Industrial Waste Heat Recovery Project at Drexel University:
In 1976, I took sabbatical leave from my faculty position at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and joined Drexel University
as a Visiting Research Professor. I worked as the anchor person on the
Industrial Waste Heat Recovery Project. Working closely with and under the
direction of the two professors (Dr. Harry Brown, and Dr. Bernie Hammel) who were the Principal Investigators (PIs) for the US Department
of Energy (DOE) project, I put a team together to execute the project. I worked
with several subcontractors and consultants with expert knowledge of the
industrial sector. I had several graduate and undergraduate students working
with me on collecting data and information. I organized the project so that
people from various organizations contributed the most that they could at an
affordable cost. In less than twelve months, we were able to develop a premier
industrial energy database for the US. Impressed by the results of
that study, the US
DOE gave a multi-million dollar follow-on contract to Drexel to develop a
comprehensive database.
