Jerry's email update on the fight for Equal Rights (October 14, 2005)

Very quiet on the petition front as work continues to gather signatures.
-Allegations of fraud being investigated
-More marriage opponents write editorials

Friends,

It has been very quiet in the news on the status of the effort to gather 66,000 signatures to get a proposed ban on same sex marriage on the 2008 ballot in MA.  I'm not exactly sure what that means.  I can tell you that I was approached to sign, this past weekend at the South Shore Plaza mall, in Braintree MA.

The legislature’s Joint Committee on Election Laws will hold a hearing to consider potentially fraudulent activity on Tuesday, October 18.  I have heard a few reports on an investigation into fraudulent methods to gather signatures, but I am not sure just how strong the arguments actually are.

In the meantime, we need to focus on educating the public.  I have read editorials this week from people who just clearly do not understand the facts, and form other people who confuse the legal protections of civil marriage with the religious sacrament. They speak with uneducated (nice way of saying ignorant/bigoted) opinions stating they believe only different sex couples make a marriage "just as it has been for thousands of years" (so many things wrong with that statement I could write a book to counter.)  I have also seen the comments that the only right way is confirm this is by letting the people vote on the matter (with obstinate people not willing to consider or even learn the facts vote on something as important as protection of other families?...)

There is no reason that each editorial against us cannot be countered by at least 3 letters of support.  If you cannot - or already have written a recent article, then PLEASE talk to your friends, get them to write in.  It does not take a lot of effort.  SPECIAL THANKS to our friend Tim Eagan for getting his letter published last week! (Read it here)

Checkout an editorial this week in need of rebuttal:

READER'S VIEW: Church is right on gays
I agree with what the church is doing as far as gays is concerned. I think marriage is between a man and a woman - always has been and always should be.

SECOND REQUEST:

FRIENDS, PLEASE SPEAK OUT!...
Its not too late to send in editorials to try to better educate the public!... PLEASE TRY

So far I'm aware of 3 people on this distribution list that have had letters published, our friends Paul and Jim from Randolph and Quincy, and our friend David in Attleboro.  WE NEED MORE!... I read two extremely ignorant letters just this week in my local paper.  There are EXCELLENT facts that you can use in your argument on http://www.knowthyneighbor.org/talk.html and on the Human Rights Campaign website.

Allegations of trickery over signatures not new

The charges by supporters of a wine sales ballot initiative that they were tricked into signing petitions aimed at banning same-sex marriages in Massachusetts have drawn headlines across the state, an apparent investigation by the attorney generals office, and an uproar among gay rights activists and election law reformers.

But allegations of impropriety by contractors hired to collect petition signatures are nothing new.
