HOW I GOT TO WHERE I AM (wherever that is)
THE SPORTS/RADIO ODYSSEY

It began almost 20 years ago when as a boy, I decided that my future
probably didn't lie as a professional hockey goaltender.  I had always messed with radio as a little boy. From making pretend radio stations on a cassette recorder (with interviews, music, jokes, etc) to doing play by play broadcasts while playing sports (from table hockey to Trac-Ball).  I often fiddled with the idea of being a broadcaster.  I could never decide whether to do music or sports though.  My early influences were the legendary Gene Hart of the Flyers, John DeBella of WMMR's Morning Zoo, and TJ Trout, the host of a similar show at 96 Rock in Ocean City.

After High School (AI Dupont '89) I started to follow my plan.  I went to the University of Delaware and was a four year varsity hockey play (Assistant Captain my Junior year and President of the club for my Junior and Senior years).  I also worked at the campus radio station, WXDR.  While at XDR (later named WVUD), I did every show imaginable (remember rap DJ Flava-K ?).  I settled into the Friday morning show (Jon and Steve in the Morning) chair and also became the Sports Director of the station.  I was able to follow the basketball team to the NCAA tourney in Indianapolis.

It was during my Junior summer at Delaware that I landed an internship with 93.5 The Beach (WZBH) serving the Ocean City, MD market.  I spent time doing work on the Harris and the Kid morning show and eventually became a third man on the crew.  I spent time in the promotions and production department as well.  During my Senior year, I worked weekends at the station and became a full time Morning Show member after graduation.  Starting with Harris and the Kid, moving on to the Cory,Doug, and Steve show, then the Cory and Steve Show, and finally going alone for a ratings period, WZBH enjoyed its highest ratings to date during this period.

At WZBH, I worked as the Assistant Program Director and as the Sports Director at sister-AM station, WSSR.  At 'SSR I broadcast the Sussex Central football games with Adam Edelstein. This team featured current New York Giant Luke Petitgout.

After a few years at 'ZBH, I hit the ceiling and was less and less satisfied being there.  I left for Wilmington after a few years.

Towards the end of my time at WZBH, I began working as the Public Address announcer for the Delaware Blue Bombers.  This was a minor league basketball team in the ABA.  I was with them for all 6 years of their existance and ended up being the radio play-by-play man as well.  The basketball was good and it was fun working with the team.

Between full time jobs, I picked up a 2 month stint as the Afternoon Drive DJ for Star 92.9 in Dover.  This Top 40 station was small but enjoyable to work with.  It was eliminated after the company was sold and is now WDSD.  Working this format was a good experience for me and it prepared me for my future work with WJBR.

During my two months at Star, I was approached to do some board work for WJBR-AM and FM.  It eventually became a weekend overnight airshift and then general fill work.  Two years after my rejection letter from JBR, I was on the air there.  I've been happy there as a parttimer ever since.  You can currently catch me every Saturday from 2-7pm.

Through some contacts at JBR, I was turned on to another play-by-play opportunity with the Delaware Clippers minor league football team.  I worked for the Clippers for two seasons before they went out of business.  I enjoyed working with that team as well.

My current 'Real' job is with WKHS in Worton, Maryland.  It is the second most powerful high school station in the country.  I have been the station manager for 7 years now and have had a blast running the station. The students are challenge at times but it's been a good experience overall.  I've turned down a few full time radio offers since I've been there.  Something about not having to worry about ratings and having the summers off makes this job fun.  Never say never but I can't imagine leaving anytime soon.

I always seem to have some kind of part time job going on just for fun.  I've coached hockey a few times, golf as well.  I recently did a season as the Public Address announcer for Goldey Beacom's basketball team.  I also do halftime reports for Blue Hen Sports on WRDX and AM1290.  I consider it an honor to be affiliated with the University of Delaware teams.  I still get to do some play-by-play when the regular guys have scheduling conflicts.  That's it for now, if the future is anything like the past, I'm sure I'll be adding to this page as time goes by.  Thanks for stopping in!
