Laset December I spent time in Montréal Canada with Jason Jaynes , and Richard Walker of Fabulous Films. I met some of the English voice actors! This recording was used for extra's on the DVD set!  Check here to see pictures and a couple movies I created from this once in a lifetime trip to Montréal.

Mysterious Cities of Gold Voice Actor gathering

9-12-05: Barcelona Spain, here is one of the streets featured in Episode 1.  I originally saw this in the French Fan Magazine, and during my trip to Barcelona, I saw the street.  It is behind the Santa Eulila Cathedral.

Perhaps one of the best cartoon series that I remember from my childhood would have to be the Mysterious Cities of Gold.

The series wasn't as big over in the USA as it was in UK, or other countries. Probably since the only people that saw this were children that had cable TV during the 1980's. I managed to record nearly all of the episodes in 1989, encoded them to video CD in 1999 (v1), and got the 5 episodes I was missing that year(V2).  In 2000, I received Les Mysteriéuses Cités D'or, and I also digitally remastered my VHS tapes. In 2001 I received several Taiyô no ko Esteban Episodes that I dubbed to make for my master copy (V3). I later made a DVD set from these and higher quality audio (V3.5)   Still at that point the English tapes had never been commercially available for sale anyplace.

To help with fair use copyright, follow the links below to get the other versions of the set.

For the French version in the US and Canada http://www.imavision.com (Les Mysteriesus Cites D'or)

If you are in another part of the world and want the french version please see http://www.amazon.fr

The Japanese DVD's are out of print, but you may still be able to get it at http://www.amazon.co.jp (piba 9060, piba 9061)

The German DVD's are at http://www.anime-virtual.de

I'd still like to see Esteban e le misteriose città d'oro (italian)

I have some mpeg movies from the series put online.

MPEG Movies and Missing Scenes – 12-6-07 re-added with Japanese missing scenes

The reason that I chose MPEG as my video format is that it is a standard, and it keeps "near" broadcast quality. It is also playable on multiplatforms and some standalone DVD players. The audio was cleaned up with Sonic Foundry's Soundforge and then converted to MPEG1 VCD using TMPEG. These MPEGs are a good sample of what my video CD set looked like. The missing scenes were integrated into my DVD set.  These are small clips of episodes for informational use only.

MCOG ep01 opening scene

V4 Episode 1 British Cut scene 3.16 mb The opening sequence as it was supposed to be, of Barcelona Spain in the rain. This shows the Japanese text and part of the scene preceding it of the Map of Barcelona- MPEG 1 DVD sample

MCOG ep2 missing

V4 Episode 2 Missing Scene 14.8 mb. This is my favorite of all the missing scenes. The USA English version was missing part of this scene, while the Japanese was missing the daydreaming sequence. It is an extended scene of the Esperanza going into the golden butterflies, re-edited with German and Japanese footage with great video and audio! MPEG1 DVD Sample.  The name of this piece of music according to the original cue sheets is "Condor Electronic" it is also known as St. Elmos Fire.

MCOG ep 4 missing

  Scene 1

Episode 4 Small missing scene 2.21 mb. This is a small scene of Pedro and Sancho getting splashed as Mendoza is rescueing the Children. Missing from the US Nickelodeon broadcast.

MCOG Episode 4 Missing

  Scene with Gomez

Episode 4 Gomez leaving the ship   2.9 mb. A scene where Gomez is leaving the ship, he says "What is keeping Gaspard?" in Japanese and slides down the deck of the ship. This is only in the Japanese version. (I have a translation thanks to Marc Brown)

Capt. Perez:   Please get on the boat!
Gomez: What is keeping Gaspard? (Lit: What is Gaspard doing?)
Capt. Perez: Please Hurry!
Gomez: (Exasperated noise.) It can't be helped!
Capt. Perez: My Esperanza!

MCOG Episode 4 Missing

  Scene of Pedro and Sancho

Episode 4 Pedro and Sancho sleeping  9.8 mb. A scene where Pedro and Sancho find themselves in each others arms while sleeping. The reaction of them seeing one another is only in the Japanese version or on my bootleg DVD set. The English audio I used was from another episode, and fit the situation almost perfectly. (full scene with Esteban and Zia redubbed)

MCOG Episode 4 Missing

  Scene 2

Episode 4 Building the Raft  6.18 mb. A scene where Mendoza, Pedro and Sancho are constructing the raft. I always wondered how they were able to make the raft in such a short period of time, they actually had a lot longer to chop down the mast, tear up the floor, and put the barrels on the raft.

MCOG Episode 4 Alternate

  Ending

Episode 4 Alternate Ending!  13.3 mb. This scene is not nearly as dramatic in the Japanese version. Our heroes merely paddle their way to the island and arrive. The scene in the English/French version was different and they had faced the sharks. Some of this scene can be seen in the Previous/To Follow segments.

MCOG Episode 6 Missing

  Scene

Episode 6 "Why did he take Zia away with him" 1.89 mb. One Line cut from the US Broadcast. I used high quality Japanese video and BBC audio from Mark Yates.

MCOG episode 27 Missing

  Scene

Episode 27 Missing Scene 8.63 mb After finding the raingod statue, and setting out toward the east toward the two peaks, Tao trips on a stick and can hear something on the ground. (really not needed since they all hear something moments later) Missing from the US broadcast.

MCOG episode 32 European

  missing

Episode 32 Missing Scene 3.08 mb. This scene was cut on the BBC, German, and Polish airings that I am aware of.  It was aired in the US and on the French DVD's.  It shows an extended scene of Pedro and Sancho using the Olmecs back for a see saw. He deserved it! VCD sample.

MCOG episode 32 Missing

  Line

Episode 32 Missing Line 2.47 mb. "All hells let loose" was cut from the American Nickelodeon Broadcast. The cut to this line was so well done I would have never caught it without audio dubbing. High quality video provided by Mark Yates, and audio provided by James King. VCD sample.

Menataur in Flying machine

Episode 38 cut audio  1.21 mb.  The US English Version contains this scene, but it seems to have been cut due to language. "Go on up Damn you climb higher" Has been replaced with "Go on up *obvious silence* climb higher". Why was this cut? Damn and hell were used throughout the series, including Gomez saying "make them pay for the imputence of that damn inca" and "Fire! Fire! Damn your eyes fire!" and most notably Gaspard saying "Damn those Kids!"  VCD Sample  The voices are of Richard Dumont, and Athur Grosser.

Update:  After receiving several more of the Japanese episodes and talking with people I found a few more "trimmed" scenes to the US broadcast on Nickelodeon. Somethings to be noted are as follows:

If anyone has anything additional to add to this about the other countries airings, please let me know. So far Australia has had the only full complete uncut (compared to the French VHS and DVD boxsets) airing of the cartoon series in english. South Africa also aired some of the documentaries.
