Jerry's email update on the fight for Equal Rights (January 13, 2005)

Gay Marriage Tops Vatican’s 2005 Agenda

...we did make one small advance in Illinois

Friends,

Here we go again; with horrible events occurring around the world, in need of attention, the Pope himself has chosen the fight against civil marriage protections for gays and lesbians as being the top of his agenda.  This is just one of the main headlines seen this week as our battle for equality picks up again in 2005.

Education will be key in 2005.  We each need to reach out and educate at least one new person this year on the fact that providing equality to EVERYONE poses no threat to ANYONE.
I encourage all my GLBT friends to come out to someone new this year and my straight friends to speak out to someone new in support for your friend's civil rights.

My New Year's resolution is to avoid covering up who I am, and who I am married to.  This is not easy as I have used caution and hid who I am for over 30 years which has become a bad habit, difficult to break. I will make new friends under honest circumstances and educate current acquaintances.

Vatican City — In a year marked by terrorism, natural disasters and culture wars, Pope John Paul II said lobbying against gay marriage was at the top of the Vatican’s agenda for 2005..

In his annual message to Vatican diplomats, the 84-year-old Pope, whose health has been failing in recent months, condemned the rise in pro-gay legislation and the growing acceptance of gay laws granting partial or full marriage rights to same-sex couples.

HRC RESPONDS TO POPE’S COMMENTS ON MARRIAGE.
“Our families are threatened by a lack of legal protections,” said HRC’s Lisa Bennett, who directs HRC’s Family program. “All families deserve equal protection under the law. No religious institution will ever be forced to perform marriages with which they disagree. This is about loving, caring families who should be treated equally.”

Gay Attacks In Media Rise
(New York City) Less than a week into the new year and attacks on gays in the mainstream media are on the rise... Syndicated columnist Thomas Sowell this week in an attack on same-sex marriage wrote that " it is not even clear how many homosexuals actually want marriage, even though gay activists are pushing it. What the activists really want is the stamp of acceptance on homosexuality, as a means of spreading that lifestyle, which has become a death style in the era of AIDS."

Kennedy says Democrats should have talked more about values
"We were remiss in not talking more directly about the fundamental ideals that guide our progressive policies," he said. The Human Rights Campaign is sending this update to keep you informed about your elected representatives views on issues important to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Senator Edward Kennedy made the following comments on GLBT equality during an address today on the future of the Democratic Party at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

Civil Marriage
"On the issue of gay rights,
I continue to strongly support civil marriage. We cannot-and should not-require any religion or any church to accept gay marriage. But it is wrong for our civil laws to deny any American the basic right to be a part of a family, to have loved ones with whom to build a future and share life's joys and tears, and to be free from the stain of bigotry and discrimination."

Workplace Discrimination
"A progressive economy also recognizes that Americans don't just want more. They want more of what matters in life, which is the true American dream.

They want greater flexibility on the job, with more time for their families, more time for their children's schools, more time to volunteer in their communities and churches and synagogues and mosques. They want jobs that pay fairly and don't force them to work excessive hours without extra pay. The want safe workplaces and the right to join with fellow employees to bargain for a fair workplace. They want companies to stop marketing cigarettes and unhealthy foods to young Americans. They want workplaces free from all forms of bigotry and discrimination, including discrimination against gay and lesbian Americans.
