town will join the nation in prayer and reverent tribute to the memory of the departed veterans of all wars. All units are to assemble at the Branford Town Green by 0930 hours (9:30am) on Monday, May 25, 2009. all units will be in parade formation by 0945 hours (9:45am). Parade begins at 1000 hours (10:00am). The active and enthusiastic participation of units such as yours will make possible an impressive display of the profound respect and gratitude that we all owe to our war veterans, living and dead, who sacrificed so much that we might all live again in peace. Please complete the enclosed form and return to the Veterans Parade Committee ASAP which will allow us to place your unit in its proper order of march. Respectfully yours, Thomas B. Yester, Parade Chairman, 17 Stonewall Lane, Branford, CT 06405..." As noted, we're not going to be doing anything with the copy of the form that was included with the form letter, however, we are going to be writing back to Chairman Yester to request specific information about where he wishes antique automobiles to assemble. Historically, antique automobiles have been directed to assemble in the vicinity of the intersection of Blackstone Avenue, Taintor Drive, and Town Hall Drive, at the point where all three roads intersect Main Street (directly adjacent to the Branford Town Green, on the western edge); cars usually are asked to line up physically along Blackstone Avenue, facing Main Street (the "wrong way" on Blackstone), so that they can easily drive out to join the parade at the proper time. *3/24/2009 Update - I'm very happy to report that Branford Veterans Parade Committee Chairman Thomas Yester got back to me in response to my request for clarification about where the antique autos are to stage themselves (referencing my above descriptions about where antique autos have been directed to stage themselves in past years) before the start of the Branford Memorial Day Parade; in his response to me postmarked 6 March 2009, Chairman Yester wrote: "...Steve, Yes, this is the formation used for Memorial Day...Thanks, Tom." Sounds good--and thanks Chairman Yester for getting back to us with that important confirmation. Additional thoughts - We love driving our old cars in the Branford Memorial Day (& Veterans Day) Parades, as a way to remember, honor, and show respect & gratitude to our country's soldiers who have given so much for our freedom. Based upon my having driven old cars in the Branford Memorial Day Parade now for several years, it is my recommendation to try to get to the above-described antique car staging area early, since the area fills up quickly with tons of spectators. Also, it has been my experience that there is frequently an officer stationed at the South Main Street intersection with Blackstone, who will not let you drive the "wrong way" up the street to get to the staging area-therefore, you'll have to drive all the way up to Main Street and then come down Main to Blackstone, to get staged. Finally (like last year), it appears I'm going to be busy marching with the our Boy Scout Troop this year, so I probably won't be driving an old car in the Parade, but I'll definitely plan to have my camera along to snap some pictures... Please stay tuned to this space for any additional info/instructions that we may receive from the Veterans Parade Committee Chairman. (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/24/2009; clarification/confirmation about pre-parade staging location for antique autos was added to this listing as of 3/24/2009)
MAY 25, 2009, Monday, Old Lyme - The Lyme-Old Lyme Lions' 5th Annual Memorial Day Antique Car Show and Flea Market. Quoting from an e-mail from Beverly Lewis (foxglovefarm@sbcglobal.net) of the Lyme-Old Lyme Lions Club Publicity Committee, dated 3/3/2009: "...The Lyme-Old Lyme Antique Car Show and Flea Market will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2009, 9-2 at the Lyme Art Academy, Old Lyme, CT, 1-95 Exit 70. Sounds good to us-thanks for the heads-up, Beverly-and we definitely appreciate the great charitable work that the Lions Club does (especially in the realm of eyes, eye care, eye diseases-and also many other positive community projects and causes)-which the proceeds from this event I'm sure go a long way toward supporting--Great Job Lyme-Old Lyme Lions! webmaster's additional note: At the time we received this notice the Lions web site had not yet been updated from last year's information-so I guess the old advice applies: "Keep checking back..." And as far as the location and directions go, you can't get much better or easier than the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts right off of I-95, Exit 70...but if you wanted to read their own published directions info, you can view: http://www.lymeacademy.edu/new-england-art-college-directions.htm (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/7/2009)

Coincidentally, we picked up a complimentary Bargain News issue that someone was handing out at the Durham Fair this past weekend (we were there specifically on 9/27/2008), and were quite impressed to see the giant half-page display ad for the show on page 33 of the "Bargain News Local-Eyez Classifieds 'Durham Fair Show Issue'" that was wrapped up within the B.N. issue! Very eye-catching and informative--good job by Eric's family and the E.J.K. Car Show Team! Let me see if I can transcribe any more details from the B.N. display ad: "...Save The Date!...All proceeds benefit the Eric J. Kalber Xavier High School Memorial Scholarship Fund...All cars & motorcycles welcome!...Please no booze/burnouts/rolling boom boxes/pets or canopies...Drivers welcome at 9:30; no reservations on spaces...First 50 cars get a free gift; first 150 cars get a dash plaque; trophies awarded; 50/50 raffle; great food and music...$10 fee for drivers; $1.00 for spectators; free for 12 and under...Contact info: 860-870-8590, ejkscholarshipfund@sbcglobal.net ...Directions: Exit 11 off Route 9 north or south; turn left, Xavier is on the left..." Additional info - This event listing was transcribed directly from a postcard that arrived in our snail mail box on 4/22/2009. We haven't had the chance to check the Deep River Rotary Club's web site yet to see if any additional info about the event is published (like a rain date?), but we will certainly update this event listing if and when we find any other important info. There was also no return address on the postcard that we transcribed this information from, nor any number to call for more info, but presumably you can find out how to contact the Deep River Rotary Club by checking their web site. This event is one of annual summertime favorites here at SAAC headquarters--we've participated several times in the past years, and always have a great time--we love the "small town" charm of Devitt Field and the town of Deep River in general--the Deep River Rotary Club's annual show gets "Two Thumbs Up!" Only sorry to see there are several other interesting-looking old car events happening around the state on the same day! Wish we could take 'em all in... JUNE 28, 2009, Sunday, Guilford - "Taste Of Guilford's First Car Show" - quoting directly from the listing we just found on the 102.9 FM WDRC "Cruisin' News" page (http://www.drcfm.com/features/cruisin_news.php): "...Taste Of Guilford's First car show, 11am to 3pm at the Guilford Fair Grounds. Street rods, muscle cars, antiques, no cut off year, free admission, trophies, live music and food till 8pm info, 203-488-3242..." webmaster's note: I did a bit more internet research and found the overall event listed on a couple of other "general" (not car-specific) type pages, such, as the "Visit Connecticut" web site (http://www.visitconnecticut.com/events.html): "...Taste the Shoreline -- Guilford ...June 28, 2009...Fun filled, all-day festival with live music, food and children's activities. Location: Guilford Fairgrounds, Lover's Lane. Time: 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Cost: Free admission. Information: www.guilfordct.com or call 203-435-9677..." We also looked at the Guilford Chamber of Commerce page (http://www.guilfordct.com/) that was mentioned in the previous notice, and found it listed there also. Anyway, there you have it--I really wish I could go and check it out/participate with an old car, but I have other stuff to do that day. I will be very interested to hear back from anyone who does attend with their old car--and if you happen to take any photos, please also consider sending a few along (by e-mail to CommonGear@aol.com , or by snail mail to: SAAC, Box 3353, Stony Creek, CT 06405). Finally, sorry about the very short notice on this one-we just happened to be browsing the 'DRC "Cruisin' News" site yesterday (6/24/2009), and we're putting the info up on the SAAC site as quickly as we can. Additional info - The Guilford Fairgrounds is located on Lovers Lane, which is just slightly southeast of the Guilford Green, and just off of Boston Street (Route 146). The Fairgrounds are also partially bordered by Stone House Lane at the south side. Additionally, if you plug the official mailing address for 'Guilford Fair Concessions' into Mapquest, you'll get a very good idea of where you want to head for: 111 Lovers Lane, Guilford, CT 06437. Have fun and let us know how it goes! (this event was added to this calendar as of 6/25/2009)

JULY 10-12, 2009, Friday-Sunday, Bethany - The Nutmeg State Fly Wheelers' 3rd Annual Antique Tractor & Hit And Miss Engine Show, Features Old Cars, Trucks, and Tractors, "...at the Old Bethany Airport, Route 63, Bethany, CT...Car show (webmaster's note: had to highlight that since this is an antique car web site of course), Motorcycles, and Old Tractors and Trucks, Gas Engine displays...it's a real family show...vendors space...huge swap meet...call 203-247-2579 Steve or email to: DELCO52@YAHOO.COM ... cost is $4 adults, and $2 child..." webmaster's note: This information was gleaned from postings found at both the Hemmings Motor News web site (http://www.hemmings.com/ - in the events calendar section), and also a New Haven Craigslist posting in their "events" section, ref the actual listing: http://newhaven.craigslist.org/eve/988583752.html . I had some very pleasant e-mail contact with the listed event contact Steve last year, and though I was not able to make it out to the event last year, I was very intrigued by the very multi-faceted sound of this weekend-long, family-oriented event-and I'd sure like to make it out there this year. If you're a vendor, I would suggest your calling ahead for information on set up times and vendor space cost (since I recall that info was posted last year, but I did not see it in any of this year's listings). Additional info - The Old Bethany Airport is located on Route 63, Amity Road, in Bethany, CT--there is no" street address" per se I could find, but it appears to be approximately across the street from Munson Road--so if you know how to get to Munson Road off of Route 63, you're all set. JULY 25, 2009, Saturday, Stony Creek - "Cars on the Lawn" - part of the "Stony Creek 'Blessing of the Fleet'" festivities taking place in Stony Creek Village, between 11:30am and 1:30pm. Mr. Wink Brainerd, one of the organizers of this wonderful informal old car gathering, sent me a flyer for the overall event (of which the 'Cars on the Lawn' is only one facet), which I received after I had put together the previous brief listing from information I gleaned from another car-gathering-focused event poster hanging in Stony Creek Auto's window a week or so ago. In addition to the Blessing of the Fleet, which will be going on at 1:00pm, at Madeira Park and the Stony Creek Channel (high tide will be at 2:10pm), there is also: "Food in the Park," which runs 11:30am to 1:30pm, where the following can be enjoyed: "Hot pure lobster rolls, lobster bisque, New England clam chowder, hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages"..."Music in the Park," which will be a "Concert with Stony Creek Fife & Drum Corps and special musical groups," and, of course, " Cars on the Lawn," which is described as "An informal gathering of classic, antique, and special interest vehicles on the church lawn. No judging or prizes-just show it off." webmaster's note: I would like to add that it was a really enjoyable time being a part of it last year (our first time ever, and we brought our '60 VW Bug). There is a unique thrill in parking your old car on the grass in front of the Church of Christ--it almost feels like you're "on stage" due to the raised level of the grass above the street & sidewalk. And then you have the bustling scene of people coming and going to the Stony Creek beach, which is directly in the foreground of the Church, right across the road--and then, of course, the beautiful Stony Creek Harbor extending out beyond the beach, where you can also view the 'Blessing of the Fleet' going on out in the water. It's really a magical place to be, on a special day! The actual street address of the Church of Christ, where the car display on the lawn takes place, is 192 Thimble Island Road, Branford, CT (which gives Mapquest a good target). As I recall from last year, you drive up the driveway at the side of the church, go around the back of the church, and then come back out on the other side of the church, where you are now on the grass (people will be there to direct you). It also goes without saying that space on the grass in front of the church is limited, so getting there early is probably recommended-though even if the grass is filled by the time you get there, perhaps you can still park & display your old car nearby and be part of the festivities. And for you local boaters who may be interested in getting your rig blessed, here are some additional details, also as listed on the flyer that Mr. Brainerd sent: "Work boats, motorboats, yachts, pleasure boats, sail boats, kayaks, canoes, row boats, barges, tourboats, police & fire boats, and barges, are all welcome...Decorate the boats...Boat parade follows ceremony in park...Spend an afternoon at the shore..." (this event was originally added to this calendar as of 7/10/2009; many additional details that were contained in an electronic flyer that we received from Wink Brainerd were added to this listing as of 7/16/2009)

Rain Date: Saturday, August 15th. webmaster's note - Thanks to our friend Jack Tary for giving us the heads-up about this event, including going thru the trouble of scanning and e-mailing his copy of the official event flyer (from which the above details were transcribed). In Jack's accompanying note dated 8/5/2009, he wrote: "...Hello Steve, Could you add this event to your list? It's in Higganum and right off Route 9. Good location and should be pretty nice . Thanks, Jack..." Referencing Jack's comment about easy access off of CT Route 9, I looked on a map and it appears you'd just take Exit #9 (the Killingworth Road/Route 81 exit), and travel north on Route 81 a bit, and you're there (it looks like it's right below the intersection of Route 154--so if you find yourself crossing Route 154, you've gone too far). Thanks again Jack for the heads-up! (this event listing was added to this calendar as of 8/6/2009)
AUGUST 9, 2009, Sunday, Moosup - VJ Day Parade, Moosup, CT. Thanks to our friend Leo Andstrom from Plainfield, CT (our old VW friend Mark Andstrom's dad), we received a heads-up about this event. In a correspondence postmarked June 26, 2009, Leo noted: "...Moosup, CT has the only VJ Day Parade in the United States, always the nearest Sunday to August 14th..." Leo also sent along a couple of pictures of an old VW van that had been "creatively decorated" for the 1991 Moosup VJ Day Parade, that I may try to publish at some point. But Leo's mention of this event, and specifically his comment about it being the only one in the US spurred me into doing some additional research. It turns out that the Yankee Yesteryear Car Club has the Moosup VJ Day Parade listed on its events page (http://www.yycc.org/events4.htm), implying, obviously that antique autos are invited to participate. The YYCC web site listing specifically states: "Aug. 9th (Sun) - VJ Day Parade, Uncle Ken Merrill, Noon at Brodeur's Oil, Parade to start at 1:01pm..." Some further internet research about VJ Day turned up this very interesting and informative excerpt from a book called "Connecticut Off The Beaten Path" (by Ritchie, Bross, and Bross): "...Is Moosup (pronounced MOOSE-up) Connecticut's most patriotic town? Come visit them on the Sunday closest to August 14 (V-J Day, the day Japan surrendered) and find out. It always warms our hearts to see those brave veterans honored. The whole town turns out for its 'Victory over Japan' parade-sadly, the last of its kind in the country. You'll see flags, brightly costumed marching bands, and baton twirlers, but the day really is for the vets. You'll probably have to brush away a tear or two as you watch these brave men, some wearing chestfuls of beribboned medals, walking in the parade or lining the sidewalks. The marchers parade from North Main Street to Prospect Street. The parade starts at 1:01pm (the time Japan surrendered) and lasts until around 3:30pm. The parade is free; come early and bring your own lawn chairs. Call 860-564-8005..." (and you'd better believe that I've already gone to Amazon and ordered myself a copy of that book!). I then went and looked up "Brodeur's Oil," which was the meeting place noted in the YYCC events web page listing. It appears that Brodeur's Oil Service, Inc., is located at 28 Sterling Road, Moosup, CT 06354, so now you have an address that you can Mapquest for. Additional info - Here is another online info page about the Moosup VJ Day Parade, that includes a couple of informative maps (I think it's maintained by a marching band that participates annually in the parade): http://www.connecticutblues.com/Directions/MoosupVJDayParade.htm . Finally, I am going to assume that Mr. Leo Andstrom won't mind people contacting him for any additional information about the Moosup VJ Day Parade, and so you can write to him at 151 Lovers Lane, Plainfield, CT 06374. Thanks again Leo for opening our eyes about this wonderful-sounding and patriotic-spirited event! (this event was added to this calendar as of 7/2/2009)

AUGUST 22, 2009, Saturday, Thompson - "Vintage Antique Car Extravaganza," at Thompson International Speedway, 205 East Thompson Road, Thompson, CT 06277. webmaster's note: I found this listed at Thompson Speedway's events schedule page http://www.thompsonspeedway.com/schedules/TIS-2009.htm - I'm going to try to get more info on what it's all about...sounds potentially very interesting... and yes, we are also aware that Thompson is up in the far-northeast corner of Connecticut-but again, this may be an event that's very much worth the drive-stay tuned as we attempt to find out any more details... *UPDATES as of 2/26/2009 - Here is a nice response we received from Mr. Russ Dowd (pitcrew@thompsonspeedway.com) of Thompson International Speedway, dated 2/25/2009, in response to an inquiry I had sent regarding the 2009 Vintage Antique Car Extravaganza up at the Speedway: Steve, Thank you very much for you e-mail concerning our Vintage day in August. This will be the 4th annual Vintage day at Thompson. It is a day of both display and on-track activity for any and all SAFE antique race cars. The event features all types of both open wheel and stock car race cars. The race track is open for on-track activity for roughly six hours and we try to put like cars into groups for their hot laps on the speedway. Each group gets about 15-20 laps of track time and then the next group is brought out. This round robin approach continues all day and owners and drivers of these vintage racers have a great time on the big track here at Thompson. We also erect a big tent for antique racers that are for display only. The entire pit area is open to the public and fans are allowed to see these classic racers up close. We are looking at some improvements and additions for this years event and will publish a flyer in advance of the event to help to promote it Participating organizations have been Atlantic Coast Old Timers, Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club, National Old Timers, New England Antique Racers (NEAR), Maine Vintage Race Cars and Senior Tour Auto Racers (STAR) I hope this information helps and if you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us. If you would like promotional material on the event, please ask and, once it is available, we will get that material to you Many thanks, Russ Dowd, Dir. of Operations, Thompson International Speedway, 860-923-2280 Sounds greatthanks Russ for the very exciting-sounding details! Contact Barbara Blau to register for flea market: 860-628-0364..." webmaster's note: I ran across this one when browsing the Special Interest web site recently--sorry I was not able to give you more advance notice. I looked up "The Summit at Plantsville," and it appears to be located at 261 Summit Street, Plantsville, CT. It also doesn't look to be too bad a drive to get to from the Shoreline, so what the heck-if the weather's nice, it might be a fun thing to do. I have been to a CT Road Lancers event in the past, a few years ago, at another healthcare/rehab place on the Meriden/Westfield border (don't remember the name of the facility at this point), which was enjoyable and well-run. I don't recall a "Giant Flea Market" having been part of that event that I attended years ago, but it does sound quite interesting. (this event was added to this calendar as of 8/19/2009)

The Prospect town "campus" which encompasses several buildings, lawns, and a large central "green," gets filled with tons of old cars--they're literally parked "everywhere." I really enjoyed myself and look forward to participating again this year, if I can manage it. The information related here was recently found at the Brass City Cruisers web site (http://www.brasscitycruisers.com/), both in the form of words, plus a displayed electronic rendition of what appears to be the official flyer--thanks Brass City Cruisers for the info! SEPTEMBER 10, 2009, Thursday, Guilford - "...Cruise Night at Bishop's Orchards, 1355 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CTR. Benefits the Apple Pi Robotics Team. For info call 203-315-1934..." webmaster's note - The preceding listing was transcribed directly from page 31 of the September 10th, 2009 edition of The Sound newspaper (which we received in our mailbox on 9/9/2009). I also saw a sign advertising this event set up on the lawn outside of Bishop's the last time I drove by there, and since then, I've tried contacting the contact person listed at the Guilford "Apple Pi" Team contact page (http://applepirobotics.net/contactus.aspx) to see if I could obtain any more info about the event--such as if there is a rain date (since I've heard the possibility of rain for Thursday, September 10th). So far, no response from the contact listed there... The listed info phone number may be worth trying, though, since some googling appears to show it as the number of a noted professional hot rod building company located in Branford, "Planet Hot Rod," ref: http://www.manta.com/company/mt909c9 . Anyway, if I can find anything else out, I'll try my best to post it here... (this event was added to this calendar as of 9/9/2009)

As far as how to get there, it appears from a map that 1260 Newfield Street (Newfield St. also appears to be known as CT Route 3) is approximately at the intersection with Tuttle Road, and also not far off of CT Route 9, Exit #19 (the Route 372 exit); consult your map or mapquest for additional details. And from the main NAPA web site, you can get a Google map with the 1260 Newfield St. location pinpointed already for you at: http://www.napalocator.com/storedirections.aspx?sid=30256 (this event was added to this calendar as of 4/1/2009)

I would also like to thank John Colley who also sent along additional important details about this event via e-mails also in early August, augmenting the info from Mr. Kelly. Referencing the antique car rally visit, he wrote: "...by the way, the Fairfield Concours Car Rally will stop by the Redding Show at about 11:30am. We do not have a number of cars yet, but it should be quite a few..." Long-time antique auto folks on the Connecticut scene will doubtless recall the famed "Ridgefield" meets that were limited exclusively to pre-WW II vehicles--this event is indeed the legitimate continuation of the famous Ridgefield events, where the oldest of old, the rarest of rare, and the coolest of cool antique autos are shown. And this one benefits an excellent-sounding cause too--a winning combination in our book! NOVEMBER 21, 2009, Saturday, Shelton - "...'Feed The Need Tuner Fe(a)st - Food Drive & Toys For Tots'...Saturday, November 21st, 2pm-6pm, rain date Sunday November 22nd, at RiverWalk Park, 100 Canal Street, Shelton, CT...$10 per car with food or toy donation (non-perishable food items only)...Registration starts at noon, 1st and 2nd trophies...Proceeds to benefit the Shelton Jaycees, Spooner House Shelter, The Valley Food Bank, and USMC Toys For Tots...Vendors $10 for 15'x30' space; food vendors $35; vendors must pre-reg..." webmaster's note: I was looking at the Shelton Jaycees web site to get some information for a newsletter feature on the August 30th antique car show that the Jaycees held, and came across the flyer for this event. Sounds very cool, and if you tune in the electronic flyer, from where I transcribed the above information, you will also see classes listed for all sorts of import AND American cars, and trucks too, along with an array of "best of" awards to be presented also. I have written to the organizers to see if "non-tuner" cars are also welcomed to participate (I would suspect yes, considering all the good causes that funds and donations are being raised for), and will update this listing once I hear back from them on that--but meanwhile, I would think that it'd be a lot of fun to be able to get out with your old car to participate in a car event at this time of year (when there is so little else available for car people to do at this time of year). View the online flyer for this event at: http://www.sheltonjaycees.org/files/tuner_fest_food_n_toy_drive1.pdf - and the main Shelton Jaycees web site is www.sheltonjaycees.org - and you can also e-mail the organization at: carshow@sheltonjaycees.org *11/11/2009 UPDATES - Here's a very nice follow-up note we just received, dated 11/11/2009, from Jim Nissen (carshow@sheltonjaycees.org) of the Shelton Jaycees Tuner Fe(a)st Committee: "...Hi Steve, Not sure if this is a second reply or not. If so please forgive. YES any show vehicle can attend!... While this event is pretty much Tuner Car oriented, all show vehicles are welcome and we do have an 'Other' Show vehicle category... The concept behind the Tuner Car orientation for this is we're 'testing the waters' to gin up interest for a full-out Tuner Car specific show during the warmer months... We've pretty much made up our minds. We are definitely going to have our annual Antique and Classic Show again in August of 2010. AND We're ALSO putting together the plans to run a full out Tuner Event sometime in the Spring or Summer... We're feeling like there are a good 30 to 40 categories of late model Tuner Cars and it would just be impossible to combine the two events. (We usually have 45-55 categories of the Antiques & Classics)... We hope you can come out to our first fall Tuner Fest/Food &Toy Drive! I've attached a flyer and information about trophies. Please pass it along to anyone who may be interested... Thanks for your email and thanks again for the promotion at your web site! Jim Nissen (203) 521-2498, SJC's Tuner Fest Committee Member..." Wow, very cool, and thanks Jim for following up! We appreciate your welcome to "all" sort of vehicles, and also applaud once again the wonderful job you and your organization are doing to benefit the list of very worthy charitable organizations. Anyone interested in the FLYER and/or the SPONSOR LETTER, electronic copies of which Jim attached to his e-mail, can also contact me and I will be glad to send along an electronic (please e-mail me) or snail mail a printed-out copy of either or both (please provide me with your SASE). Go Shelton Jaycees! (this event was found at the Shelton Jaycees web site, and was added to this calendar as of 10/26/2009; important updated information was added as of 11/12/2009)
NOVEMBER 28, 2009, Saturday, Branford - "...'Tree Lighting and Annual Parade' ...5pm...'Kick off the holiday season with the Annual Tree Lighting and Holiday Parade. The parade leaves at 5pm from Branford High School, and the tree lighting will immediately follow on the Green. For more information or to join the parade, call 203-488-8304. Rain date is November 29..." webmaster's note: I've participated, with an old car, in these parades, several times over the years, and have always had a fun time. When I saw the above-transcribed information (appeared on page 39 of a recent New Haven Register/Shoreline Newspapers magazine, "The Curious Tourist," Fall 2009 edition), and with the Branford Recreation Department's phone number listed for more information, I wrote to them, asking if antique autos might again have an opportunity to participate in the parade. Subsequently I received a very nice e-mail dated 11/2/2009, with important information for old car folks who may be considering participating, back from Mrs. Dale B. Izzo (dizzo@branford-ct.gov), Assistant Director of the Branford Recreation Department, from which I will excerpt some quotes here: "...We received your letter last week and of course we would love to have you participate in our parade again... I will be the head contact as in year's past. Please let me know if you need further information from me. Otherwise every thing is the same as it has been. The parade will leave the High School at 5:00pm. Please if you could let me know how many cars will be coming. This is such a great even and I am glad that you have participated every year. I look forward to seeing you in November..." So, to reiterate, if you would like to participate in this fun parade with your old car, you will need to get in touch with Mrs. Dale B. Izzo (snail mail: c/o Branford Recreation Department, 46 Church Street, Branford, CT 06405; e-mail: dizzo@branford-ct.gov ; telephone: 203-488-8304), and let her know who you are, what you will be driving (and/or how many old cars there may be in your party, who will be driving in the parade). Some other important things about driving an old car in the Branford Holiday Parade that I think are also very important to note are: 1) Now that the clocks have "fallen back" again, it should be obvious to you that most, if not all of this parade, takes place in the dark--of course there are lots of street lights around along the (relatively short) parade route, but it is my feeling that your old car should have its own fully functioning lights (that is: at least headlights, tail lights, and brake lights, as a suggested minimum). 2) There are often some old car folks who like to "dress up" their old cars with various holiday-type decorations (tinsel garland, ribbons, etc.) for this parade, so if you have the urge to do so, I think you should go ahead with it! I, myself, have even experimented with some working mini-Christmas tree lights on the car (need a voltage inverter for your 12-volt car system in order for something like that to work), but not sure how I might do it this year if I don't happen to be driving our only 12-volt antique car (the rest of our oldies are all 6-volt)...unless I bring along a stand-alone 12-volt battery to hook everything up to... 3) Though the parade route is pretty short--it's only from the High School up to the Town Green, which, I'd guess is probably only about a quarter of a mile or so--it does move slowly, so your old car will be idling along for a decent period of time (a consideration if your old car may be overheating-prone), AND you'll get to exercise some of your (hopefully) highly-developed clutching skills (if you're driving a manual transmission, that is) on one fairly decent hill, leading up to where the Green is. So: Think about all of these things, and BE PREPARED! Also, don't forget to touch base ahead of time with Mrs. Izzo of the Branford Rec. Department, as she requests all old car folks to do. That's about it--perhaps I'll see you there! (this event was added to this calendar as of 11/4/2009)

IMPORTANT: Since the world of Cruise Night listings seems to be especially filled with old, out-of-date information--which has, on occasion, led to frustrating drives to non-existent cruises (we speak from direct personal experience!)--we've decided to do our best to only list confirmed listings (though we still urge you to call ahead before making any long trips, since we cannot guarantee anything), which we'll clearly highlight with a noticeable color--we used fuchsia for confirmed '08's--and are going back to red for the confirmed '09's since that's what we've also been doing for the 2009 car show listings above... Anyway, now that it's the New Year, if you have any confirmed 2009 cruise event listings, please send us yours--especially those Shoreline-oriented, for inclusion here--Thanks!

I was alerted about this event by a mention of it over the DJ's public address system at the May 16th East Haven Trolley Museum car show, and then also, upon driving by the Rita's/TNT restaurant location later that day, seeing a sign out in front of the place, advertising the cruise night. Rt. 16 a short distance east to reach the Green). The roughly triangular-shape Green is physically bounded by Main Street, Hayward Avenue, and Norwich Avenue. We've participated in this cruise in the past, and there is usually one heck of turnout of beautiful old cars, and a really "happening scene" in general! (this cruise listing was added to this calendar as of 3/24/2009)

Tony..." Additional info - Harborside's actual street address is 946 Ferry Boulevard, Stratford, CT 06614--I believe they are directly adjacent to the Housatonic River, on the Stratford side (right across from the Devon section of Milford), and their web site is located at: http://www.harborsidebargrill.com/ (there is a "Directions" link at their web site that is also helpful). Incidentally that Route 1 bridge that spans the Housatonic adjacent to the restaurant is the very beautiful and very historic "Washington Bridge," and I'll bet you get a great view of it from the Harborside Bar & Grill--it was reportedly constructed in 1921, and more information about it is viewable at this web site: http://www.past-inc.org/historic-bridges/movable-washington-right.html (this cruise listing was added to this calendar as of 4/7/2009)
