Fr. Maurice is a native New Jerseyan, having been born in Jersey City, the youngest son of Mary and Ed Carlton. He was educated at St. Paul's Grammar School, Jersey City, St. Benedict's Prep and St. Peter's College. After St. Peter's he entered the Benedictine Order at St. Mary's Abbey. He continued his studies at Conception Abbey, Conception, Missouri and Theology at St. Mary's Abbey, Morristown.
Father was ordained a priest on March 9, 1968 by the Most Rev. Lawrence B. Casey, Bishop of Paterson. During his thirty-one years as a Benedictine Monk, Father Maurice taught at St. Benedict's Prep, led retreats for religious men and women throughout the country, worked with the Worldwide Marriage Encounter and served in several parishes. In 1991, he joined the Diocese of Metuchen where he, again, served in several parishes as well as the McCarrick Care Center for ten years.
Fr. Maurice came to St. Joseph parish in August of 2003.
