Q. How often should my septic system be serviced?

A. Your system should be maintained every 2-3 years depending on how the system is used. Additionally, if you are planning on selling your home, a full inspection should be conducted to insure the system is fully functional.

Q. What will happen if I don’t properly maintain my septic system?

A. Nothing good. Eventually all the sludge will eventually rise to the level of the outlet pipe and start to filter out into the leaching field. This will create an expensive, smelly, and potentially hazardous spill onto your property. Proper maintenance will save you money and preserve your landscaping.

Q. How will I know if my system is in need of repair?

A. An early sign of failure is odor. A system that is functioning properly will be totally odorless. Toilets running slower than normal or backing up may also indicate a problem.

Q. How long will I have to wait before I can use my plumbing again?

A. The answer varies depending upon the type of work your system needs. Typically you should be able to resume normal usage the same day you receive service.

Q. I have heard that I should not dispose of certain materials using the septic system. What are those things?

A. The following substances should not be put in the septic system: cooking greases and oils, pesticides, paints, paint thinners, solvents, disinfectants, and other household chemicals. Some household products are toxic and may affect the quality of the groundwater.

Q. Should my family use a special type of bathroom tissue?

A. Most toilet papers on the market are created to break down very easily. You do not need to purchase special bathroom tissue. Be aware that facial tissues and paper towels are not designed to break down easily and should be disposed on in the trash, not the toilet.

Q. How long can I expect a properly maintained system to last?

A. The answer depends on many criteria. However with proper maintenance a system can last many, many years.

Q. How much do you charge for a consultation?

A. When you call Soucy’s Sewer we will provide you with a FREE consultation and estimate. You are under absolutely no obligation.
