Dad, Did I Ever Tell You?
Dad, did I ever tell you
how much you mean to me?
I remember everything
even the wrinkle around your eye
when the summer heat would sizzle
any daring cloud floating by.
I wondered how you did it
since your office was outside
laying-out sheets of metal
for ships, where eggs often fried.
Your clothes soaked and dripping wet
were hung in the basement to dry.
The heavy drenched work boots sat
awaiting a kinder April sky.
I recall your mangled finger
smashed by a metal window.
Although the finger finally healed,
the nail would never show.
The used bike with chrome fenders
bound with a red velvet bow,
spoke proudly of your love for me
next to the Christmas tree aglow.
Your secret mix of special soil
was voted the best in town.
To friends and family alike,
the recipe you handed down.
Often you would fill my mind
with secret words of wisdom
as I questioned all you tried
and listed each addendum.
Never once did I know hunger
or lack a heated home.
You gave us peace and happiness
and the chance to laugh and roam.
Would night miss each flickering star?
Could I breathe but never be?
You're the brilliance of every sun
your love, each wave upon the sea!
Now as you lay upon the bed
"I love you", was said bold and clear
then whispered softly again
to smile within your ear!
Dad, let me tell you again
you mean all this and more to me!
