1st Regiment Illinois Light Artillery
De Gress’ Battery
June-July 2007
Next Meeting
(To be announced) August 2007
7:30 PM
Whitehall
Court, Buffalo Grove, Ill
The
next scheduled meeting will be in August at the Home of Adjutant Brown. Please
mark your calendars.
Fourth of July
Parades
The
Battery will be marching in two Independence
Day Parades this July 4th. The first being the Arlington Heights
parade and the second being the Mount Prospect
parade. We ask that all those that can attend please do so. Wear your “Dress”
uniform. Dress Uniform being your best and cleanest looking uniform. Please
wear your Kepies. The long term weather report is for
temperatures in the 90’s. Bring plenty of water. If temperatures get too high
we will strip down to vests or just shirts. There will be a gap between parades
for us to rest.
ARLINGTON PARADE:
Also known as the Frontier Days Festival. The theme is “Read a Good Book
Lately”. Set up time is 8:30 with the step off time at 10AM sharp. Be warned
that roads in the area will start to be closed around 8:45. There will be
plenty of parking in the St Peter’s Church lot on Olive west of Arlington Heights road. The Battery
was given number 47. Park in the church lot and walk to our
location.
MOUNT PROSPECT:
Their theme is “ Mount Prospect…Celebrating
90 years and still growing strong.” This is a longer parade distance wise. Set
up will be 12:15 in the area of Mount Prospect
and Council. If you march in the Arlington Heights
parade, you can jump on the trailer and ride to the start up location. You will
then be able to get a lift back to the St Peter’s church and your car. The Battery will be Number 82 in this parade.
Remember
this is the main source of income in which the battery uses for upkeep of the
club owned equipment and some of the registration fees. So if you participate
in one, you should try to participate in the other.
Long Range Match
The 17th Long Range Match will be held July 28
and 29th at range number 35 of the National Guard Range in Grayling
Michigan. Presently the Battery is planning on
entering one rifled cannon and 2 Coehorn Mortars. All
the shooting for these two events is on Saturday with the mortar match at 9 AM.
The cannon matches start at 10:15. The mortars will be fired at a target at 250
yards. The cannon will be fired at 1000 yards. The Battery
will need to make its own projectiles. It is too late to order them and the
cost of ordering them would deplete our treasury. For the Battery
to make projectiles we will need to make a projectile mold. This will have to
be done because of the new liner. The old liner was 2.9 inch and the new one is
3.0 inch. Dick will try to make the new mold but needs help setting up the
machinery. Presently the Battery is trying to
get this done. If you need directions and a map for the artillery match, please
contact the Commander.
Please note that the weekend of the artillery match is the
same weekend of the “Big canoe Race”. Hotels and such may fill up quickly. So if you are planning on staying in a hotel, call now and reserve
a room. Camping is allowed on range 35. There will not be access to a
shower building as in the past. Water will be provided by tankers.
Fall Nationals
The Battery received the invite for the 116th
National at Fort Shenandoah, which will be held October
5, 6, and 7th. It seems the Battery
will have a good number of people who are interested in participating. The
present invite may contain an error and it is said that a new invite will be
sent. More information will be forth coming on this event.
LaGrange Pet
Parade
The
battery participated in the 61st LaGrange Pet Parade. The theme was
Honor Our Flag and we marched with the 2nd USSS. This is Dan Davis’s
new group. The weather was good and the Battery
had some good numbers show up. Thanks for all who showed up. The battery earned
$400 which they shared with the 2nd USSS who matched the Battery numbers of members who showed up. The hope is
that the Battery will be invited back next
year and we can ask for a larger fee for both of the units.
4th Matuszek Memorial Skirmish
The Skirmish Director was happy that all the preparation
paid off. Nine members of the Battery showed
up one or more days to help. Everything ran smooth and the battery received
complements from most of the participants. The news would be better if the
weather was better but for those who were not there, it started to rain on
Friday night and did not stop until mid morning. This was enough to scare would
be individual shooters away. This year there were only 23 people who shot
individual targets compared to last years 40.
The weather also cut down the number of teams the whole weekend. In
short, there was poor attendance that cut down on the cost but also the profit.
A final report will be given at the next meeting.
A special thanks should and will be
given to the 2nd US Sharpshooters who stepped up and helped with
many of the unpleasant tasks. They had the frames put together by noon Friday.
They set up the poles for the barriers. They helped us safety during the
individual matches. At the end of the shoot, they transported the trash to the
dumpster. They helped stow away the target frames and other things. Their help
made the weekend easier for the Battery. In
honor of all their help, the Battery will be
throwing a thank you dinner at our campsite on Saturday at the 116th
National. They will be inspected as a new team and willing to celebrate their
officially becoming a team in the N-SSA. Right now they are considered a
probationary team.
Rumors Confirmed
It
was last reported that there were rumors that the Battery
will be asked to help run the 118th National Skirmish in the year 2008. This
rumor has been confirmed. Dan Gibson is the Skirmish Director and was made
aware of the good job we did on the Latrine duty. The Battery
got many great compliments on the job we did. For those of us that did it last
time know that this job is considered the most requested job out of all the
jobs. So rumors have it that we were requested to again clean the latrines The
Battery’s commander offered his services as Latrine Officer and it was reported
that is what he got. There will be more information to follow on this
subject.

Sick Call Report
The Commander is glad to report that Jack Hubbell has
improved. Jack is no longer at the White
Hall Rehab
Center and his daughters
continue to report his improvement. It is very doubtful that you will see Jack
on the firing line this year but he said he will try to attend the July 4th
parades and be as active as possible. Both Bob and Dick are also improving. At
this time the Commander wishes that no other member get sick or injured until
all others are healthy.
Recruitment
Opportunities.
Practice Shoot and Muster.
Battery H will be scheduling another practice at the Kenosha
Conservation Club in Bristol
Wis. This will also act as a
Recruiting Muster for possible new members. Letters will be sent out informing
past interested individuals that we will welcome them out to the range to try
out the different weaponry. The Battery will again
request that they RSVP prior to showing up at the primitive range. Due to the
busy Battery H schedule, this may not be scheduled until later this year.
