*We are now building up our 2014 event listings... The 2014s are now back to being highlighted in FUCSIA... As always, we welcome you to please send us your CT Shoreline-area old car event listings! *FYI - As of 2/11/2014, we are eliminating the 2013 car event listings, but we'll let the old cruise night listings stay for now, since we haven't seen many 2014 Shoreline-area cruise nights announced so far as of yet (which also reminds me to remind you that we welcome your letting us know about yours!)....

This Calendar is originated and periodically updated by the Shoreline Antique Auto Connection, a not-for-profit enterprise run for antique auto enthusiasts, by antique auto enthusiasts. As the information presented here is gleaned from a WIDE variety of sources, there is no way we can vouch for the truth or accuracy of anything, and we STRONGLY suggest you get in touch with the applicable event contacts listed, to make sure the event is indeed going to be held (especially before you make a long trip to attend!). FEBRUARY 2, 2014, Sunday, Essex Essex Ed Groundhog Parade, 2pm, Main Street, Essex, CT; organized by the Essex Board of Trade (EBOT). webmaster’s note – We had worked with Jim D’Alessio last year on a listing for the SAAC Calendar for this event, which has historically welcomed old cars, and so, when I found Jim’s Facebook connection (via J. Alden Clothiers), I decided to see if there was any information available about the 2014 version. Here are excerpts from Jim’s Facebook response, dated 12/15/2013: “…Hi Steve - Our EBOT board of directors have decided (for a nice change) to not have Essex Ed in January this year, and instead the actual Groundhog Day, Sunday, February 2nd… Normally it will start at 2pm from the Essex Boat Works on Ferry street (at the entrance to Essex Island)… Have a Merry Christmas…!” As of this writing, I’ve written back to Jim to ask if antique automobile drivers who may not be Essex residents may have the option of participating, and I will certainly update this listing accordingly once I hear back from him. So, for now, please regard this event listing as “Information Only”—thanks! Additional info - Here are some reference links that may be worth checking back with, as the date gets closer: Essex Board of Trade on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Essex-Board-of-Trade/107493622624448 - and: Essex Board of Trade main web site: http://www.essexct.com/ . Additional webmaster’s notes - I was there as a spectator last year and had a positively GREAT time! And there were some VERY COOL (and I don’t mean just literally!) old cars in it also—here are a couple of sample pictures: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/EssexEdPrd13Cars1-1k.JPG - and: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/EssexEdPrd13Cars4-1k.JPG - and this view of the parade with Essex Ed himself making his way up Main Street: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/EssexEdPrd13UpStreet-1k.JPG . *12/29/2013 ADDITIONAL VERY IMPORTANT INFO – We heard back from Jim D’Alessio (jaldenclothiers@aol.com) of the Essex Ed Groundhog Parade organizing team with a gracious and positive response. I would like to quote from his e-mail note dated 12/18/2013: “…Good morning Steve, You can post it—just please let me know as the time draws nearer how many from your club you would expect to want to participate… Thanks, Jim…” Fantastic—thanks Jim! Now, as we would like to comply as fully as possible with Jim’s request, I have the following VERY IMPORTANT REQUEST FOR ANY OLD CAR DRIVER WHO WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE: Please contact me at your earliest convenience (best is to e-mail to me at CommonGear@aol.com) with your name, your antique automobile (year, make model), and your contact info (ideally both your e-mail address AND your cell phone number, for any possible “last minute” need to communicate with you), and I will, in turn, compile the list, and forward it to Mr. D’Alessio. I am not sure how close to the event date that he wants this info, but, again, I would say the earlier you can get me your response that you wish to participate, the better. And I would certainly assume that if the weather is bad, or even “questionable,” that you would be under NO OBLIGATION WHATSOEVER to participate (though I think that the parade goes on even if the weather’s not 100% great). So, again, if you want to do this, please do not delay getting in touch with me, so that I can compile the list to provide to the organizers—I am sure it will make their logistics planning a lot easier. THANKS! And speaking for myself, I am planning to drive my ’70 Bug in the Essex Ed Groundhog Parade this year (which has wonderful heat!), and am really looking forward to it! Thanks again to Jim D’Alessio and the Essex Board of Trade for their very gracious welcome! *1/14/2014 MORE ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFO - We heard from our friend Jim D'Alessio today, who checked in with these additional very thoughtful comments and ideas--quoting directly from his e-mail: "...I truly appreciate your enthusiasm and wanting your car club to be involved in this year's Essex Ed Parade. Just a couple of things to consider when planning for your group: Don't know how many participants you'd expect but, the parade is only about 45 minutes, going from the Essex Boatworks, up Ferry Street and up Main Street to the rotary. As it gets very congested at the rotary area (in front of Talbots) should you have a number of cars, they may want to not go all the way to the rotary, but to veer out of the parade and park in the lot of the Village Provisions convenience store. Option 2, the cars go up Main and take a right onto North Main Street and park along side North Main in front of those shops. Option 3, traffic goes up Main, around rotary and leaves town… It’s all relative to weather, but we always have town participants from The Essex Automobile Club, and The Belltown Antique Car Club from East Hampton, CT.I also now have a boat dealer that wants to have their boat on a trailer and in the parade. I'm sure they will leave town at the end of the parade… As I said, it’s all relative to weather, and number of people wanting to be involved. I just don't want you or your group disappointed if the traffic is congested and it gets a little crazy. For those with classic cars that come to town early, (12:30-1pm) even if they don't feel the need to be in the parade, but just want to show their cars off, it always looks nice to have these great vehicles simply parked on Main Street during the parade. Personally, if there are a lot of vehicles I think that’s the best option)… All things for you to discuss with your interested participants… Thanks again for your interest… Jim D'Alessio..." Excellent thoughts, Jim--and as a matter of fact, I think I'm going to do the "Get there early and park my old car along Main Street" thing, so that I can view and photograph as much of the parade as possible (as opposed to just the little part I'd be involved in), so, if you are there, and you see a tan '70 Bug Convertible parked along Main Street, you'll know who's it is! For those who may wish to participate in the parade with your antique car, there is still time to get in touch with me, so that I can forward your info to Jim and his committee--just don't wait until the very last minute--thanks! (this event was added to this calendar as of 12/17/2013; VERY IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL ANTIQUE AUTO PARTICIPATION DETAILS were added to this listing as of 12/29/2013; more Additional Important Thoughts, Ideas, and Suggestions were added to this listing as of 1/14/2014)

APRIL 13, 2014, Sunday, location currently "To Be Determined" status (but likely Greater New Haven area) New HavenWPLR Spring Classic Car Show... Quoting from WPLR personality and noted old car enthusiast AJ Man's (https://www.facebook.com/aj.man.18) Facebook post dated 1/19/2014: "...By the way, the 'PLR Spring Car Show will be Sunday, April 13th. Location TBD..." Sounds good, AJ, and we had a lot of fun checking out last year's version, that was held in early April at the West Haven Wal Mart--a very healthy turnout, even on a chilly day--here's an overall photo: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/WPLRSpringShow14Apr2013OvrlA1k.JPG .. And I believe the 2013 version also benefited Connecticut Food Bank--a great cause indeed... Anyway, we'll keep our ear to the ground and attempt to update this listing with more details as soon as they become available... Additional info - Be sure to visit WPLR's online home at: http://www.wplr.com/ ... *3/21/2014 UPDATE – Quoting from WPLR personality AJ’s Facebook post of 3/20, in response to someone’s question about the event: “…Sunday, April 13th, Sports Haven in New Haven... Very nicely done, WPLR folks!!! Additional info - I looked up the street address for "Winners Sports Haven" (for you mapquesters, GPS-ers, etc), and it's listed as 600 Long Wharf Drive, New Haven, CT 06511. The "Birds Eye" view option on Bing.com maps also gives a nice view of what looks to be a VERY expansive parking area (the round building is Winners Sports Haven itself, which is very visible from I-95 on your way thru New Haven): http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/SportsHavenFromBingBirdsEyeWARROW1k.jpg - so, this location certainly looks to have the potential to handle a very substantial turnout. APRIL 26, 2014, Saturday, Portland4th Annual Kenny Fletcher Memorial Cruise Night at Valli’s, in memory of Veteran Kenny Fletcher, to be held at Valli Construction, 22 Sand Hill Road, Portland, CT… Quoting from Mike Brown’s (valliconstruction@att.net) e-mail dated 2/10/2014: “…Hi Steve. Mike Brown from Valli Construction. Just a heads up: Kenny Fletcher Memorial Cruise Night at Valli's will be held Saturday April 26th, 3:00 to 8:00, with a rain date of Saturday May 3rd. Will send flyers next week. Thanks for all your help. Hope to meet you this year. Talk to you soon…” webmaster’s notes – I was able to make it out to this event for the first time this past year (2013), as a spectator, and had a fantastic time checking out the phenomenal turnout of all sorts of great cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, and much more. It was most definitely a “happening scene!” Check out these sample photos that I shot, at the April 27th, 2013 event: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/PrtlndFltchrCruz27Apr13A-1k.JPG and http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/PrtlndFltchrCruz27Apr13B-1k.JPG and http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/PrtlndFltchrCruz27Apr13C-1k.JPG . Unbelievable, and a great time! Great job Valli’s and all your helpers, and we’ll add the flyer to this listing whenever we get a copy from Mike. Thanks again Mike for keeping us on the mailing list… *3/12/2014 UPDATES - Quoting from a very nice e-mail from  dated 2/20/2014 our friend Mike Brown (valliconstruction@att.net) at Valli's: "...Hey Steve... Flyers in mail for you. Included original article in paper from first car show telling you a little about Kenny. He actually passed away one week before the car show he was supposed to attend. That sucked. Thanks for your help. Hope for some good weather. Thanks again, Mike..." And sure enough, when I went to check the SAAC's official post office box, sure enough, there was the large envelope from Mike Brown, postmarked 2/21/2014, and inside were several flyers for the event, and a print-out of the Middletown Press article, "Cruise night to honor Portland Army veteran who died of cancer," dated April 26, 2011, and written by Jeff Mill (jmill@middletownpress.com) of the Press staff. The article did a great job of telling about what a superb dedicated patriot and veteran Kenny Fletcher was, and all the positive things he did for his fellow soldiers and fellow man. I was able to locate the Press article online, and you can read it yourself at the following link: http://www.middletownpress.com/general-news/20110426/cruise-night-to-honor-portland-army-veteran-who-died-of-cancer - and there was also this great photo that went along with it, with the following caption: "...Submitted photo Kenneth Fletcher 1SG, far right, is pictured in Balad, Iraq, with Jesse James, Spc. Justin Derr and Spc. Arron Mclaughlin of East Hampton in this 2006 photo...." - we uploaded the photo to our own server at: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/KennyFletcherPhotoFrom2011MiddletownPressArticle.jpg . I also went ahead and scanned one of the flyers that Mike Brown supplied in the envelope, and uploaded it to our server, where it is viewable now at the following link: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/26April2014KFletcherCruiseAtVallisPortlandFlyer.jpg . Finally, in the world of Facebook, I found an official event page for the 2014 Kenny Fletcher Memorial Cruise, which is: https://www.facebook.com/events/213935952135658/ . I wish to thank Mike Brown, and everyone at Valli's, and everyone who is involved with this event, honoring a great man, and raising funds for these great people & important causes: Marie Fletcher, The Kenny Fletcher Scholarship Fund, and the Portland High School Class of 2014. Let's hope for great weather and another fantastic turnout in honor of Kenny Fletcher! (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/11/2014; important updates and flyer hyperlink added as of 3/12/2014)

Thanks Bill! The date is Sunday, April 27th, 2014 (with a rain date of Sunday, May 4th). Please take note of the great-sounding new location for this year: PNA Park in Wallingford. In reviewing the flyer, it appears that it may not be totally finalized, since the space below “Featuring:” at the lower right appears not to have its information set in place just yet (so we will do our best to get an updated copy posted whenever it may become available). But for now, be sure to Mark Your Calendar And Plan To Attend this most wonderful event, that features not only a great car and motorcycle show, plus great food, music, and other attractions, but most importantly it is a day to Thank Our Country’s Vietnam Veterans. And as a final note, how great that the date does not conflict with the Cardone & Daughter Automotive Spring Open Shop event, which will be happening the previous day in Westbrook! Sounds like it’s going to be One Great Weekend!!! Additional info - The flyer that Bill enclosed with this January 16th, 2014 correspondence has been uploaded to our server, and is now a clickable link at: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/27April2014WHVVDFlyerOverall.jpg . I am VERY psyched! We had a GREAT time at last year’s and are looking forward to the 2014 version! Quoting from the official flyer: God Bless our Veterans and God Bless the USA! *3/28/2014 UPDATES - Just got ahold of some of the official printed flyers for the upcoming Sunday, April 27th, 2014 "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day - Connecticut" event, to be held at PNA Park in Wallingford, CT, thanks to my old buddy Bill R. who is a committee member for the event! Thanks Bill! Comparison with the previously released electronic version reveals that the "Featuring" section is now filled-out (with "Suit Ty Thurrsty" as musical entertainment)--cool! We attended this event last year when it was held at the Guilford Fairgrounds, and it was a MAJOR great time, including, of course, one heckuva car show--but it was SO MUCH MORE than that, with its focus on thanking our country's Vietnam War Vets... Anyway, here's the entertainment info corner of the flyer, plus an overall view of the printed flyer. If you wish to obtain a copy of the printed flyer, to display at your place of business, or whatever, please let me know--I can get you one, and if I run out, I can probably get more from Bill. THANKS! Here is a view of the printed flyer OVERALL: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/27April2014WHVVDCTFlyerFromBillROvrl-R.jpg - and here is a detail view of the "Featuring" section of the official printed flyer: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/27April2014WHVVDCTFlyerFromBillRCloseNewEntInfo-R.jpg (this event was added to this calendar as of 1/16/2014; links to images of the official printed flyer were added here as of 3/28/2014)

MAY 26, 2014, Monday, Branford - Town of Branford Memorial Day Parade. We are extremely happy to report that antique automobile participation has once again been solicited for the 2014 Branford Memorial Day Parade, which will be happening on Monday, May 26th. We have been in contact with Mr. Juris Patrylak of the Branford Veterans Parade Committee this year, and, as per his latest phone message received just a couple of days ago, antique automobiles are indeed being welcomed back for participation in the Branford Memorial Day Parade this year! I am filling in details of this listing myself for now (based on my having participated in many of these parades in the past with an old car—including last year, 2013), but will also be sending a copy of this listing to Juris for his review & approval ASAP, and if there are any changes needed, I’ll get them incorporated here ASAP also... The published starting time for the Branford Memorial Day Parade is 10am, and I would definitely advise your getting there even earlier with your antique car, since the police by that time are already restricting “regular” traffic flow in the area, and there are floods of spectators, etc., everywhere around the Green at that time. From what I recall in past years, at 10am there are ceremonies honoring those soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country prior to the start of the parade. Following those observances, the various groups (including veterans, scouts, fife & drum corps, other civic organizations, and then eventually the antique cars, and I think the town firetrucks usually bring up the rear) gradually flow out onto Main Street, from the Green, and then head west on Main Street to start the Parade. In 2013, I observed the antique automobiles (both the “independents” like us, and also those that were specifically connected with various civic groups) all to be staged along Town Hall Drive (that’s the little curved road directly in front of Town Hall), facing the “wrong way” (west), and eventually to file out onto Main Street to join the parade, when directed to do so. Another thing I will add for now, and revise if needed following Mr. Patrylak’s review of this event listing, is that I believe in the event of rain, that the Parade is cancelled, and Branford’s Memorial Day Observances get held indoors (either at the Armory or the High School *3/29/2014 UPDATE - We received a follow-up telephone message from Mr. John Cooke of the Branford Veterans Parade Committee who wished to clarify that the Branford Memorial Day observances in the case of rain will be held indoors at the High School; they are no longer held at the Armory--thanks Mr. Cooke for the followup info!); so, if it is raining, I would advise don’t bother coming out with your antique cars. Luckily Branford’s Memorial Day Parade has been very fortunate to have had fine weather for as long as I can remember—but it never hurts to think ahead about what to do in case it is raining that day… Additional thoughts - We love driving our old cars in the Branford Memorial Day (& Veterans Day) Parades, as a way to remember, honor, and show respect & gratitude to our country's soldiers who have given so much for our freedom--and we sincerely thank the Branford Veterans Parade Committee for once again inviting antique cars to participate. Please stay tuned to this space for any additional info/instructions/directions that we may receive from the Branford Veterans Parade Committee. We sincerely thank the Branford Veterans Parade Committee for the gracious invitation for antique autos once again to participate in this wonderful town event honoring our country’s soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Finally, please be sure to check out our full online report about antique auto participation in the 2009 version of this event, at: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/BFDMEM09/OldCarsReport.html  A bit more additional info – If you want to check out another really wonderful “small town flavor” Memorial Day observance earlier that same moring, be at the Stony Creek flagpole (right by the Willoughby Wallace Library on Thimble Island Road) by 8am on the same morning (Monday, May 26th), to observe solemn patriotic observances, followed by a procession up the hill, ending up at the Stony Creek Cemetery for many more ceremonial & inspirational observances, and over in enough time for you to get over to Downtown Branford in plenty of time for the 10am starting time for the main Town of Branford observances & parade—this is what I usually do also, and I recommend it for anyone who wants to learn a lot more about the real significance of Memorial Day in our country. Thanks again to all who make it happen, and God Bless America. (this event was added to this calendar as of 3/21/2014; minor clarification about "rain out" plans added as of 3/29/2014)

CRUISE NIGHTS (& Other Recurring Car Gatherings)

IMPORTANT: Since the world of Cruise Night listings seems to be especially filled with old, out-of-date information--which has, on occasion, led to frustrating drives to non-existent cruises (we speak from direct personal experience!)--we've decided to do our best to only list confirmed listings (though we still urge you to call ahead before making any long trips, since we cannot guarantee anything), which we'll clearly highlight with a noticeable color--we have been alternating red and fuchsia in recent years to highlight the most recent years' listings. Since we had used  red for the 2013 listings--we will go back to fuchsia for the new 2014 listings!!... Anyway, now that it's the New Year, if you have any confirmed 2014 cruise event listings, please send us yours--especially those Shoreline-oriented, for inclusion here--Thanks! *1/17/2014 UPDATE - As of today, we're going to remove color highlights from any & all pre-2013 listings (but not delete them...just yet...)

** SUNDAYS (see details for listing of specific dates), New Canaan (** = confirmed for 2014) – “Caffeine & Carburetors,” informal morning gatherings and country side drives. Quoting from their web site’s “About” section (this was copied in early 2012—I have not checked to see if this wording has been at all updated for 2014): “…Caffeine & Carburetors is a gathering of automotive enthusiasts. We meet at Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee in New Canaan, CT 6 times year to enjoy our cars, trucks and motorcycles, and share them with like-minded gear heads, friends and family in and around Connecticut and New York… We have a tendency to lean toward sports cars, with the occasional Model A or 1920's Rolls Royce, but our emphasis is on foreign sports cars. We enjoy all vehicles and there are no sponsorships or awards associated with our gatherings… Doug Zumbach began hosting these gatherings in 1995. Each gathering falls on a Sunday and begins at 8am. We gather over a cup of coffee, and then enjoy a leisurely drive through the countryside. Caffeine and Carburetors is a way to indulge the gear head in all of us…” webmaster's note - I signed up for their mailing list last year, and per a 2/6/2014 broadcast e-mail heads-up, Caffeine & Carburetors (www.caffeineandcarburetors.com) has announced its 2014 schedule, and we quote: “…The 2014 C&C Schedule - April 13th *3/11/2014 UPDATE - Per a broadcast message today from the C&C crew (todd@109cheeseandwine.com), the originally announced April 13th start date has been replaced by April 6th... Also: May 4th, June 15th, September 7th, October 5th, November 2nd…” Very cool! I really hope to make it to one of them this season--even if only as a spectator...  Additional info - As always, you can go to their official web site for more info: www.caffeineandcarburetors.com - and they also have an active Facebook page, online at: https://www.facebook.com/CaffeineandCarburetors ... Final thoughts - It also appears from the broadcast message that the event normally kicks off at 8am on the specified dates (as it has in past years). New Canaan is a beautiful town in southwestern CT, through which a bit of the Merritt Parkway passes—Caffeine & Carburetors sounds like the perfect excuse to take a relaxed Sunday drive there with your old car! Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee is located at 77 Pine Street, New Canaan, CT 06840. (this cruise listing was added to this calendar as of 2/6/2014; a revised 2014 C&C series start date updated as of 3/11/2014)

"Nature's Art" is the same establishment that has that huge display in the center of the Connecticut building during the Big E, and is a pretty cool place to check out also. I haven't been to this event in a few years, but remember it being a real kick, with tremendous turnout of great cars and great folks, and I definitely look forward to getting back there this year! Chesterfield, by the way, is in the New London area, and I think is a section of Montville (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montville,_Connecticut). You'll have a beautiful ride there, and a great time at a great cruise night! Additional info - I also looked up the web site for Nature's Art, which lists the street address of the place as: "1650 Hartford-New London Turnpike, Oakdale, CT 06370," and here is the "Directions" link from their site (very easy to get to from I-95): http://www.thedinosaurplace.com/plan/directions.shtml (this event was added to this calendar as of 2/28/2013)

Quoting from the 8/13/2012 postmarked cover note that Mr. Parisi enclosed with the flyer: “…Hi Steve, Thank you for your interest in the Cruise Night. I have enclosed a…copy of the flyer… We hope to see you there!... Christian Parisi, Ted’s Restaurant of Cromwell, 860-635-8337…” Sounds great, Mr. P., and we do hope to make it up there (and my mouth is watering thinking about an authentic “Ted’s” steamed cheeseburger too)! The organization the event benefits is an undoubtedly great one--with responsible, motivated kids, mentored by devoted adult volunteers. And our local old car friend Bill Raccio is usually involved with it, so it's all good! *4/25/2013 UPDATE – We have uploaded the handbill to our server, so you can now click directly on the hyperlink to bring it up: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/2013GuilfordApplePiRoboticsBishopsCruiseNiteHandbill-Upload.jpg (this cruise listing was added to this calendar as of 4/22/2013; electronic flyer hyperlink added to this listing as of 4/25/2013; "Rain Date Invoked" notice added to this listing as of 8/19/2013)

Click on the following link to bring up a copy of the scanned flyer: http://home.comcast.net/~shorelinesteve/2014NorthBranfordMcDsAndDQCruiseFlyer.jpgAdditional thoughts - It also goes without saying that Rockin’ Richard is a local music legend, and does a great job of spinning the tunes, and keeping the party rolling along. We are VERY psyched to hear about this event for 2014, which now includes the Dairy Queen as part of the official hosts, so that’s going to be one rocking parking lot, there at the corner of Routes 80 and 139 in North Branford this summer!!!
