EFFICIENCY & SOLUTIONS
The best products - the ones you can always count on - tend to be the most efficient. These products display "cradle-to-grave" efficiency: efficiency in production, efficiency in use, and efficiency for long periods of time.
AMSOIL lubricants are synthetic. Their production is not wholly dependent on pumping crude oil from the ground. In fact, many kinds of synthetics can be made from organic sources like grain. When in use, synthetic oil has been proven to provide better performance and protection, extending engine life while reducing emissions and fuel consumption. But what is also outstanding about AMSOIL is that it outlasts regular oils by as much as eight times - and that means up to eight times less oil burdening nature.
There is no denying that we are a mechanized society that cannot function without lubricants. The dilemma is that oil is both necessary for our way of life and potentially destructive to nature. Quite simply, we must select innovative, efficient products that help solve our pollution problems.
Each year U.S. citizens dump more than 240,000,000 gallons of oil down sewers or into landfills. If you use petroleum oil and drain your oil every 3000 miles, you will use about 40 quarts of oil (over 25,000 miles) - enough to fill up a 10 gallon aquarium. By using AMSOIL you can cut that consumption down to almost nothing.
Are We Drowning In Oil?
The environmental issue is often framed in the language of behavior. Are we a selfish civilization whose quest for instant gratification trashes the natural world and leaves the mess for our children? It's an argument intended to provoke guilt. And we resist guilt. But consider this account by the New York Times, using as its source the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Petroleum Institute (API): "Each year, 1.2 billion gallons of lubricating oil are used in vehicles; 600 million gallons are burned up in engines, and 600 million gallons are removed at oil change time. Drivers who change their own oil account for 350 million of the removed gallons, and they improperly discard 240 million gallons of used oil." (New York Times, Oct. 28, 1989) Dumping 240 million gallons of oil is nearly the same as two Exxon Valdez spills each month. Improperly dumped waste oil seeps through landfills into ground water, disrupts bacterial digestion in sewer treatment plants (causing even more pollution), and washes into lakes and harbors. And we have no confident estimate of what happens to properly discarded waste oil. In 1989, there were only four re-refiners left in the U.S. They processed a total of only 50 million gallons of the 600 million gallons theoretically possible. (Hazmat World, Nov 1989) Are we drowning in waste oil? Drowning is, of course, overly dramatic. But do we have a serious problem? Are we trashing the world we leave our children? And most important, shouldn't we be doing something about it right now? Certainly. And the first thing we can do is not create so much waste oil to begin with...
How Dangerous Is Used Oil?
(For those not familiar with "parts per million", 1 million inches equals 83,333.33 feet or a little over 15 and 3/4 miles. 50 parts per million is equivalent to 4 feet 2 inches in that distance)
Where Does All The Oil Go?
Searching For the Right Answers...
What's to be done? An ocean of waste oil is being created every year and it's growing exponentially. The existing collection systems are not working and there's no guarantee new and more complicated schemes will work any better
Yet a very simple solution does exist. It all comes back to quality, innovation, efficiency, and problem solving.
Numbers and Solutions...
For more than a quarter of a century AMSOIL Incorporated has manufactured and distributed synthetic lubricants. It was the first synthetic motor oil qualified by the American Petroleum Institute, the first to recommend 25,000 mile / l year drain interval, and, today, the first and only to have a system for lifetime drain intervals (with oil analysis). Research, laboratory analysis, and millions of engine miles have produced a distinguished body of facts; decades of staying on top of the latest developments in the oil industry have paid off in maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste.
Most automotive experts recommend drain intervals of 3,000 to 6,000 miles for petroleum motor oils. This is about 4 to 8 times less than AMSOIL. Assuming you use petroleum oil travel 25.000 miles annually and have a 5-quart oil system, you will dump 15 to 35 quarts of used oil. You could almost fill up a 10-gallon aquarium with that much dirty oil for every 25,000 miles you drive. It's easy to see how the 25000 mile / l year drain intervals of AMSOIL can reduce your personal contribution to oil pollution. In 1985, AMSOIL introduced the TRIGARD System. This package of advanced automotive products represents the worlds first and only 100,000 mile plus oil change interval. And that means no wasted oil. If your car goes 100,000 miles on petroleum oil, and you follow the recommended drain intervals, you will generate between 85 and 165 quarts of waste oil. That's like draining from 1 1/2 to 2 bathtubs of dirty oil. With the AMSOIL TRIGARD System, you would generate little more than a milk-jug ful1 of used oil over 100,000 plus miles of use. That's economy, savings, and a conscionable ecological alternative!
Prevent Billions of Quarts From Being Dumped ...
Just think about what a savings on the environment it would be if, for example, the 135 million registered cars (excluding trucks, buses, and taxis) in the United States were equipped with AMSOIL. Assuming an average service life of 100,000 miles and an oil capacity of 5 quarts each, the cars in the United States will generate 11.4 billion to 22.3 billion quarts of waste petroleum oil in their service lifetimes (with regular changes every 3.000 to 6000 miles). If you put 22.3 billion quarts of waste oil into 55 gallon barrels and loaded them onto semi-trucks, you would have a line of trucks stretching end-to-end from Los Angles to Washington, D.C. and back to Los Angles again!
Using AMSOIL 100% Synthetic Motor Oil and the TRIGARD System, consumers can conserve our natural resources, preserve the environment, and save time, money, and repairs. Advanced technology and practical solutions are the answers to our technological problems. More than anyone in the field, AMSOIL is already part of the solution.
Other Ecological/Economical Benefits of AMSOIL
Reduces Emissions; Increases Engine Life
Of the 1.2 billion gallons of oil used each year, nearly 200 million gallons are burned and exit through the tailpipes of cars and trucks. Oil volatility is the measure of how susceptible an oil is to heat. The ACEA (Europe's main automotive regulatory committee) sets strict limits on how much oil can boil off. Any 10W-30 motor oil that experiences a 13% weight loss or more during the NOACK Volatility Test, fails to meet the ACEA's quality standards.
The table below shows the results of five oils that underwent the NOACK Volatility Test. 0f all these oils, only AMSOIL passes the NOACK Test; its volatility is three times less than some oils! As you can see, some oils a have weight losses in the 25% range - that means almost one-quarter of the oil boils away and is released into the environment. For most cars that's more than a quart of oil being burned and expelled into nature. (SLS Note: Since these tests were done in 1992, oils have been improved significantly through 2 upgrades to the API standards. Still, the majority of oils sold to the American public will not pass the NOACK test. So, if your car is using a quart of oil every 2 to 3,000 miles, maybe it's your oil, not your car!)
Boiled off "thicker" oil contributes to damaging deposits. sticky piston rings and oil blow-by, all of which cause reduced engine life, reduced oil and fuel economy and increased air pollution.
NOACK Volatility Test (DIN 51581) (April 1992 test results)
% Weight Loss - Above 13% = Failure
And you can do even more. A three month test using 17 vehicles of different age, mileage and size showed that hydrocarbon emissions were reduced by as much as 37% in vehicles given an application of AMSOIL Power foam. In vehicles using AMSOIL PI, hydrocarbons were reduced by as much as 78%
Greater Fuel Economy
The advanced lubricity (slipperiness) of AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants has been proven to increase fuel economy by 2-5 %. AMSOI L reduces friction and allows your engine to use its heat energy more efficiently. The superior lubricity has been reported to increase fuel economy by as much as 25%.
Reduces Solid Waste
In 1987, more than 895 million pounds of high density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles were used to package motor oil (and detergents and cleaners) (Automotive Marketing Magazine, November 1989) To put the packaging problem in perspective, if you put the 350 million gallons (API estimate, AAA World, Jan/Feb 1990) of motor oil used annually by DIYers only into quart bottles and lined them up side by side, you would have 1.4 billion bottles, enough bottles to make 31 rows that stretch from Los Angeles to New York!
With the extended drain intervals of AMSOIL, you can reduce the volume of waste bottles, jugs, and barrels by as much as eight times! That's as much as 784 million pounds of plastic saved; and that's more than 27 rows of bottles stretching from Los Angeles to New York being saved each year!
"Each Month, petroleum products emit the equivalent of an 'oil spill' into the Los Angeles Basin's air as massive as the 10 million gallon spill from the Exxon Valdez, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District." (Truckers News Magazine)
Worldwide Vehicle Population:
If, in the year 2000, these vehicles change oil 3 times each year and have 5 quart systems, 1 billion quarts of waste oil will be generated each month.
A Better Way
"I'm a person who is very badly scared. Almost all manufactured goods are causing pollution, and we're destroying rural America. But scattered all over are people who are doing good work, who are trying to find the better ways. "
- Wendell Barry, The Progressive
The goal in creating AMSOIL Synthetic Oil was to produce the best lubrication modern technology and human ingenuity could devise. Its successful formulation was achieved at precisely the moment when gasoline prices skyrocketed. The superior lubricating qualities of AMSOIL allowed engines to operate with less friction, thus extending fuel economy.
The goal in creating AMSOIL Air and Oil Filters was, again, to produce the best filtration systems possible using newly developed materials and newly acquired analytical knowledge. These filters arrived at the moment public consciousness focused on the deteriorating effects of smog and dust-choked air on both humans and machines.
The life of a lubricant is tied to a system's ability to keep it clean. AMSOIL increased that ability by increasing the filtering capacity with its "depth-type' oil filter. Then, with an extraordinary leap in filter technology, AMSOIL introduced the By-Pass Oil Filter. While again substantially increasing the overall capacity of an engine's filtration system, this "second filter" could remove contaminants 25 times smaller than conventional filters.
With the introduction of periodic oil analysis AMSOIL completed what could be the ultimate step in engine protection. It's called TRIGARD, and it links state-of-the-art filtration with a nearly indestructible, synthetic oil and periodic oil analysis. TRIGARD means the life of the lubricant is extended to virtually the life of the vehicle: one oil fill that can last 100,000 miles or more.
At exactly the moment the world can no longer afford a throw-away oil, the AMSOIL TRIGARD System points the way back to savings. It saves time and money on oil changes; saves expensive engines by the most advanced protection system yet devised; and it contributes to saving the environment by nearly eliminating waste oil.
As the world moves bravely through the environmental 90s, it will be long-standing quality products like these that will reduce the world's burden of waste and pollution.

"We did not inherit the Earth from our parents,
we are merely its keepers for our children."
Amish proverb
AMSOIL was founded in 1972 and pioneered the synthetics industry by introducing several "world-firsts" in lubrication and filtration. Today, AMSOIL manufactures the largest line of synthetic products in the world, and distributes them through a worldwide network of independent dealers.
In an industry dominated by corporate giants, AMSOIL has no illusions about what it must do in order to survive: it must stay ahead of the competition and offer consumers a significantly better product. Ironically, due to our relatively small size and unique marketing structure, we are able to get advanced technology products to you years (and sometimes decades) ahead of the competition, and funnel our resources into quality, not marketing and glitz.
After more than two decades, AMSOIL still leads the way in advanced lubricants and filters, and will continue to do so into the new millenium.
