Rug Number: T103
Size: 64 inches x 31 inches.
Description: Classical Tibetan throne rug with blue k'iu lung dragons on a golden yellow field. This type of rug was made to be placed on a lama's chair with a square seat and a rounded back. Click here to view a photo of this type of chair. On the "back", three dragons in the field, with the eight Buddhist symbols (in the top and side borders), and "waves, clouds, and mountains" lower border. On the "seat", 5 dragons in the field with "waves, clouds, and mountains" border. This rug is in excellent condition and has just been washed. The pile is short and even, with some slight wear on the "back". The handle is "floppy", and there is some abrash in the field (most of the "back" is a different shade of yellow than the "seat"). There are a number of newer copies of this centuries-old design on the market (see Rug T326 on Tibetan Rugs Page 2), but the slight wear, colors, and skillfullness of the weaver suggest that this rug was made before the Cultural Revolution in China, when religious motifs were "socially unacceptable" and some of the traditional skills were lost. No dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T106 (pair)
Size: 58 x 30 inches (right), 57 x 30 inches (left)
Description: Pair of pillar (or wall) rugs. On each, a blue k'iu lung dragon, a "pearl of great wisdom" and a Buddhist urn in a golden yellow field, pearls and pendants at the top, and "waves, clouds, mountains" lower border. Note the scales on the left hand dragon are oval, and on the right hand dragon, rectangular. These rugs were probably part of the same order, woven by two different weavers using wool from the same dye lots. These rugs have just been washed and are in excellent condition. The pile is soft, medium length and even, and the handle is "floppy". There is little abrash, and no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$800.00 for the pair plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T108
Size: 49 x 31 inches
Description: Tiger in landscape. This rug is in excellent condition. The tiger is well drawn in a balanced composition. The pile is short and even, the handle is "floppy", there is some abrash visible in the photo, and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.

Rug Number: T110
Size: 62 x 34-1/2 to 36 inches
Description: Blue and white flower pattern rug, with pearl inner border and running thunderline outer border. The light and dark indigo blues are reminiscent of 19th century Suiyuan rugs. Unlike most 19th century rugs, however, this rug is in excellent condition. The pile is soft, medium length and even, and the handle is "floppy". There is little abrash, and no dye runs. This rug has a slight taper from 36 inches wide at one end to 34-1/2 inches wide at the other end. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T116
Size: 54 x 30-1/2 inches
Description: Chinese "shou" (long life) characters with peonies and fretwork medallion and corners in the blue field, and running thunderline border. This type of rug was often commissioned by a family to celebrate a man's 60th birthday. This rug is very clean and is in excellent condition. The pile is soft, medium length and even, and the handle is "floppy". There are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$245.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T118
Size: 62 x 32 inches
Description: 'Wu fu peng shou' rug, with medallions of five bats and red "shou" characters in the field, and running thunderline border. 'Wu fu peng shou' translates literally as 'five bats lift up longevity'. In Chinese symbolism and art motifs, the shou character represents "good wishes", and the five bats represent the five great Chinese blessings: happiness, wealth, peace, virtue, and longevity. This rug is clean and in excellent condition, with full pile and intact borders and selvedges. The 60-line warp (60 pairs of warp threads per foot) and double weft are cotton. The long staple Tibetan wool pile is medium length and even, the handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. The style, workmanship, colors and condition of this rug suggest it was woven in the mid-20th century. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$175.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T120
Size: 60 x 32 inches
Description: Clouds pattern rug. From the presence of loose hair in the pile, I speculate that this rug was recently made. It has just been washed and is in good condition. There are faint orange dye runs, visible in the photo, on the tips of the pile in some areas of the field. I have left it alone and reduced the price. Goat or yak hair wefts. The pile is unusually long and luxurious, and the handle is "floppy". Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$175.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T124
Size: 59 x 31-1/2 inches
Description: Two dragons rug. Probably recent production. Two dragons with green and yellow scales pursue the "pearl of wisom and truth" in a blue field with clouds. Running thunder border. This rug is clean and is in excellent condition. The pile is medium, and the handle is "floppy". No dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T128
Size: 33 x 58 inches, 33x60 inches
Description: A pair of classical Tibetan lotus flower rugs with five red and five light blue flowers alternating on a dark blue field. The flowers are well-drawn and each row is slightly offset to accomodate the meandering vine that ties everything together in a graceful overall composition. Both rugs are clean and in excellent condition, with no signs of wear, no end loss, and completely intact original selvedges. The pile is shiny, medium length and even, and the handle is "floppy". The colors are good, and there are no dye runs. If you have trouble getting out of bed on those cold winter mornings, put one of these rugs on each side of your bed and your feet will land on a warm rug rather than a cold floor. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$500.00 for the pair plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T132
Size: 56 x 32 inches
Description: A classical Tibetan tiger skin rug with color stripe end borders, and a bit of wear on it. This rug shows signs of use where the pile in the lower right portion of the photo is worn more than the rest of the pile, but the wear is compatible with the age and overall condition of the rug, and the selvedges and ends are intact. The handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T134
Size: 58 x 31 inches
Description: This pattern is open to interpretation: "field of flowers", "red and gold pearls", or "stylized double dorje" with pearl and running thunderline border. The pile is medium length and even, the handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T135
Size: 59 x 30 inches
Description: Two-tone (red/yellow, light yellow/dark yellow) four-petal flowers on a diagonal lattice, with pearl and two-tone running thunderline border on a dark blue field. This rug conveys a sense of straightforward simplicity that is the hallmark of antique rugs from this part of the world. According to H. A. Lorentz, the raindrop shape in two colors Stupa Link is frequently used to represent a stupa. Stupas are Buddhist monuments that are built in memory of a saintly individual. It would come as no surprise to those who study Tibetan Buddhism that stupas would deliberately be shown as flower petals to represent each individual's contribution to the process of continuing the search for enlightenment. This rug is clean and in excellent condition, with full pile and intact borders and selvedges. The 60-line warp (60 pairs of warp threads per foot) and double weft are cotton. The long staple Tibetan wool pile is medium length and even, the handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T136
Size: 67 x 32 inches
Description: Pillar rug with yellow k'iu lung dragon (with subtle scales) in pursuit of the "pearl of wisdom and truth", with another "pearl" nearby, on a dark blue field with Tibetan Buddhist symbols "endless knots, conch shell, and urn" below an upper border of "string of colored pearls with pendants" at the top and "waves, clouds, and mountains" lower border. This rug is clean, the pile is medium length and even, the handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.

Rug Number: T138
Size: 56 x 29 inches

Rug Number: T142

Price: US$325.00 plus shipping and insurance.
Rug Number: T148
Size: 53 x 31 inches
Description: Dragons rug. Fancifully described as "two dragons play ball". On a more esoteric level, a red "earth dragon" and a blue "sky dragon" pursue the "pearl of great wisdom and truth", representing mankind's struggle on earth to reach a state of enlightenment and escape the cycle of recurrence represented by the Buddhist symbol "endless knots". Running thunderline border. The pile is medium length and even, the handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
Price: US$225.00 plus shipping and insurance.

Rug Number: T172
Size: 53 x 31-1/2 inches
Description: Tibetan "good luck" symbols rug. The symbolism behind this pattern is obscure, although the Turkoman three-fingered talisman for protection and Chinese character + (for the number ten or "completion") are easily recognizable. Lightning zigzag border. This rug has just been washed. The pile is medium length and even, the handle is "floppy", and there are no dye runs. Country of origin: Tibet.
