Isle Royale Adventure

Our journey began and ended at Rock Harbor in July of 1997. I had visited about 20 years earlier and loved the island. I had always hoped to return but never had the opportunity. My son, Paul, was old enough to withstand the strain of such a long hike, so with him and my good friend Gary and his son Michael, we ventured into the wilderness.

Before we left our homes in the Detroit area, we loaded up our full gear and did an eight mile practice hike around Kensington Lake. It let the boys (and Gary and me) prepare for the difficulties that lay ahead on the island.

I suppose for me it was a chance to prove I could still handle a wilderness hike. It was a great chance for my son and I to share a wilderness experience that few people ever do.

The following pages hold a few of the 200 pictures we came home with. Also included are some equipment recommendations that might help a new hiker's preparations.
