These instructions are for customizing a larger POI that will show up, for example, in the
recently travelled menu of the TomTom.  This icon is NOT the custom icon that will show up
on the Map or next to the POI in the POI list.  For that icon, you need to follow the instructions below:
>>>  Custom POI Icon For Map and POI List <<<

If you do not create this larger, higher resolution icon, the TomTom will simply take your custom
POI icon (or the built-in TomTom icon you selected) and enlarge that icon by stretching it.  This,
of course, can result in an image that looks distorted or grainy.
Below is an example of this stretching.

Here is what the icon looks like when following the instructions I describe on this page:

NOTE:  To understand how I'm seeing this screen with this icon, you need to follow these instructions:

This higher resolution icon is ALSO used for the POI alert image notification.  Whenever you set an alert for this custom POI,
the TomTom will automatically flash this icon in the upper left corner of the screen when you are near your POI.
Here is an example when the lower resolution icon is stretched for this alert:

Here is what it looks like when you create the higher resolution icon:

To learn how to set a POI warning, refer to the 'Points of Interest' --> 'How Can I Set Warnings for POIs?'
section of the TomTom Owner's manual below:
>>> TomTom Owner's Manual <<<

1.  Follow your owner's manual instructions for creating a POI Category.

2.  The Category you created in step #1 shows up as two files on your TomTom:
            a) The *.ov2 file is the actual POI Category file  (for example:  Cool_place.ov2)
            b) The *.bmp file is the icon attached to the POI Category   (for example:  Cool_place.bmp)
            c)  The *_X2.bmp file is the icon for the recently visited locations  (for example:
Cool_place_X2.bmp)

NOTE:  These files are found in the specific map folder in which you are using at the time of the POI creation.
In my example, I am using the USA and Canada maps.  Therefore, my *.ov2 and *.bmp file are located here:
                        /TomTom (K:)/USA_and_Canada/Cool_place.ov2
                        /TomTom (K:)/USA_and_Canada/Cool_place.bmp
                        /TomTom (K:)/USA_and_Candada/Cool_place_X2.bmp

3.  Use a larger version of the icon you used for your POI Category.  I found the following icon on the web:

4.  Using your favorite image editing software, resize and save the image using the following specifications:

            a) 44 x44 pixels
            b) Windows bitmap (*.bmp)
            c) Filename = <POI Category>_X2.bmp
(note: the TomTom is case sensitive, so insure the name is exactly the same as the category name
with the _X2 extension:  For example:  Cool_place_X2.bmp)

5.  Plug in your TomTom to your PC

6.  Turn on your TomTom

7.  Using Windows Explorer, find your TomTom device (it will have the little red TomTom icon next to it: )

8.  Click the little "+" sign next to the TomTom icon to expand the folders:

9.   Copy the *.bmp file from step #4 into the map folder in which you created the POI.
        - In my example, it is the USA_and_Canada folder

10.  On your windows lower right icon task menu, click on the safely remove hardware icon:

11.  When Windows states it is safe to remove your hardware, disconnect your TomTom from your PC.

12.  Now whenever you review a recently visited location, your icon will appear as a menu selection in high resolution:
