Planetology:
Unlocking the Secrets of the Solar System

"I can't think of a better pair to write a book on our solar system’s planetology than Tom Jones and Ellen Stofan. Both Jones and Stofan, friends since meeting in graduate school, are scientists as well as modern-day explorers...The authors use personal photographs to illustrate the science. One example, which demonstrates the fury of Earth’s own geology, shows Stofan and her daughter standing next to a large rock expelled from Italy’s Mount Etna when it erupted days before the photo was taken. Images like these make the book an engaging look at scientists at work."

"Astronomy always provides some of science's most stunning images, and Planetology: Unlocking the Secrets of the Solar System (National Geographic Books, $35) by Tom Jones and Ellen Stofan delivers the goods. More than a rundown of the diminished solar system, with Pluto and its brothers banished to "dwarf" status, the book delves into the forces, asteroid impacts, volcanism and erosion that sculpted Martian Dunes, Mercury's craters and Titan's lakes."

The mysteries of the Solar System are the focus of Tom's newest book, Planetology, published by National Geographic Books in November 2008. Tom and his colleague, planetary geologist Ellen Stofan, explain the dynamic physical processes that shape the faces of our Earth and its companion worlds. This spectaculr collection of planetary imagery from NASA, (including orbital views from the Shuttle and Station), is the perfect Christmas gift.

The War No One Told You About

"Brings alive the true story of an aerial band of brothers."
Col. Walter Boyne
past Director, National Air and Space Museum

Hell Hawks! is a riveting account of the gritty and unheralded battle, long overlooked by military historians, fought by the young Thunderbolt pilots of the Ninth Air Force in World War II. It's the true story of an aerial band of brothers (most barely twenty years old) -- the pilots and ground crews who worked and lived amid the cold and mud of their front-line airfields in conditions not much better than those of the GIs they supported each day. The authors follow the 365th Fighter Group, the Hell Hawks, from England-based interdiction missions supporting the D-Day invasion, across the Channel to their close-air-support base in a Norman apple orchard, to tank-busting sorties in the flak-filled skies over the Bulge, and finally to Germany for the final defeat of the Wehrmacht in 1945. Through dozens of interviews and dramatic images, the authors let the voices of pilots and ground crewmen tell what it was like to fly daily into the teeth of Luftwaffe fighters and Wehrmacht flak to help win the victory in Europe. Order Hell Hawks! here.

Read some of the Hell Hawks' combat history as they fought but at great cost through the final year of the war in Europe. To listen to an extended interview about the Hell Hawks with co-author Tom Jones, go here.

Strap in with astronaut Tom Jones for an exhilarating ride to orbit. Sky Walking: An Astronaut's Memoir is the inside-the-spacesuit story of a modern space traveler's rocket-fueled career. Join this three-time spacewalker on his four space shuttle missions, and meet the astronauts and their families who put their lives and futures on the line to explore the space frontier. Sky Walking, a true story of 21st-Century spaceflight, is available at your local bookstore, but you can order it here.

Heading Off an Asteroid Disaster

Tom is currently the chairman of the Association of Space Explorers' Near Earth Objects Committee. He helped its Panel on Asteroid Threat Mitigation draft and submit to the United Nations its report, Asteroid Threats: A Call for Global Response. This ground-breaking work proposes an international decision-making process to deal with the threat posed by hazardous Near Earth Objects. Earth-approaching asteroids, left over from the formation of our solar system, sweep constantly through Earth's orbit, posing a long-term threat to our civilization. The ASE continues its NEO work through 2010, supporting the U.N's Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space as it formulates an international response to hazardous asteroids. Explore Near Earth Objects and the Association of Space Explorers' proposal in Planetary Science.
