news.

This is my synopsis / treatment

by Michael Tillery

Clarence Reece's name could possibly have been aligned with the all time receiving greats of the NFL. Instead of the glory of a pro career and the ease of NFL retirement, he has been on a lifelong quest to tell his intriguing and dramatic story--a story which highlights the real deal of behind the scene shadiness of every day life at big time power USC.

The University of Southern California wasn't high on his list and used deception--shamefully through his mother--to get Reece to basically sign his life away.

What happened during his time there was absolutely criminal.

USC of the seventies was very similar to the team dominating college football today. He played during the era of Lynn Swann, Anthony Davis and Pat Haden. Reece was a speedy receiver that stretched the field at will, but nepotism and politics kept him on the sideline behind inferior talent--which just so happened to be the head coach's son.

Instead of taking advantage of his 4.3 speed, Coach John McKay went with J.K. McKay and the effect of such a blatantly obvious move caused seismic ripples throughout the team. His talent was never allowed to develop with the Trojans. Could you imagine the frustration of suiting up for a national power and not being able to show the world that you are the best receiver alive?

Being of strong will, Reece would not take no for an answer. He made sure anyone and everyone knew of his plight and even took his story to the L.A. Times.

Things were never the same again as USC went into cover up mode.

Reece went to the CFL for a year and later signed a 3 year deal with the Houston Oilers.

The NFL at the time had qualifying rules for players to protect the "integrity" of the league. In 1975, Commissioner Rozelle disapproved the contract between Clarence Reece and the Houston Oilers, on the grounds that Reece had not yet satisfied NFL eligibility requirements. Reece withdrew from the University of Southern California in 1974, following his sophomore year, and signed with the Canadian Football League for the 1974 season. In 1975, he signed with the Oilers. When the Commissioner disapproved his Oilers' contract, Reece filed an antitrust suit in federal District Court in Los Angeles, alleging that the NFL eligibility rules constituted an illegal group boycott, and was in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.

He was the first to fight the legality of the NFL's ruling. Players like Bernie Kosar, (NFL Draft Controversy) ... Michael Vick, who left Virginia Tech without graduating after three years, and became the top pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. Vince Young, who left Texas U. without graduating after three years... Then you have ... Reggie Bush, LenDale White and Dwayne Jarrett --coincidentally from The University of Southern California -- who left USC without graduating after three years ---owe a debt of gratitude because of the trailblazing efforts of Clarence Reece.

His story is one that could help an untold number of players unaware of what's in store when signing on the dotted line.

Clarence Reece sacrificed a good part of his life because of the disloyal activities of USC.

Now he has a story to tell....

I've already went to war with "the system" ... check these links out:

PROOF: ... click on NEWSPAPER ... EXHIBIT "A" ...  Age and Sports (I'm in the NFL section) ... NFL SLAVE-Contact

ALL Current NFL players should view these funky contracts !!!

The NFL should pay me for showing these funky SLAVE-Contracts for un-drafted Rookies. ... This was the going rate in 1975.

On the
John Madden Radio Show!!!
(KCBS 740 am)   ... listen to this:
John Madden Radio Show

Madden explained this NFL eligibility requirements stuff like no other.

It was like the pulling guard ... did a trap block  ... on the nose
tackle  .....BOOM ... Hit that hole up the middle!!!

I told them to take that Raggedy USC Scholarship ... & Shove it!

I've already earned a PHD in "Scandal & Nepotism in SPORTS" from USC.

My website started off as communications between old USC football buddies over that Maurice Clarett case and why my case against the NFL wasn't mentioned.

I kept adding stuff & it kept growing. Now I will keep adding until I write my screenplay in "Final Draft". … not my website. ... So this is now the gutted version of my old website, intergrading everything into script.

I must be writing correct enough to get my points across because I get a lot of feedback and attention on my story.

It reads a lot better when I tell this story seriously and how this affected my life.

I got to tell it "RAW".

I grew up in some very serious times & did some very serious stuff,  … This isn’t a nice story. … And I won’t be smiling if I was telling it to you in person. ... I would be like "The Horror ... The Horror" from Apocalypse Now.

I'm getting ready to speak my mind ... I'm not filled with anger and distrust towards a system that wronged me.

I might go with the title: ... "MLK Blvd: A USC Football Story".

It sums it up in a fell swoop and brings together so many aspects of what I  did; the idea of a continued fight; the memory and feeling of the big win.

A writer friend of mine said to me: "Be true to your school"

No matter how much anger, hatred and vehemence you bear, you can't beat the system, but sometimes, if you try real hard, you can change it.

If you have a story to tell, tell the right story.

I said: ... Ok k

You maybe right :-)

Let me take off my piss and vinegar stained glasses and put on some clear glasses.

I have a powerful story to tell of a time and place of injustice. ... College Football Recruiting is a big business still today.

My story is very interesting and timely, especially considering the on-going debate over age limits in the NFL and NBA, as well as concerning scandalous stories coming out of USC's football program.

About the shady practices that go on in the sports world that are never exposed.

This is a project that I'm really passionate about and a great story that needs to be told that can help others. ...the most important part is telling a cautionary tale about the college football machine, as these types of things happened to players all across the county.

That's the most proactive step I can take. ... I'm trying to make the dream of telling my story a reality and I have the passion to do it.

My story is one of conquest and love for a system that needed changing and that changed through hard work and efforts.

Looking back ... The  University of Southern California was a grand, elite school in the heart of the ghetto.

We helped to build USC brick by freakin brick.

Some of the best times in my life were spent at USC.

I'm still married for 33 years to the same girl that I met at USC our freshman year, her father was one of the first black brain/neurosurgeon in the USA. ... "The Love Story" ... except the roles were reversed ... She had the BIG money and stuff.

My younger brother Danny was dating Linda Johnson of Ebony Magazine - Jet Magazine ... Now she's a USC trustee.

I hadn't set foot on USC campus in 30 years ... Until my niece graduated from USC a couple years ago. ... She received her degree on Howard Jones field under a huge white tent ... the practice field for USC football ... Brought back a lot of Memories. ... "be true to your school" ... My wife and I walk around campus and it brought great joy reminiscing full of NOSTALGIA. ... remembering the good old days! ... where we first met, the dorms and stuff, etc.,etc.

I stop by to see Coach Willie Brown (he's was still there) ... He almost had a heart attack seeing me. ... He thought I was going to do a OJ Simpson on him. ... He was so nervous, he was shaking.

I think the film should start with those scenes; my niece's graduation, me and my wife walking the campus, and the meeting with my old coach.

The real villains in my story are Coach John McKay (The Godfather of College football coaches at the time) and the Black receiver coach Willie Brown, who recruited/trick me into coming to USC and brown-nosed up to coach McKay playing his son over me.

And this isn't about white or black ... It's about Evil-Doers in a system that needs change.

The Coach's son never had to compete for anything at USC ... Coach John McKay said: "I'm The Decider"

And Coach John McKay would later take his son JK McKay to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he "started" him there too... No player in the NFL  ... or ... at USC would ever say that they were "Beat-Out" by the Coach's son. ... This wasn't about competition, a test of skill or ability ... This was about pure Nepotism. ... And Racist too.

I don't blame or hate JK McKay or USC ... It was his father, coach John McKay that was all powerful.

This was the Nepotism move perpetrated on me. … Today I KNOW that Nepotism is a BADD thing. Just because Your father was once was President of the United States of America, that doesn't mean the son has earned the right to be President … or … would do a good job. ... I'm trying to explain Nepotism to you.

There's is so much I haven't told yet. ...Like the fact that I grow up in a all-white neighborhood in 1953 ... (As the story goes) ... My father who was a disable WW2 Navy Veteran ... While having bandages all over him laying in his hospital bed... after being blown-up off his freakin ship by Japanese Kamikaze Pilots ... Being pulled out from the sea.

My father checked the "White Box" for what race he was. ... That lead to us living four bedroom house with two huge backyards for us to play, run around, in a "All-White neighborhood... I was the only black person in all my elementary school class pictures. ... It took alot of courage for him to do that in 1953, the year I was born. ... It was Housing Desegregation way before it's time. ... Black student were "Bussed" into my high school for School Desegregation ... There's is so much I haven't told yet. (Watts Riot, High School, Houston Oilers NFL, etc.)

"Fight-ON" ... A True Football Story ... (maybe my title)

The University of Southern California had two Reece brother playing football for them at the same time ... and you know ... I don't believe that Coach John McKay never even shook my father's hand. ... Not even once.

My father ("L.D." Reece) wanted me to tell my story and hopefully make some money from it too, before he died a few years ago at age 84. ... That's my motivation.

I've overcome many adversities/obstacles and I'm nobody's victim.

I'm a survivor :-)

I've drove all the way to Anchorage, Alaska for a month... (I've seen a lot of stuff) after taking two cruises there. ... I don't follow the crowd. ... And I still walk the planet like Kwan Chang Canine in the movie Kung Fu, played by David Harradine. ... I'm still searching for that "peace-of-mind".

I've lived thru three NFL commissioners and a bunch of presidents.

Anytime you have a big dream ... some people will think you're crazy for having such a dream ... I once dreamed of playing football. ... They thought I was crazy for dreaming of going to a big college ... They thought I was crazy for dreaming of going to the NFL. ... They even told me that I couldn't sue the NFL. ...now some people might think I'm crazy for dreaming of telling my story. ... ... But I've found that "Life is But a Dream".

And I believe that NO ONE will be able to tell my story like me. ... I realize I have to finish my hot script/the full package ... there are no free rides, only hard work, that maybe one day may pay off, but I have to do what's in my heart.

Before Maurice Clarett !

... Before Reggie Bush & Dwayne Jarrett !

(Isn't it Ironic...from USC)

There was Clarence REECE !!!

I'm Telling You.....on page 466 of "Professional Sports and the Law",
written by
Lionel S. Sobel &
 forwarded
by (the late Great) Howard Cosell ... Chapter 7, ... entitled Discipline and Eligibility, the following footnote ... appears ... "Reaction of sports community to the Spencer Haywood decision":

"In 1975, Commissioner Rozelle disapproved the contract between Clarence Reece and the Houston Oilers, on the grounds that Reece had not yet satisfied NFL eligibility requirements. Reece had withdrawn from the University of Southern California in 1974, following his sophomore year, and had signed with the Canadian Football League for the 1974 season. In 1975, he signed with the Oilers. When the Commissioner disapproved his Oilers' contract, Reece filed suit in federal District Court in Los Angeles, alleging that the NFL eligibility rules constituted an illegal group boycott. When assured that neither the Oilers nor any other NFL team had encouraged Reece to withdraw from college, the commissioner rescinded his disapproval of Reece's contract; and Reece was thereafter permitted to report to the Oilers' training camp."

My former attorney, Lon Sobel

(The mentor type character ... Maybe Sean Penn as Lon)

He may look mild mannered ... But Lon was stomping on the NFL's
head in court ... kicking their Teeth in.

Lon Sobel was whooping up on the NFL like Muhammad Ali...(if Ali didn't like you     ...type of whooping)

Lon (Da Professor) Sobel wanted to finish the KILL on the& this NFL eligibility requirements, college draft stuff .... He told me I couldn't trust the NFL, they're just trying to find a way to get out of the Reece vs The NFL case ... And that this offer smelled fishy.

The NFL told Lon to ask me what I wanted??? ... I told them:

"ALL I wanted to do was play football"

... & get PAID!

The door to my dream of playing in the NFL was now kick open by force (Da Professor) & I Jetted thru the door at "Scotty gimme warp-12 speed". ... Against my attorney's advise.

(I should have listen to Da Professor.)

My three year NFL SLAVE-Contact (signed on 02/27/75) was so long that it drop to the floor.  ...

SOOooo they can understand their History ... & those who came before them ... & paid the price for where they are now.

The Houston Oilers jump-the-gun on this one ... And they TEASED me with Much-MO-MONEY to come in the future.

The NFL should pay me for showing that funky SLAVE-Contract for un-drafted Rookies. ... That was the going rate in 1975.

"The Horror ... The Horror"

I was Quoted:  Saying that I made more money Under-the-Table at the  University of Southern California than I did in the National Football League.

Football is a VIOLENT game ... And I was the "New Breed of Wide Receiver" ... I was muscle-bound ... fast as a cheetah ... and ... VIOLENT on my way to scoring touchdowns !!!

I was a defensive-back's worst nightmare.

Because I actually enjoyed hitting them on my way to scoring touchdowns. ... I would give them illegal fore-arms ... straight-arms & stuff if they got in my way. ... When you run at somebody in a full-speed collision hit ... somebody is gonna blink ... and I wasn't  blinking.

My mentality was ... you ain't hitting me ... I'm hitting you.

I'm running down the field thinking "Get Some ... Get Some"

I let the defensive backs know ... that I was faster , stronger, and more VIOLENT than them. ... I was very Offensive. ... I put FEAR in their Hearts.

Someone recently asked me if I ever took  steroids ...

I said: Nope I didn't knowingly take steroids in 1969 -76
... But USC team trainers gave us all kinds of pills & shots without telling you what was in them...Shots for the flu they tell you ... You had to line up in the training room and they would give each football player stuff.

I would use only dat WEED to medicate myself after being banged up after a game or hard bruising practice ... And everybody during that time had a "weed shoe-box" to clean the seeds from those $10.00 four-finger-width lids bags ... $20.00-$30.00 would fill your shoe-box up and last around a week or two.

(cut)

"I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn't like it. I didn't inhale and never tried it again."

(action)

I got to where I was in football on "Mind over Matter"... I would practice harder ... ALWAYS first in Wind-sprints in every practice at the end of the day .... While other players slept ... I would being doing sit-ups, etc. and thinking bout my next battle on the grind-iron field.

Even though It's physical and violent game ... I looked at it as "Mind over Matter". ... I was running with violent and crazy football players , looking back , they could of all been on a little something-something.

OOOoooh ... OOOooh ... How did I end up going to the  University of Southern California
???

Quote from the press:

"Clarence Reece was named the Harbor League's  MVP, ALL-City, ALL-State, selected to the California North-South Shrine All-Star Team, and  Sports Illustrated ALL-American nominee as Clarence Reece performed equally on offense and defense. Reece scored 77 points during the year and averaged 21 yards per catch. Reece  accounted for eight interceptions on defense."

(And I was the Kicker too)

The newspapers covering my High School days called me:

 "Mr. EVERYTHING"

Because... I had over 100 Universities offering me Scholarships, cars, clothes & stuff.

The 1st time I ever flew in airplane in my life .... Was on a recruiting trip.

And they were treating me like a ROCK STAR!!! ...The "State of California" had never ... Ever ... Seen the likes of the high school "Vince Ferragamo to Clarence Reece passing combination"

We could fill-up the stadium with screaming fans!

We had the Los Angeles Rams QB Roman Gabriel coming to our games!

He was checking us out ... We were that good.

I was starting to like this "Jet-Setting" recruiting stuff .....Having  little FINE Ladies showing me their campus ..(Bait.. Bait)

When I was being recruited by University of Oregon Ducks football program ... They wanted me to replace the great, Bobby Moore (Ahmad Rashād).

They drop me off at this recruiter student girl's dorm-room.

We "made-out" and petting, which included everything up to and short of sex, for hours and she  kiss my neck so hard that she left a big red hickey on my neck.

She said we would go "All-the-Way" when I came to the University of Oregon for good. ... I could barely walk when I left her room ... Stuff started backing up-on me, from not going "All-the-Way" with her... and I was in bad pain for around three hours after that.

This Oregon football player that drop me off at her room picked me up and I could barely walk around for the rest of the campus tour and meet with the Head Coach. ... I almost went to the University of Oregon to finish round two with that little lady. ... She got me bad in round one.

Right before my date to be wined & dined by UCLA & about 80 other Universities.

A USC Alumni Dentist (oral surgeon) from San Pedro, CA
... (nice fellow) ... sent a taxi to my house to pick me up for breakfast at the International House of Pancakes at around 6:00am (& a player from San Pedro High School was there too) ... told me to order anything I wanted ... I did ...whenever I hooked-up with a recruiter ... I would always order T-Bone Steak & Lobster ... They had T-Bone...

He was trying to Sell me on USC . ... At the end of breakfast while I'm trying to wash down my T-Bone Steak & Eggs with orange juice. ... He pulls out the "National Letter of Intent" for USC & wanted me to sign it at the table. ....(I wanted to "Pimp-Slap" him)... LOL ... But I Politely refused to sign.

That same morning: Receiver Coach from USC (coach Willie Brown) .... Had parked himself in front of my family's house .... Waited for my father to LEAVE for work in the wee hour of the morning!!!

Then he took advantage of my mother's lack of understanding on this deal ... sweet talking her ... Telling her that JK McKay was going to Alabama to play for Coach McKay good friend Coach Paul Bear Bryant ... & that's a FACT ... Jack .

NOW get this part.... Willie Brown gets my mother to sign my Life away .. by having her sign the "National Letter of Intent" .... because ... I was only 17 years old at the time ...

The Principal at Banning High in Wilmington, pulled me out of CLASS .... There was Willie Brown in the office ... he shows me my mother's signature & said: That she said to sign under her name.

That's the Honest-to-GOD-Truth !!! ... USC wasn't even on my Top 10 list :-(

When my father got home ... He said to my mother: "What have you done". ... That Willie Brown had LIED to her & waited for him to leave for work, to tell that LIE!!! ... Instead of Willie Brown talking to my father.

"The Horror ... The Horror"

We were The GREATEST Recruited Team in USC Football History !!!

The Recruiting Game is EVERYTHING !!! ... GREAT Players make a
GREAT Team.

Coach John McKay's real claim to fame ... Is that he knew that recruiting was everything !!! ... This is True even today at the University of Southern California.

We were the MOST Black Players ever to be let loose on the USC Campus ... The 1971 Freshmen team was the "Who's Who" of High School football in the nation. ... Coach McKay promised the Alumni VICTORY !!! ... (coming off so-so seasons ...two 6-4-1 seasons in a row... Black players were the answer.)

I was running like 4.3 .. 4.2 ... 40yard dash ... Could out-run Don Quarry .
(Jamaica's Olympic Hero) ... for the 1st 60 yards. (Quarry lived  across the hall from me my freshman year in the "Trojan Hall Dorms") ... Yeah Mon

I was driving a  Brand NEW White on White  Firebird ... & That's my word.

The All-Freshmen team met for the 1st time at this place across the street from USC ... named Julie's Restaurant ... We were told to each stand up in order & introduce ourselves ... Like in I'm Clarence Reece ... But ... You can call me "Pookey" ... etc., etc., ... This one dude got up & said his name was "BATMAN" from Gotham City... (I thought ... another Super-HERO) ... Everyone in the room Laughed Out LOUD ...& everyone called him that from that point on.

All the Black players back then hung-out in front of the "Tommy-Trojan Statue"  at USC ... Everyday that was our spot.

I think "Batman" should've went straight to the PROS out of High School.

Richard Wood

One example: .... Batman must have taken offense to this one Stanford player they tried to compare to him coming out of High School ... (the Stanford player played linebacker & fullback) ... SOOooo during the game Batman KNOCKS this player out COLD ... He didn't STOP there ... He proceeded  in Knocking out & .. or ... injuring the next four players that dared to take his spot.

The game must've taken four hours to complete. (don't move their head & neck type stuff delays ... while they laid out on the field) ... I said Batman: You MEAN Batman ... You MEAN ... You BADD.

We trying to get out of here & go to the "after the game party" & stuff.

Stop it !!! ...You made your point ...SAVE some of that. ... I don't know if he heard a word I said to him ... He was glaring across the Coliseum turf at them Stanford players.

He went on to become the first three time All-American for USC & the BEST Linebacker in USC History.

Off the field ... "Batman" was the nicest person you would ever want to meet.

NEWS-FLASH !!!

Richard "Batman" Wood, a three-time All-American linebacker at USC, was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame FBS Class of 2007.

Ok k

back to my story

I was Super-Starring  as wide receiver on The Greatest Undefeated All-Freshmen Team in USC History (1971 " Troybabes") ... Check the yearbook ... that was the last year of All-Freshmen teams  ... Anytime they wanted to throw the BOMB ... or ... wanted a 60-90 yard run & score .... they would throw or give the ball to me.

The rest of the time ... Pat Haden would throw the ball (short outs & ins) to JK McKay ... It was like Pat Haden owned JK's father Coach McKay a year's back RENT & Board for living at his house for FREE (TRUE).

His senior year in high school. ... Pat Haden's parents had moved to Northern California. ... Coach McKay Liked the way Pat would throw the football to his son, JK .

SOOooo Coach McKay let Pat Haden live at his house his senior year in high school ... Ought to be a Law.

We were the 1st Trojans to set foot in the Brand NEW Heritage Hall !!! They built Heritage Hall to attract  World Class Ball Players ... like me.

Me and this girl named (bleep) were the the first to (bleep, bleep) in the Brand NEW Heritage Hall, in this plush (now called) "Hall of Fame" room on the first floor, used mostly for alumni stuff. ... Yes we did.

When today's (2008)  USC  football players walk up from the dungeon of  Heritage Hall  locker rooms to go to practice. ... They march pass this USC "Wall of Fame" pictures.

You would notice  that 1971 was the year the USC "Wall of Fame" turned BLACK!!!  ... With mostly black players on the wall.

With Black football player taking over from that point on. ... You see all these white football players from the past. ... Then the color-line changes in 1971 to the present. ... Go look for yourself.

(When that 1972 USC picture was taken) ... One day me & Batman (Richard Wood)  was  sitting on some campus  steps by EVK.

I said Batman ...That's Opie Taylor walking on campus!...That's Opie Taylor from the "Andy Griffith Show"! ...You know he lives with his Aunt Bee.

Batman said his name was Ron Howard .... I said that's Opie from TV.

I wanted to slap Opie on the back of his head to welcome him to USC ... Batman said that wouldn't be cool.

That was the year USC
Changed ALL my grades ... Why?
Because I was the BEST Wide Receiver on planet Earth !!!

They later got into  some REAL trouble with the NCAA over that one.

(they give out grades like popcorn if you're starting on the team)

My locker .... My locker .. I sat between Lynn Swann .. to my left ... & that sorry, slow  JK McKay .. to my right.

Everyday I told Swann: "that I was "the BEST Wide Receiver on planet Earth" !!!

Now let's compete for that title...come on ... come on...I look to my right ... & Think ... How did you get here?
(at least in the Pros ... players were paid to play behind Jk McKay).

I'm gonna "Tell-All" of this SCANDALOUS USC Story in my up-coming screenplay ... (I don't want to be locked into a book)

And If JK McKay don't like what I'm saying ... He can pick up his Sword & Shield

And meet me at the Coliseum .... Because being  straight-up "GLADIATOR" is the True way to enter ... (understand me)

"Fight-ON"

The whole Harbor area would pay to see that one.

We could sell tickets & stuff.

J.K. McKay ..vs.. Clarence Reece

  vs.

same age(54yrs old) .... PLEASEEeee !!!

My cruise ship cabin was on the top floor and covered ... So I didn't have to worry about somebody drooling on my head.

I don't care if  you were Jerry Rice .. or ... Randy Moss ...or ... T.O.

You were NOT going to start in front of Coach John McKay's son at USC .. NO  competitiveness .... Only  Nepotism!!!

And Coach McKay said that he was not releasing me from my contract / scholarship. (like some schools do today)

While Pat Haden & JK got the good Hollywood/Beverly Hills summer jobs making BIG  $money$ .. doing nothing... Working as "Extras" in the Movies ... That was their job...Eating GOOD from them Movie Catering Trucks & stuff .... And you better not ask about Equal Jobs .... or .... Equal Anything!

Me & Marvin Cobb's  summer job was driving a

Truck (the 18-wheeler type) through Watts, Ca ...
I Didn't even have a California DRIVERS LICENSE then. (They didn't even ask) ... We were USC football players picked to work for Pepsi... driving up & down the Harbor Freeway.

One day we were ROBBED!!! (one guy in the street holding his waistband (like in GUNN) .. while the other two unloaded our Pepsi cargo ...

When we got back to the Pepsi plant to tell what happened ... Pepsi acted like we were supposed to defend & fight to the death over some soda pop / sugar water ...(I think NOT)

I've been drinking
ever since...

After that ... I told USC that I wanted to change jobs with Pat Haden & JK McKay ... Send them to work in Watts for a little bit ;-)

1973 ...  My Room-mate was Marvin Cobb.....Click the NCAA
(a football and baseball student athlete, played on four national championship teams, and earned Academic All-America Honors in 1975)

I TOLD Marvin back then ... they don't care about no academic nothing .... Get in the way of that $Money$ ...& find out.

Years later ... Marvin would sue USC and won a 12-0 jury verdict against USC for millions of dollars.  ... Marvin Coob vs. the University of Southern California.

USC hired the late, Johnnie Cochran, Jr. (O.J. Simpson's attorney) to defend them & still loss the 12-0 jury verdict against  USC. ... this is the one case that Johnnie Cochran, Jr. never wanted to include in his resume.

USC Said: The Hell with the jury verdict and never paid Marvin Cobb  nothing. ... USC has alumni even in the California Court system & California Supreme Court.

They "slipped-in" like the head of the USC Law School alumni  to sit-in as JUDGE on his case ... to get the case reversed on appeal. ... (It was as easy as changing grades).

SOOooo USC said: HELL NO Marvin Cobb ... You ain't ever getting paid.

 "The Horror ... The Horror"

OK k

Back to my story

Scouts & Agents were all over USC campus .... because they were stockpiling football players at USC ... (sort of like they are doing now).

The Scouts & Agents (crawling on USC campus like red ants) were sent to check out Lynn Swann...& they knew all about "Sam Bam" when I was there too.

But left saying ...... Did you see that Clarence "Pookey" Reece !!!

They said: That Pookey Reece is making defensive players look "Igg-Nor-Rent" on his way scoring Touch-Downs!!!

Before & After practice  ... They would stick their NFL scout and agent cards in my shirt pocket.

You better ask somebody ... A.D. ..(Anthony Davis) ... Marvin Cobb ... You better ask Lynn Swann.

Anthony Davis --- Notre Dame killer

In 1972, Davis ran for an astonishing six touchdowns in a 45-23 win against Notre Dame that led USC to a Rose Bowl win versus Ohio State and a national title.

I think A.D. ..(Anthony Davis) ... Might still be mad at USC ... for them giving Pat Haden the MVP in 1974 instead of him.

... All the Black Players on the team said: WHAT ???

Coach McKay got SOOooo upset with me...talking about JK to the Daily Trojan ,, LA Times ,, etc....this was before CNN & color pictures. (THEY KEPT THIS A LOCAL MATTER BACK THEN) ...& I was Holding court in front of Tommy-Trojan !!!

Because .... "the BEST Wide Receiver on planet Earth" !!! .... Felt he was being treated UNFAIRLY.

Like the Pharaoh of The University of Southern California

Coach McKay ordered ... that I be stricken from all the Record Books!!!

(LIKE I NEVER PLAYED VARSITY Football in 1973) .... But I can point out every game I played in & traveled to... (programs ... get your programs .. peanuts & hot dogs too)

I have the letter from NFL Headquarters, from then NFL Director of Personnel, (Jan Van Duser) ... Where USC stated that I played freshman football only ...Of course "Da Professor" got them straight on that one. ... Yep ... they said that ...To "COVER-UP" my 1973 year playing VARSITY Football for the University of Southern California.

Somebody was telling a Dirty-Dog lie. ... It was the University of Southern California that told that LIE.

Remember that Notre Dame 23, USC 14
October 27, 1973 - Notre Dame Stadium game ...

(I was suppose to "Start" that game!!!) .. Swann was handling his end ... JK was hurt that week. ... Somehow "Jack the Trainer" ... got him walking & stuff on game day.

On the bus ride to Notre Dame Stadium ... They had a life size dummy of A.D. (Anthony Davis)... with a noose around the dummy's neck hanging from a campus building.

Eric Penick's 85-yard touchdown run in the third quarter ends USC's 23-game unbeaten streak and denies the Trojans a second-consecutive national title. This game was a pivotal triumph in Notre Dame's 1973 championship season, as the Irish held Anthony Davis to 55 yards and dominated the time of possession, keeping the ball 40 of the game's 60 minutes. Bob Thomas boots three field goals in the game and the Irish defense keeps the Pat Haden - Lynn Swann combination at bay for the upset victory.

They tried to put me in with 20 seconds to go in the game.

I jerked my arm away from my receiver coach Willie Brown when he tried to put me in the game...  Coach McKay looked at me like I was Crazy.

If JK McKay could Limp through  the entire game & stand crying next to his father on the sideline.... He could surely Limp through the last 20 seconds ... now that there was No way to WIN !!!

(Looking back in time ... that was my exact " SUPERNOVA" moment ... I was dust in the Cosmic wind from that point on.)

JK knew that if I touched the ball & went BERSERK against Notre Dame ... People would talk & would SEE what the BEST Wide Receiver on planet Earth !!! ... was all about. ... JK wasn't Having that ... He was a spoiled brat ... But the FACT is ...

SOOooo I went into the game & we ran out the clock (didn't throw a pass to me)... game was lost. ...

Notre Dame stops USC's 23-game winning streak in 1973.

I put this video clip in to show everyone knew that JK was hurting that week ...including the Notre Dame players..... It was like putting a "Lame-Duck" out there .... That's how they were able to Triple-Team Swann .... & bring up those linebackers on AD (Anthony Davis).... Don't tell me about No "Team Stuff" ... This was one sorry game.

This was one sorry game. ... Nobody could cuss or yell at JK McKay after the game ... because his father was the coach

USC should've WON Three Consecutive National Championships back then. ... (1972-1973-1974)

(I believe a couple weeks later) ... I walked out of the Coliseum 30 minutes before the Stanford game ... instead of JK being hurt & me starting the game ....... they left all my locker stuff at USC & told me I was hurt ....(fake injury stuff).

"That was my last day as a "Trojan Football Player."

It might have been that USC "Daily Trojan" Story.... yet to come out....that caused them to pull that one. ... Titled: "Study in Contrast" ... In this Daily Trojan Story they put my younger brother in a position where he had to say everything was fine at USC. ... What else could he say.

I didn't even know my younger brother was going to be in the story.

The reporter ask me if I thought "JK McKay" was better than me at wide-receiver. .. I said: Not No ... HELL NO !!!

In that Daliy Trojan story:… I said that I was at the right place (USC) … But at the wrong time.

I told him that I was being treated unfairly and that I was trying to get out of USC and go to another college, maybe UCLA ... or ... University of Notre Dame ... Anywhere that I could play against USC.

After the story can out ... The University of Southern California student body said:  That this amounted to freakin Treason!!!!

God profaned!!! ... Flag desecrated!!! ... Motherhood defiled!!! ... Apple pie blasphemed!

Clarence Reece wanted to play for Who??? ...UCLA ... or ... University of Notre Dame.

There was HATRED  IN THE AIR !!!

The Black players on the team came up to me and said they didn't think I had the guts to say what I said.

I was pretty much Banned from campus after that.

USC don't put NO FEAR in my HEART !!!

They kept paying me my Scholarship $money$ for the whole year ...for housing , food , gas for the Firebird & stuff.... they cut it off once (for NOT going to one Class from the day I walked out of the Stanford  game)...

But ...I met with Coach McKay ...& told him that was not nice ... & gimme my $money$. .. I'll go to the press Dammitt.

The Scholarship $money$ continued even after I signed with the Canadian Football League .

Someone ask me why I didn't just transfer to another college ???

Back then ... I would of had to "sit-out" 2 years if I wanted to transfer to UCLA in the PAC 8 (now PAC 10) conference. ... "Sitting-out" 2 years of a football players life ... Is like "sitting-out" 5 years. ... That's how they control you. .. By this time I wanted to play against USC. ...

My high school quarterback Vince Ferragamo was at the University of California, Berkeley at the time ... in the same conference. ... He was 1 year behind me. ... He later did transferred to Nebraska Cornhusker football program. ... I think he only had to "sit-out" 1 year to transfer to another conference.

If a rich, regular student wanted to transfer from USC to UCLA ... No problem ... They do it All the time ... without having to "sit-out" no 2 freakin years either. ... They transfer right over to the other school without any time restraints.

I was sick and tired of the college football system and their unjust rules and stuff ... I wanted to go Pro / NFL right freakin NOW !!!

After I walked out 30 minutes before the Stanford game and the newspaper article about me came out in the USC "Daily Trojan" ... I stopped going to class ... I wanted to sue USC.

Complicating my life further ... USC and Coach McKay didn't want me to transfer to another school ... or ... they would of helped me do that. ... I guess he didn't like what I was talking about.

And trust me ... It wasn't about grades !!! ... They changed my grades before ... And they could have changed my grades again if they wanted to.

Back then ... Most of your Black NFL football players were coming out of Grambling College.

I contacted Coach Robinson and had several telephone conversations about transferring with the late, great, Grambling Head Coach, Eddie Robinson, who sent more than 200 players to the NFL and won 408 games during a 57-year career.

Grambling Head Coach, Eddie Robinson finally told me: "That he couldn't touch me without the "GOOD-Wishes" of Coach John McKay's ". ... (Coach McKay was like the "Godfather" of College Coaches back then)

USC  had to make an example out of me... for the others players / slaves to see.

The University of Southern California then started acting like the Ku Klux Klan  towards me.... (We need to make this movie)

I remember taking this Cinema class in the USC School of Cinema building.

The professor in this cinema class said it was mandatory to watch this movie called: "The Birth Of A Nation" (1915)

I freakin walked out of class during the showing of this movie and dropped out of that class ... This movie was glorifying the Ku Klux Klan ... And I wasn't going to "sit through"  this cotton-pickin, explicitly racist movie.

The white students were enjoying watching, clapping and studying this movie and eating popcorn like they were watching "Star Wars".

I think they're still showing students this movie to this day at the University of Southern California.

"The Horror ... The Horror"

Our workout jersey said: "Property of the University of Southern California"

.... I ain't your property....

They love to talk about your grades when they're trying to "do-you-in"

I told them: You changed my grades before ... So change them again DAMMITT  SOOOooo I can go to another college.

If my grades were that bad ... what was I doing traveling to & playing in All them games ???

They held grades over players heads to keep them on the plantation.

(they give out grades like popcorn if you're starting on the team)

What were they saying to me??? ... Were they saying that  they wanted me to get a freakin education ??? ... Yeah Right.

That why you can have a Dexter Manly  going through elementary and secondary schools and four years at The University of Oklahoma without learning to read or write ... on every major-college team in this nation.

There are some football players today that can barely read ... that can barely write. ... In college and the NFL.

Dexter Manly is a nominee for selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Getting his education was another matter ...

College Recruiting is BIG-Business ... If you rise to the "Cream-of-the-Crop" Top Best High School Football Player in America. ...The recruiters come after you. ... They come after you.

Football players don't apply to get into a University ... They Recruit you.

I had 100 colleges coming after me. ... They didn't care what your grades were like in high school. ... if you can't pass the SAT test ... They'll find somebody to take it for you. ...

They'll even change your grades too. ... Like USC did for me.

Are they saying they want you to get a freakin education ??? ... Yeah Right.

I was there to WIN football games at all cost ... And make USC money.

This wasn't about grades ... This was about me trying to get the Hell away from the University of Southern California.

Excuse me, but USC couldn't pay me enough to play behind the coach's  son ... JK McKay ... It was not in my Nature. ... Playing JK McKay in front of me was the biggest Fraud ever perpetrated in College Football history.

USC had me in a "Trick-Bag" situation

They trick and LIED to me into coming to USC ...  I couldn't transfer to another college because they didn't want to change my grades again.

I went to different lawyers to sue USC for this injustice and violating my civil rights and stuff.

But lawyers would tell me that suing USC was like suing General Motors, the world's largest automotive corporation and that I couldn't win.

I said DAMM. ... So what were my choices ???

And they were trying to act like the Ku Klux Klan  towards me to get me off campus.

USC was acting like a organized mob ... trying to intimidate me and stuff. ...They were cowards.

(click the above pic)

I'm telling you ... the Ku Klux Klan is still on USC campus ... They just change their name.

Those USC White Nation players deserved a "Beat Down" ... The Black players should of checked them.

This ain't no freakin "Joke".

During the height of slavery in America, the plantation owners did not allow their slaves to be educated. An educated slave, they knew, was a dangerous slave who posed a threat to the status quo. Knowledge is power in the hands of an oppressed people. The ruling clique has always found mass ignorance to their benefit. An ignorant public, they know, is an easily deceived and easily controlled citizenry created to do the bidding of Plutocratic rulers.

The first black slaves were introduced into the English-American colonies by a Dutch trader, who, in 1619, sold twenty of them to the settlers at Jamestown, Va.

Before the Civil War, southern planters and slave owners were among the wealthiest people in America.

White people brought Black slaves to America to pick cotton with FREE slave labor... plant and cut their sugar-cane with FREE slave labor ... Build their Plantation Houses with FREE slave labor starting some 400 years ago.

The University of Southern California & NCAA and other evil-doers wanted me to play for FREE ... I wanted to get PAID right freakin NOW !!!

I'm NOT going to Cotton-Pickin not one freakin grape for white people for FREE.

I don't care what Congress has to say about this issues ... Congress once supported Black Slavery & getting FREE slave labor.

It's SOOOooo  Igg-Nor-Rent ... It's like telling a Hip-Hop Artist that he/she has to go to college for three to five years before he/she can sign a record label deal and make that freakin money.

There was HATRED  IN THE AIR !!!

Alot of white people don't like me telling my True story ... reporters, coaches, NCAA, NFL owners and other evil-doers.

They hate uppity black men that stand up for their rights. ... Even today. ...But there is some SERIOUS Truth to my story.

NFL Owners who still like to buy, trade and sell somebody. ... I guess that's the ultimate power trip.

They treated me like a High-Priced Run-Away-SLAVE that left the plantation .... I ran  "North to FREEDOM" with The Saskatchewan Roughriders.

I was in Canada in 1974 ... when Coach McKay was going for his last  National Championship at USC.

USC called them (The Saskatchewan Head Coach said) &  must've said something like: He's a "RUN-Away" ... We'll go NUCLEAR on  Saskatchewan if they didn't send me back to the USA.

USC could NOT allow a announcer for the Saskatchewan Roughriders ... to announce that  ... Clarence Reece ... "the BEST Wide Receiver on planet Earth" !!! ... Was taking the field in the Canadian Football League .

When I had two years left on my USC Scholarship / Slave contract. ... USC could NOT allow this to happen.

What would the other slave/college football players think ???

I was getting ready to put Saskatchewan on the map. ...When they sent me back to the USA ...

"The Horror ... The Horror"

The Houston Oilers wanted to win a Super Bowl  BADD .... SOOOoooo they  signed Me to a three year contract on 02/27/75 hoping the other teams/owners didn't SEE what they just did ... As soon as I got back off the airplane ... (I was like 19 yrs old when I signed the contacts)

They said: With "Billy White-Shoes-Johnson" & Clarence "Pookey" Reece ... HELL YES!!! (that's how they talk in Texas)

The door to my dream of playing in the NFL was now kicked in and I Jetted thru the crack in the door at "Scotty gimme warp-12 speed". ...

Against my attorney's advise.

But  USC/NCAA/NFL  caught The Houston Oilers with their hands in the COOKIE JAR! ... (Because they're all in this together)

The NFL then Double-Crossed me once I got in and "stabbed-me-the-back". ... Then blacklisted me from playing again.

All the NFL did was slap the owner's hand (Bud Adams) & Implement the:

"We gonna Double-Cross  the Clarence Reece Plan."

OOOooh They Double-Crossed Me & "Stabbed-me-in-the-back" too.

What they did to me equated to them strapping me to a tree & with the crack of a whip ... whipping me till my back was raw and bloody ... for the other college football players slaves to see. ... (Everytime I hear the crack of a whip ... My blood runs cold)

These "Slave Masters" (college / NFL) were nothing nice ... nothing nice at all. ... I was a run-away slave ... And this is what they do to you.

Make an example out of me ... That's why it took 32 years before another case like mine would dare come before the National Football League in court. ... 2004-- Maurice Clarett vs The NFL.

Now it was the NFL and USC that could NOT allow a announcer for the Houston Oilers ... to announce that  ... Clarence Reece ... "the BEST Wide Receiver on planet Earth" !!! ... Was taking the field in the National Football League.

When I had now one years left on my USC Scholarship / Slave contract. USC and NFL could NOT allow this to happen.

What would the other slave/college football players think???

That's the heart of my story. ... Everything else stems from that. ... My fight to enter the NFL & changing the system / law stems from that. ... USC going on probation stems from that.

An illegal group boycott, & violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.

My  focus was ending the "Ending the exploitation of college football players for Cash." ... And "My Rights" to seek a Career / Go Pro.

 "The Horror ... The Horror"

HEAR me now ... NOT since the Cotton-Picking PLANTATION SLAVE DAYS of 400 years ago ... Has a business (USC/NCAA) reaped in SOOooo Much PROFIT !!! .... & PAY OUT SO LITTLE to the players/slaves.

The  NCAA collectively makes more $MONEY$ than the NFL ... They have more Teams ,,, more Stadiums ,,, more TAILGATERS ,,, more TV Contracts .... & ...Sell more Sport Apparel & Sport TRINKETS than the NFL.

& Don't have to PAY their worker/player/slaves nothing. ... The next time the Armored Trucks pull out from the Coliseum after a sold-out USC game ... someone needs to "Follow the $MONEY$"

They take ALL that $MONEY$ across the street back to USC first ... then start splitting, & cutting & dealing & All kinds of unspeakable stuff.

Splitting up the PROFIT ... "Follow the $MONEY$"

Ask Tiger Woods .. or .. LeBron James .... or ... Michelle Wie..... or ... Kobe Bryant
They would say:
"SHOW ME THE MONEY$"

And they didn't have to go & be exploited / play for a college for at lease 3 years (5 years when I was there) in college football."

College Football  is a "farm system," "farm club," or "farm team(s), for the National Football League." ... Yep I said That !!! ... And I ain't taking it back ... I said That !!! .

Like in Major League Baseball.

The purpose of the system is to develop players and make them available to play in the major leagues on demand.

In the case of College Football ... the purpose of this system is to develop players and make them available to play in the National Football League only after being  exploited by  college football for at lease 3 years.

This is a "WIN-WIN" situation for both College Football & the National Football League ... College Football gets at lease 3 years from these trapped / exploited players ... And the money they produce.

The  NFL   Benefits / Profits from the college football "farm system," "farm club," or "farm team(s)," that develop players and make them available to play in the NFL (On Draft Day) on demand.

This saves the NFL a lot of money ... Like in Billions !!!

This makes College Football a lot of money ... Like in Billions!!! ... And they don't have to pay their football players / slaves nothing.

I shouted to the sky above: Why ...  Why is Football the ONLY sport on planet earth that can violated the Sherman Antitrust Act, ... and place an illegal group boycott against me. ... WHY

USC LIED and TRICK me into going there ... And I didn't want to wait 5 years, (in my case) before going Pro and getting paid. ... They (NFL) wanted me at age 19.

I was messing up their (NCAA) Multi-Billion Dollar , $MONEY$, exploitation of the Black Athlete business.

My younger brother, Danny, (defensive back) was the 1st freshman to "Start" on the varsity team in USC History!!!
(started in every game that season) ... He didn't have but a fraction of my Skills on the football field ... Coach McKay used him as a "Back-Shield" ... Taking my brother to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with him for several  years. ... (because I was still MAD).

My other brother Severn (wide receiver) was a "Starter" for UCLA ... They actually PLAYED & Lined-Up Against each other in the Coliseum...  in "The Big Game" -- "USC vs. UCLA" (1976)

And how did Coach Mckay's other son ... Richie McKay .... who was the "Ball-Boy" when I was at USC ... Become a General Manager and President in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons??? ... & "The Great Jim Brown" can't even get a job with the NFL ...

What's up with that ???

Richie McKay like his brother JK McKay is good example of Nepotism in SPORTS ... Just because your daddy was President of the United States of America ... doesn't mean the son will be a good President.

Lets see ... Richie McKay was the  General Manager (Slave Overseers) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ... after his father handed down the job to him.

Richie made an example out of  former USC football play Keyshawn Johnson ... for talking and being uppity.

The Bucs said they would deactivate Johnson for the remaining six games. He will be paid his full salary and was not fined, general manager Rich McKay said.

This was an example for the the other players/slaves to see.

Even though Keyshawn Johnson helped the Bucs win the Super-Bowl ...

The message was: They trying to get these "Uppity Negros" minds right.

They paid his full salary to show that he would not play ... if they didn't want him to play. ... It's not about competition and pay/money ... It's about "Who's in Control" of this plantation.

NOW !!! ... Isn't it ironic ... That Richie McKay is now the General Manager and President in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and this Michael Vick stuff.

SMITHFIELD, Va. -- Police conducting a drug investigation raided a Virginia house owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and found dozens of dogs, some injured and emaciated, as well as items associated with dog fighting, authorities said.

State Police Sgt. D.S. Carr said Vick's relative, Davon Boddie, 26, lives in the house. Vick owns the property, but does not live there and was not present when a search warrant was executed in a drug investigation Wednesday night, Carr said.

Boddie was arrested outside a nightclub by Hampton police April 20 on charges of distribution of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute. The search warrant was executed by a multi jurisdictional task force in a narcotics probe, Carr said.

"When they had a chance to go to the site, they discovered animal neglect," Surry County Administrator Tyrone Franklin told WAVY-TV in Portsmouth.

They went to his house for a "weed bust" ... They didn't find any freakin weed. ... They found some fighting dogs.

You know "Cock-Fighting" (fighting chickens) is against the law ... In 33 of the 48 states where cockfighting is illegal. ... The State of Virginia has elevated the offense to a Class 1 misdemeanor, with a maximum penalty of a year in jail.

After the Virginia police and FBI arrest you for cockfighting ... They go home and have a freakin chicken dinner.

"Bull-fighting" is  illegal in Virginia ... After the Virginia police and FBI arrest you for Bull-fighting ... They go home and have a freakin steak dinner.

Richie McKay is in the mix here.... Keyshawn Johnson ... Now Michael Vick.

Last season, Vick flashed an obscene hand gesture to heckling Atlanta fans (gave them the middle finger) as he walked off the field following a dismal loss to New Orleans. He was fined $10,000 by the NFL.

Here you have Michael Vick, worth around $150 million dollars ... going to jail for cockfighting... Now Richie McKay wants the money back.

The message is: The NFL is trying to get these "Uppity Negros" minds right. ... Make a example here of Michael Vick. ... There is some racist stuff going on here ... If they can't bust you for weed ... They will bust you for cockfighting.

What they did to Michael Vick equated to them strapping him to a tree & with the crack of a whip ... whipping me till his back is raw and bloody ... for the other NFL football players / slaves to see. ... (Everytime I hear the crack of a whip ... My blood runs cold)

If you don't believe what I'm telling you ... Just look what happened to  Black people during the Hurricane Katrina ... The horror in New Orleans has exposed the United State's dirty secrets of race and poverty.

Kanye West said:  ... "George Bush doesn't care about black people"

This country has created a culture of racism and prejudices based on a clash between religious fervor and intolerance of religious difference and diversity ... American culture and race. ... Culture of corruption ...which has just been magnified during the past 8 years.

Our 10-Trillion-Dollar Debt would have been much better used to help all the Hurricane Katrina victims and the American people. ... Our 10-Trillion-Dollar Debt is the cost of us trying to dominate the world's oil supply and other "people of color" countries and resources.

The phrase evil empire was applied to the former Soviet Union by U.S. President Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr., and American conservatives,  particularly "hawks" (They had a lot of Right-Wing conservatives at USC when I was there).

Maybe "We the People" should look in the mirror ... America could be becoming that evil empire that we were once so scared of.

The one thing I do know ... Is that this Iraq War was based on a freakin LIE. ... Like the Vietnam War ...Like Yogi Berra would say:

"It's like déjà vu all over again".

I'm telling you ... There's a need for Black Owners in the NFL !!!

The NFL talks about "It's a Privilege"  to play in the NFL.

I can ensure you that every Black football player has earned their way into the NFL.

They use to tell slaves that  "It's a Privilege" to work on the plantations.

"It's a Privilege" NOT to have any Black Team Owners in the NFL. ... Only White Owners.

 That's the cotton-picking Truth.

I'm handing off the NFL baton to my friend Anthony ... Here's his background & link to his future "Best Seller" book: ... Click on the cover below & read his book.

Anthony Prior, Author and NFL Veteran

Ok k

back to my story

I don't know why the NFL & Legal World keeps skipping over my 1975 lawsuit ?

It could of helped in the Maurice Clarett case & cases to come in the future.

Timeline

1968 Summer Olympics

BLACK POWER

Tommie Smith (center) and John Carlos stare downward with arms raised during the playing of the "Star Spangled Banner" in protest at the 1968 Olympics ... I was PROUD of them for bring attention to plight of Black People in America  ...

This timeline shaped my thinking back then. ... James Brown was telling us to:

"Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud" in 1968 ... We were feeling it.

Black Athletes were suppose to keep their mouths shut & grin-on-cue back then.

1970 — Curt Flood vs. Major League Baseball

His major claim to fame is becoming one of the pivotal figures in the sport's labor history when he refused to accept a trade following the 1969 season, ultimately appealing his case to the U.S. Supreme Court. Although his legal challenge was unsuccessful, it brought about additional solidarity among players as they fought against baseball's reserve clause and sought free agency.

While he never found his way to oblivion, Flood never got his due as a player, either. But a generation of players later benefited from Flood's fight, which touched off a firestorm that destroyed the reserve clause that had bound ballplayers to one team like, as Flood would say, "slaves."

His were bold words for the time.  By all accounts, he was one of the best outfielders of his era.

Curt Flood:

If the newspaper was typical, it lied that a victory for Flood would mean the collapse of our national pastime. God propane! Flag desecrated! Motherhood defiled! Apple pie blasphemed!

1971 — HAYWOOD VS. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

Haywood at right

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NBA does not enjoy the same exemption from antitrust laws as Major League Baseball does. Prior to losing this case in 1971, the NBA required graduating high school players to wait four years to become eligible to play in its league. The rule did not require a player to attend college or place an age restriction on players entering the league. The case was brought by Spencer Haywood, who did not go to college and was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics less than four years after his high school graduation. Haywood contended the rule violated the Sherman Antitrust Act.

All on them NBA Players like  Kobe Bryant & LeBron James that went to the NBA straight out of high school, own Spencer Big-Time.

They should Drop to their knees and Bow & throw money at him ... when Spencer walks by them ... For him making it possible for them.

1971 Clay vs. United States

Muhammad Ali's appeal of his conviction for refusing to report for induction into the United States military forces during the Vietnam War. His local draft board had rejected his application for conscientious objector classification. In a unanimous 8-0 ruling, the United States Supreme Court reversed the Fifth Circuit court's affirmation of the conviction.

Ali  famously said, "I ain't got no quarrel with those Vietcong" and "no Vietcong ever called me nigger."

I understood what Ali was talking about ... Sometimes you have to tell it like it is... Ali made "people of color" PROUD around the World !!! ... He's the Greatest of All-Time.

White people said Ali talked too much back then ... He even talked to you while he was whooping you in the ring.

So if you can't whoop him...The United States tried to Jail him.

I entered the University of Southern California in 1971. ... SERIOUS stuff was happening then.

 1974 The Fight for Freedom

Ed Garvey was the first Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA).

During his tenure with the NFLPA, Mr. Garvey and the organization successfully established that the National Football League was subject to federal antitrust laws, and he established the all-important concept of using a percentage of the gross revenues as the basis for paying the athletes.

The issue is power and who will control pro football. Is it going to be Pete Rozelle, or is it going to be Ed Garvey?"

NO FREEDOM, NO FOOTBALL, ... The NFLPA had gone on strike during training camp of 1974.  The players agreed to comeback and work without a contract.  Before the the final exhibition game.

Potential Chaos. If the players win, pro football would become an open market with supply and demand as the only restriction on a player's movements. "Why shouldn't we be like the guy at the Ford plant who wants to go work at General Motors?" asks Alan Page. "They do it every day and the System hasn't collapsed."

But to sum things up ... In 1974 ... The NFL owners were starving the NFL players and hire some strike-breaking scabs and had a exhibition season anyway ... The NFL Owners said that the scabs may be hired as permanent replacements.

It was a classic union busting campaign ... Everyone had to watch the scabs players on Sunday.

The Players strike lasted for 42 days during training camp but return as defectors cross picket lines. ... I'm telling you ... they were starving out the players  and self greed won over Ed Garvey and the Union / NFLPA.

The ensuing standoff lasted through the 1974, 1975 and 1976 seasons.

1975 REECE VS. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The NFL Owners view me as a run-away from college troublemaker and stirring up strife in the league. ...

Like Flood said ... If the newspaper was typical, it lied that a victory for Reece would mean the collapse of  the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

God profaned! Flag desecrated! Motherhood defiled! Apple pie blasphemed!

These were SERIOUS times. ... As I fought to step on the field with the Houston Oilers.

An NFL spokesman in New York defended this policy to the Los Angeles Times (on May 17, 1975 .. Viewpoint section) on grounds it was intended to prevent raiding colleges of superior talent (me) early in their collegiate careers.

It seems the NFL spokesmen were more honest back then.

Now they talk about players being too young & tender !!!

There was a lot of stuff going on in these serious times and I was fighting for my very life ...I was fighting for my very life. ... You have to FIGHT !!!

I was fighting  a vicious WAR between the USC/Big-Time College football, NCAA, NFL Owners, and the courts to set free the college football slaves.

They claimed it was a AGE thing ... At age 18 years old they tried to  DRAFT me (my draft# was like 11) into the freakin Vietnam War !!! ... My second year while still at USC.  ... (I'll tell how I got out the Draft in my screenplay).

How could I be old enough to be sent to Vietnam War to be killed ... And not be old enough to play in the NFL ???

I got caught up in this "Perfect Storm" of injustice in sports.

The National Football League Players Association couldn't help me back in 1975, they were too poor and pitiful / pathetic at the time. They were fighting the NFL Owners for money for food to eat ... We talking real poor and under-fed stuff here .

But look at the NFLPA now ... They act like they over-fed.

The NFL Owners are hell-bent on acting like my case never happened to this day.

They still have to cover-up this case because it was a illegal boycott against me, that was in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. ... And they were violating my equal rights and justice.

On April 29, 2007 the NFL Draft ... Amobi Okoye, the 19-year-old defensive tackle from Louisville, was taken 10th overall in the 1st round Saturday by the Houston Texans. Okoye is the youngest player taken in the first round since the merger in 1967.

The 6-foot-1, 300 pound player entered college at 16 and won't turn 20 until June 10.

(Isn't it Ironic...The Houston Texans signed Amobi Okoye & The Houston Oilers signed me ... It's a Houston thing.)

SOOooo  college football, NFL & the press can't keep telling  that LIE about about players being too young & tender !!!

I entered USC at  age 17 ... wanted to go the NFL at age 19.... Dammitt.

I say the rule should be: You can play any sport .. at any age ... if the Pros are willing to pay you.

1976 — John MACKEY VS. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

A U.S. District Court ruled the NFL's "Rozelle Rule," which allowed the commissioner to determine and award compensation to a team losing a free agent, was in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, thus ending the reserve system for the league.

Did the NFL Player's Union sell-out the FREEDOM to pursue employment/careers for younger players... for bigger pay check$?

(I don't know what the NFL Player's Union was collective bargaining for in 1975-6 that  lead to the "MACKEY three prong test"  from the "Hardship Draft" ... But it sounds funky)

32 years later from my Reece vs. the NFL case

2004-- Maurice Clarett vs. NFL

Professor Robert McCormick’s longstanding interest in the NFL’s draft-eligibility rule has recently generated significant media attention in light of its application to Maurice Clarett, a sophomore star running back now at Ohio State University. The NFL rule currently precludes any player less than three years removed from high school from entering the NFL draft.

Professor McCormick first wrote about this rule with Professor Emeritus Matthew C. McKinnon in their 1984 article titled “Professional Football’s Draft Eligibility Rule: The Labor Exemption and the Antitrust Laws,” published in the Emory Law Journal. In that article, the professors argued the NFL rule violates the Sherman Antitrust Act and is not saved by the labor exemption to the antitrust laws.

The issue has recently arisen again with regard to Maurice Clarett, a gifted football player. He was voted the number one running back in college football by The Sporting News in its College Football Yearbook. In addition, he was a first-team All-Big Ten selection and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He finished his freshman year with 1,237 yards and 18 touchdowns and led his team to the national championship against the University of Miami. Although Clarett is sufficiently talented to earn millions of dollars playing for the National Football League, the NFL owners have agreed among themselves not to permit him, or any other underclassman, to enter the draft. McCormick asserts their rule against early entry is an anticompetitive restraint on trade, undertaken to protect the free farm system of college football.

Professor McCormick has again argued that the NFL draft-eligibility rule is illegal in his recent article titled “Open Letter to Maurice Clarett: Why You May Turn Professional Now,” published on August 17, 2003, in the Sunday New York Times.

Flashback to mid-August, and McCormick decided to become embroiled in the biggest challenge to the NFL's draft laws since Herschel Walker in 1983. McCormick authored an article in support of Clarett's attempts to change NFL draft law, much like he had done 20 years earlier in favor of Walker.

"This is a bigger deal than I had realized, so I decided to do another article for The New York Times," McCormick said. "I did it in the form of an open letter to Maurice Clarett.

"I explained to him why I believed the draft eligibility rule was illegal and why if he decided to challenge the rule, I thought he would win.

"Shortly after, I received a call from Alan Milstein, who is head counsel in the case."

Since then - most importantly on Sept. 23 when he, Clarett and the legal team filed a lawsuit against the NFL seeking to abolish the draft eligibility law - it's been his job to explain just why Clarett deserves to play on Sundays.

McCormick said the current law was in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. The act states "every contract, combination or conspiracy in restraint of trade É is declared to be illegal."

"This is obviously a contract that restricts trade in the sense it restricts Maurice Clarett's ability to exchange his skills," McCormick said. "It's pretty clear in my view. The only question is if it's exempted from the antitrust laws."

Proving it isn't exempt from the Sherman Antitrust Act will be the primary concern for Clarett's legal team.

McCormick, though, seems unfazed and tailor-made for such litigation.

"There were a lot of legal questions arriving in sports. This was 20 years ago and I was probably one of the first people in the country to organize a sports law course."

In the meantime, McCormick has served as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, taught at the University of Colorado, written a sports law textbook and been published in a handful of law journals and reviews.

Although McCormick represents Clarett and maintains his status as one of the nation's largest proponents of early-entry professional athletes, some aren't as sure Clarett made the right decision.

But for McCormick, the situat
