About Pilates

What is Pilates you ask?

As I indicated on my home page, I define Pilates as a fun way to get in shape and feel energized. Joseph Pilates doing a Roll Over The "experts" will tell you that Pilates is an innovative system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates. Okay … what's that mean?

Pilates exercise is a way to elongate and strengthen the body. Most of you are familiar with a more conventional manner of exercise - death by repetition. You end up sore, fatigued and more prone to injury. Pilates is different, as it was developed from the rehabilitation techniques of Joseph Pilates. Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise system using a floor mat or equipment, that will help you look and feel your very best. No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you.

If you've never tried Pilates, it often looks very easy to do - much like Yoga to the casual observer. However since Pilates concentrates on your core (the center of your body includes deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine), you often don't feel the exercises unless you are holding proper position and technique. One of my teaching motto's is "Pilates … it's easy, until you do the exercise correctly".

Done properly Pilates can dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen.

Who does Pilates? It may surprise you to know how many people have made Pilates a major part of their lives. Professional dancers practice it to hone their skills of positioning and grace. Athletes often turn to Pilates to increase flexibility and prevent injury. And it only takes a glance at a grocery store tabloid to see how Hollywood's embraced this form of exercise. Is it for you? Only you can answer that, but I'm willing to assist you in finding out. Contact me for a personal consultation.
