City's Child

The twitching blood flows
down the tire-worn street.
Climbing the peeling steps
up to the asphalt grass,
my view grabs the bluest sky.

Heart beats flicker in time
with the throbbing fan.
Breathing comes slower
with each step to the edge.

Noises of the city
break the sound barrier.
Closing every mindful door,
I smile as the birds dive
and flee to find a safety nest.

The musical breeze pushes my hair
to a lively, soft-rock tune
as I watch humanity
stroll to a deadly beat.

Sadly I stare into gunshot eyes
shocked to find
they are only children.
