The colors
The following pages, one for each basic
color name in the English language, (plus beige was added) contain tidbits of
basic information about each of these colors. I explore the conscious and
unconscious symbolism and impressions as well as include a little about some
of the synesthetic effects of some colors. (Synaesthesia is a kind of mixing
of sensory input. Smelling and/or tasting colors would be an example)
Sometimes I’ve added some information about the color in a context of
architecture, marketing and advertising, history, or just general
impressions.
Color, above all, must have a context.
There are no 'bad' or 'ugly' colors. There can be unattractive color
combinations though. A single color can change the overall impression just by
changing the surrounding colors. For example, bright yellow on it's own is
considered a happy, sunny color. But combine it with black and it signifies
'caution'. Combine yellow with light green and it evokes spring foliage or
tangy citrus flavors. Combine yellow with turquoise and pale beige and it reminds
us of tropical escapes with warm water and white sand. Or add burnt orange
and warm brown to yellow and it reminds us of the turning leaves of autumn.
