Westbrook 2009 Labor Day Weekend Show - Greg Mattesen imageAfter having recently put together the original page of reflections and "overall" type images from the superb 2009 Shoreline Recycled Teenage Cruisers' 6th Annual Labor Day Weekend Car Show in Westbrook, I was browsing back through a computer file of collected images from the event and came across a collection of positively great photographs that our good friend Greg Mattesen took the same day...

I thought: "Wouldn't it be fun to be able to present another viewpoint on this cool Shoreline-area old car happening?" Happily, Greg gave his approval for the use of his images and descriptions for the creation of this "companion page" to our original Westbrook 2009 report--Thanks Again Greg!

Greg's caption for the IMAGE AT THE RIGHT: "...(this picture) shows a close-up of the beautiful burgundy Buick Roadmaster..."

As it worked out, Greg, who is a fellow old-Volkswagen driver, had arranged to meet up with another mutual old-VW friend of ours, Bill Silvestri, who lives near Greg, up near the middle of the state, and the both of them caravanned down in their old VWs (Greg in his '64 Beetle Sedan and Bill in his '60 Beetle Convertible). Their destination was the meet-up spot that had been pre-arranged by the leaders of the CT VW Association enthusiasts' group. The VW folks' actual meet-up spot was the "Teresa Mulvey Municipal Center" (a.k.a. Westbrook Town Hall) on Boston Post Road (Route 1), which had a nice parking lot for us to assemble--click HERE to see my photo of some of the VWs assembled there. This is where Diane and I (in Diane's '54 Beetle Convertible) met up with Greg & Bill, and all the rest of the VW drivers.

Another of the VW people was a Westbrook resident and knew a fun way to approach the Elks Lodge, the "back way," which incorporated a brief drive along the shore. Leaving the Mulvey Center, we made a short jog east on Route 1 to Post Avenue, which took us all the way to the ocean, where we then took a left onto Seaside Avenue, which then took us all the way up to the Elks Lodge, where the show was taking place. Click on these hyperlinks to view two more of my own shots from the "mini-caravan" of old VWs cruising along Seaside: Our view of Bill Silvestri up ahead in his '60 Convertible, and our view of Greg Mattesen behind us in his '64 Herbie Bug.

And from there, of course, it was a day of fun participating in the Car Show itself. I'll reproduce Greg's original comments as they relate to each of his very wonderful photos, and add some of my own descriptive comments along the way, where applicable.

Thanks again to our friend Greg for sharing these photos & comments, all of which were gathered from a series of e-mails Greg sent, with photos attached, all dated 9/8/2009:

"...(here are) Some images from Sunday...(this) Image...shows Bill on Route 153 heading toward Westbrook..."

"...(this) Image...shows Fritz and Herb at the filling station..." (webmaster's note: "Fritz" being Bill Silvestri's 1960 VW Beetle Convertible, and "Herb" being Greg's 1964 "Herbie" replica VW Beetle)

"...(this) Image...shows Bill turning left onto the beach road as the Mierzes wait at the stop sign. Sorry about the blur in that photo: there was a bit of windshield glare that I couldn't overcome..."

"...Non-VWs that I enjoyed at the show...Bill and I both liked the two-tone green '50 Chevy..."

"...The Fiat 500 display complete with the 'lady working under the car' was really neat. It was fun to see one of these in person..." (webmaster's note: From my own notes, this was a 1971 Fiat 500L, owned by Joe Rose and Francisco Perez from Westport, CT. From the window card, it features "original interior and mostly original pan")

"...The Ford in (this) picture...caught my eye. I liked the resto-mod treatment, as well as the patina..."

"...I liked the color treatment of the Model A in (this image). The car was in beautiful shape, too..."

"...Steve and Diane both asked me at the show which car I would want to drive home if I had the opportunity, and at first I answered a turquoise '64 Plymouth Valiant convertible that I had seen. In retrospect, however, the red '57 Ford Fairlane convertible in (this) image would have been my choice. It was a beauty!..." (webmaster's note: From my own notes, this magnificent red '57 Ford Fairlane 500 Convertible was owned by Butch Forte--reportedly only the car's 2nd owner!)..."

"...The final photos of the Westbrook Lions Club show...In (this one) Diane and Bill discuss carburetion on the '54 convertible...Bill took (this) picture, showing Diane and I taking a break in between the VWs..."

"...(this image) shows the 'Press Journal' bumper sticker from the former Valley '66 Valiant. Diane explained that the...sticker had sentimental value to her family. The present owner also recognized the importance of the provenance of the sticker and kept it on the car--neat!..." (webmaster's note: That would be our long-time old car friend Phil Hamilton's Deep River-based '66 Valiant. "Press Journal" was the home-town newspaper of Vero Beach, Florida, where Diane's grandparents had a winter place. The "Valley Family Valiant" spent many a year in Vero Beach before coming back to the Northeast, where it was eventually acquired and restored by Mr. Hamilton. It was reportedly purchased new at a now-defunct Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in West Haven, CT)
