Evacuation of Spanish Main Yacht Club

Evacuation Procedure:

Evacuation is accomplished by establishing “neighborhood groups, and leaders for each group.  These

neighborhood groups are updated before the hurricane season.  The Captain in each group will listen,

read and watch for hurricane evacuation orders.  When directed to leave the island, the Captain will call their

group, and assist those who need assistance. The Captain will advise the location of public shelters and

encourage evacuees to seek out shelter wherever they desire.

Longboat Key Mandatory Evacuation Order:

When the Town issues a MANDATORY Evacuation order.  All those who intend to leave, should do so in an

orderly manner, and be prepared to take whatever valuables they intend to take with them.  MANDATORY will

not force those who wish to stay to evacuate.  IT WILL subject those who refuse, to arrest, if they are seen on

the island anywhere. This includes walking and / or riding.  Those staying will NOT have access to emergency

medical help until it is approved by the city officials. Any person who wishes to remain on the Key after

evacuation has been ordered, will be asked to give the Police Dept. the name of their next of kin.

Leaders will:

      1)   Contact all residents in their neighborhood group to make sure they are aware of the Evacuation Order.

      2)   Assist or arrange for assistance for those residents who otherwise might be unable to leave the island.

In the event the group leader is not in residence when an evacuation order is issued, the group leader must notify

one of the co-chairs so that a new temporary group leader can be named.

Owner Responsibility

Before the storm, owners should decide where they will go when they evacuate.  Evacuation maps and shelters

are printed in the Sarasota and Bradenton phone books and copies are available at the Police Dept., Fire Dept.,

Town Hall and Public Works Dept. on Longboat Key.  Check the SMYC Web site:

Evacuation Route and Shelter Locations in Bradenton

When under a Storm Warning / Watch or Evacuation notice, all loose items at an owner’s villa or boat must be

properly secured (able to withstand 150 M.P.H. winds).  This would include hanging baskets, chairs, tables,

bicycles, potted plants, grills, fishing equipment, boating equipment, etc.
