2009 Patapsco Valley State Park Thanksgiving Feast at Soldiers Delight, December 3, 2009
by Lynell Tobler

Every year, Patapsco Valley State Park manager Robin Melton hosts a Thanksgiving feast in early December to honor and thank all the employees and volunteers who staff the parks and natural environment areas which comprise the Patapsco Valley State Park (PVSP) system. For the past two years the luncheon has been held in the auditorium at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area.

This feast of fellowship is "potluck," so PVSP provides the turkeys and drinks, and guests are asked to bring a dish to share for about 50 people. Last year guests were also asked to bring a box or can of non-perishable food for charity. This year guests were asked to choose something from a list of sundry items provided by "Marine Moms," who assemble gift baskets of toiletries and other items for armed service members serving overseas.

Four turkeys were roasted for the luncheon this year, held on Thursday, December 3 at high noon. Tables groaned under the weight of goodies brought by happy (and hungry) PVSP staff members and volunteers. And the table holding toiletries for military service personnel was literally overflowing. A wonderful time was had by all.

Morgan and Melody Await The Feast
Morgan Hedges, animal care
specialist, and Melody Nevins,
naturalist, both work at
Soldiers Delight, taking care of
the animals in the Scales &
Tales program which is housed
at SDNEA. Here, they survey
the bounty set before them.

Lori Wicher and The Feast
Lori Wicher helps organize the
PVSP Thanksgiving feast every
year. Lori made sure everyone
had a wonderful variety of
foods to choose from and
plenty of turkey.
