The titles below are all click-able. The
links lead you to more detail on each story. Each collection is listed
in the
chronological broadcast order of the stories.
These are the first and last stories of the entire TV series.
An Unearthly Child starring William Hartnell (the first story) 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Survival starring Sylvester McCoy (the last regular story) 3 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Survival was the last story of the
regular BBC series, but the true last story is now Doctor Who (the TV
Movie)
which was co-produced by Universal, the
Fox television network, and the BBC in 1996. Due to rights issues,
this is
unlikely to ever have a video release
in North America.
These are all the stories were the Doctor regenerated
into a new body. They are consequently also usually the first or
last stories for each actor to have played the
part.
The Tenth Planet starring William Hartnell (the first regeneration) 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95 Coming out May 8.
The Power of the Daleks starring Patrick
Troughton (the aftermath of the first regeneration -
this is one of the stories
missing from the BBC Archives and is consequently not available on video.
A few clips have survived,
however, and these can be found on the special video The
Missing Years,
sold in a box set with The
Edge of Destruction for $19.92)
The War Games starring Patrick Troughton (the second regeneration) 10 episodes, 2 tapes, $19.92
Spearhead
From Space starring Jon Pertwee (the aftermath of the second regeneration)
90 min. movie form, 1, $12.95 on VHS.
Also now available on DVD
in 4-episode form with lots of extras for $24.95.
Planet of the Spiders starring Jon Pertwee (the third regeneration) 6 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Robot starring Tom Baker (the aftermath of the third regeneration) 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Logopolis starring Tom Baker (the fourth regeneration) 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Castrovalva starring Peter Davison (the aftermath of the fourth regeneration) 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Caves
of Androzani starring Peter Davison (the fifth regeneration)
4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Also now available on DVD
in episode form with lots of extras for $24.95.
The Twin Dilemma starring Colin Baker (the aftermath of the fifth regeneration) 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Time and the Rani starring Sylvester McCoy (the sixth regeneration and it's aftermath) 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Doctor Who (the TV Movie) starring Paul
McGann (the seventh regeneration and it's aftermath - due to rights issues
between it's three producers,
this is unlikely to ever have a video release in North America)
Colin Baker was dismissed between seasons and
never got to have a proper goodbye story. His last story was the
14-part The
Trial of a Time Lord but it has nothing at all to do with his Doctor's
imminent regeneration.
Sylvester McCoy's last full TV story was the last
one of the series, Survival, until his
appearance for the first 20
minutes of the 1996 Doctor Who TV Movie when
his Doctor regenerated into Paul McGann's.
The Doctor has crossed his own time-stream to
meet some of his other incarnations on three occasions in the TV series.
These are the stories where this happened.
The Three Doctors starring Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton, and William Hartnell. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The
Five Doctors starring Peter Davison, Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton,
Richard Hurndall, Tom Baker, and
William Hartnell. 100
minute collector's edition movie form, sold with The King's Demons
2 tapes, $19.92
Also now available on it's
own on DVD for $24.95 with some extras.
The Two Doctors
starring Colin Baker and Patrick Troughton. 3 45-minute episodes,
1 tape, $12.95.
These are the stories that took place for the most part on the Doctor's home planet of Gallifrey.
The Deadly
Assassin starring Tom Baker (first
all-Gallifrey story, introduces much of the Time Lord government and
mythos, and the Matrix, the
Time Lords' repository of all knowledge wherein the Doctor fights a mental
virtual reality
battle with Keanu Reeves...
oh sorry, I mean the Master's henchman) 90 minute movie form,
1 tape, $12.95
The Invasion
of Time starring Tom Baker (the Doctor becomes the President of
the Time Lords following a situation
left unresolved in The
Deadly Assassin). 6 episodes, 2 tapes, $19.92
Arc of Infinity
starring Peter Davison (the Time Lords feel they must execute the
Doctor to save the universe).
4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The
Five Doctors starring Peter Davison, Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton,
Richard Hurndall, Tom Baker, and
William Hartnell (the
20th anniversary story that takes place in the Death Zone on Gallifrey)
100 minutes, 1 DVD, $24.95
or a VHS release (with The King's Demons) on 2 tapes for $19.92.
Also, most of the tenth episode of the Patrick
Troughton story The War Games (10
episodes, 1 tape, $19.92) takes place
on Gallifrey and was in fact the series' first
look at it. There is also a glimpse of Gallifrey at the start of
the as-yet-unreleased
story Colony in Space, and similar but
more extensive scenes in The Three Doctors
(4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95) as the
Time Lord government frets over events and brings
the two previous Doctors into the present time of the third to help with
the situation.
Also, the trial sequences of The
Trial of a Time Lord (14 episodes, 3 tapes, $34.92) take place
on board a Gallifreyan
space station, and another virtual reality battle
inside the Matrix is fought in the final two episodes.
Most Doctor Who stories are contained within themselves,
with few connections to the previous stories. On a few
occasions, however, there have been character
or story arcs flowing through several consecutive stories. Here's
a list
of those arcs:
Many consider the first three stories of the series
to be a strong character arc as the Doctor and Susan take Ian and
Barbara away into time and space. The characters
start out with a frisson that doesn't really calm down until the end
of the third story. These are:
An Unearthly Child starring William Hartnell 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Daleks starring William Hartnell 7 episodes, 2 tapes, $19.92
The Edge
of Destruction starring William Hartnell 2 episodes, sold
in a two-tape set that also contains the unused
pilot version of the first
episode of An Unearthly Child where you can see how the characters
were first set up with
even more hostility.
The set also includes the special video The Missing Years.
2 tapes, $19.92
The Doctor's Exile / UNIT - Story Arc
At the end of the Second Doctor's era, in The
War Games, the Doctor was captured by the Time Lords, found guilty
of
interfering in the affairs of other peoples and
planets, but given a lenient sentence where he was exiled to 20th century
Earth.
Once there he became the Scientific Advier to
the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT), a paramilitary organization
set up to deal with new and deadly threats to
mankind, like alien invasions and mad scientists. UNIT was first
seen in the
Second Doctor 8-part story The
Invasion, and the Doctor had first met it's commanding officer,
Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
in the now-mostly-missing story The Web of
Fear (though he was only a colonel then). On certain occasions during
the exile,
the Time Lords would also send the Doctor
on a mission for them to some other planet and time. His exile is fully
lifted just over
three seasons later in The
Three Doctors. All of the stories between The
War Games and The Three Doctors
are part of this
story arc, though some deal with the exile more
directly than others. Following his exile, the Doctor would continue
to pay visits
to his UNIT friends until a little while after
his third regeneration, where he gradually began to stay away. The
last regular
appearance of UNIT troops was in The
Seeds of Doom, however the full UNIT arc really ends at about the
point he leaves
Sarah Jane Smith, whom he'd met while at UNIT,
back on Earth in The Hand of Fear and
heads home to Gallifrey for
The Deadly
Assassin.
UNIT's commanding officer, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart,
would return after having retired in the Fifth Doctor story
Mawdryn Undeadand
again in The Five Doctors.
He returns briefly to active service at the head of UNIT for the
Seventh Doctor story Battlefield.
The Master's Dalek Plan - Story Arc
Two stories in the middle of the 10th season were
linked together to form a 12-part epic tale of rising unrest between
Earth's space empire and that of rival power
Draconia. Both sides are being manipulated by the Master, as seen
in
Frontier in
Space, who in turn is working for the Daleks, who appear at the
end of Frontier and whom the Doctor
then pursues in the following story Planet
of the Daleks. Both stories star Jon Pertwee, are 6 episodes
long, and
are priced at $19.92.
As soon as his exile to Earth was lifted, the
Third Doctor's first attempted port of call for himself and Jo in the TARDIS
was a famous blue planet in the Acteon Group
called Metebelis Three. He tried and failed to reach it in Carnival
of
Monsters.
In The Green Death,
three stories later, he takes drastic measures and hard-wires the co-ordinates
of Metebelis Three
into the TARDIS' cooridinate programmer and successfully
reaches the planet. He doesn't stay long, as it's a much more
hostile place than he remembers, but whilst there
he does nab a fantasic blue crystal that has strange healing powers for
the mind of anyone who stares into it for any
length of time. It becomes crucial to the events of the rest of the story
(set
on Earth), and at the end of the story, he presents
it to Jo as a wedding present.
In Planet
of the Spiders, she returns the crystal to him, just in time for
it to be hunted by future inhabitants of Metebelis
Three: psychic giant spiders. The tussle
over the crystal and it's power takes the Doctor back to that world, and
ultimately leads to the end of his third life...
Space Station Nerva - Story Arc
Most of the stories in Tom Baker's first season were connected to a single human space station, known as Nerva.
In The Ark in
Space (90 minute movie form, 1 tape, $12.95), the TARDIS materializes
on board space station Nerva
in the far future, when it serves as a cryogenic
repository for a group of survival sleepers who went into hibernation to
wait out solar flares that devastated all life
on Earth. At the end of the story, the Doctor, Sarah, and Harry use
a transmat
beam to travel to the devastated but now regenerated
Earth.... this leads directly into...
The
Sontaran Experiment, a 2-part story.
At the conclusion of this, the travellers use the transmat again to return
to
Nerva and where they left the TARDIS, but in
transit their transmat is intercepted by the Time Lords, who send the
Doctor on a special mission back in time, to
attempt to avert the creation of the Daleks on Skaro in the 6-part story,
Genesis
of the Daleks. The two stories are sold together in a box
set on 2 tapes for $19.92.
At the conclusion of that story, the travellers
use a Time Ring given to them by the Time Lords to return to Nerva, but
it takes them to an earlier point in it's history
than when they left it in the 4-part story, Revenge
of the Cybermen
(90 minute movie form, 1 tape, $12.95).
The TARDIS catches up with them at the end, bringing with it an emergency
message from Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart back
on 20th century Earth that they are needed there. This takes us to...
Terror of
the Zygons (4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95), but that's another non-Nerva-related
story.
The six stories comprising the 16th season of
the series saw Tom Baker's Doctor searching the universe for the scattered
segments of the Key to Time, one segment per
story. He was sent on this quest at the behest of the White Guardian
in
order to restore the balance of the universe,
and told to watch out for the Black Guardian, who wishes to possess the
key to destroy that balance. The six stories
are:
The Ribos Operation starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Pirate Planet starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Stones of Blood starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Androids of Tara starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Power of Kroll starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Armageddon Factor starring Tom Baker. 6 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
This entire season is now due for DVD release in a box set late in 2002.
The E-Space Trilogy - Story Arc
These three stories in the middle of Tom Baker's
final season saw the TARDIS flying through a rare portal into another
universe called E-Space and becoming trapped
there. They also introduce a new companion, Adric and write out Romana
and K9. These three stories are sold together
as The E-Space Trilogy, 3 stories
at 4 episodes each, 3 tapes, $34.92
The stories are titled Full Circle, State
of Decay, and Warriors' Gate.
The Master Trilogy - Story and Character Arc
These three stories involve the reintroduction
of the Master to the series via his own regeneration and his involvement
with the Doctor's fourth regeneration.
They also see the introduction of two new companions, Nyssa and Tegan.
The Keeper of Traken starring Tom Baker 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Logopolis starring Tom Baker 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Castrovalva
starring Peter Davison 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Black Guardian Trilogy - Story and Character Arc
These three stories involve the return of the
Black Guardian from the Key to Time arc, seeking his long-promised
revenge against the Doctor by recruiting a young
man named Turlough to his cause who infiltrates the TARDIS crew
as a new companion.
Mawdryn Undead starring Peter Davison. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Terminus starring Peter Davison. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Enlightenment
starring Peter Davison. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Trial of a Time Lord - Story Arc
The entirety of the 14-episode 23rd season of
the series was dubbed The Trial of a Time Lord, which saw the
Doctor placed on trial again by the Time Lords
for interfering in the affairs of other peoples and planets. It consisted
of three "evidentiary" stories where entire adventures
of the Doctor's were played into the court. Each of these lasted
4 episodes. The final 2 episodes of the
season concluded the trial itself. The entire season is sold together
as
The Trial
of a Time Lord starring Colin Baker, 14 episodes, 3 tapes, $34.92
Also, a loveable con-man character named Sabalom
Glitz was introduced in this story, and he made a return visit
to the series in the otherwise non-trial related
story Dragonfire starring Sylvester
McCoy, 3 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Ace Trilogy - Character Arc
Three of the four stories of the final season
of the series, the 26th, dealt in much greater detail than usual with the
stormy,
dysfunctional past of the Doctor's companion
Ace, a tough-nosed 80s urban teenager. These three stories were:
Ghost Light starring Sylvester McCoy, 3 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Curse of Fenric starring Sylvester McCoy, 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Survival starring Sylvester McCoy, 3 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Fenric in particular deals with these issues,
resolving some unanswered questions from her debut story, Dragonfire.
These are all the stories to feature the Daleks,
the most ruthless and resilient creatures in the series' history, bent
on
exterminating all that is not Dalek...
The Daleks starring William Hartnell (their debut story) 7 episodes, 2 tapes, $19.92

THE DOCTOR WHO WORK OF THE LATE DOUGLAS ADAMS
In memory and tribute of world-famous Hitch
Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams, who died suddenly
of a heart attack on May 11, 2001, I thought
it would add a list of Douglas' script-writing work on Doctor Who
to this
section...
Douglas Adams was the single credited writer on the following two stories...
The Pirate Planet starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95 and
Shada starring Tom Baker. 6 uncompleted episodes bridged with narration from Tom Baker. 1 tape, $12.95.
He was also the co-writer of the following story
with Producer Graham Williams based on ideas by David Fisher
under the pen name David Agnew:
City of Death starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
Douglas Adams was also the Script Editor during
the series' 17th season, meaning he was in effect the head writer,
working with the freelance writers and directing
changes and performing rewrites. The stories in the 17th season were...
Destiny of the Daleks starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
the aforementioned City of Death
The Creature from the Pit starring Tom Baker... not yet released on video.
Nightmare of Eden starring Tom Baker. 4 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95
The Horns of Nimon starring Tom Baker... not yet released on video.
and the aforementioned uncompleted story Shada.
Douglas also performed some rewrites on the last
story of season 16, The Armageddon
Factor, 6 episodes, 1 tape, $12.95.
