2006 Election Preview: New England focuses on gay marriage

Friends,

Belated, Happy Martin Luther King Day...  I was glad to see a lot of focus on our rights, as well this year. The continuous seesaw of wins and loses for equality tipped slightly in our favor this week, in several areas of the country.  In Maryland, a judge ruled that the state's ban on same-sex unions is unconstitutional, in Washington state, a new anti-gay discrimination law was approved, and in New Jersey, after initial refusal, a lesbian's police officer's dying wish for her partner to receive benefits has been granted.

Looks like this good news will be very short-lived as several efforts of our opposition are picking up steam. Including a new constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage in Pennsylvania.

2006 Election Preview: New England focuses on gay marriage

MASSACHUSETTS AND NEW HAMPSHIRE POLITICS POSE THE GREATEST TESTS FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY, BUT RACES ACROSS THE REGION ALSO PROMINENTLY FEATURE SAME-SEX ISSUES; ELECTION DAY IS NOV. 7.

GLBT activists continue to focus race by race, legislator by legislator, to tally the votes needed to stop this latest attack on marriage equality. This year, the combined House and Senate only needs 50 votes to pass the amendment on to the next step. That means that gay marriage supporters need 151 votes. A special election on Feb. 7 could help consolidate votes by then. And the retirement of several long-time legislators, including anti-gay marriage Rep. Philip Travis (D-Norton), there are plenty of opportunities this Fall to garner more support for the future.

Framing the debate

Will the coming argument over marriage rights be about morality or hospital visitation rights?..

On one hand the announcement of the so-called “Benefits Fairness Act,” by state Rep. Phil Travis (D-Rehoboth) and VoteOnMarriage.org looks like a final act of desperation by anti-equality forces fighting a losing battle to pass a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in a state where most people seem to have accepted, if not embraced, the reality of the marriages of same-sex couples. On the other hand, changing the subject to a sterile discussion of rights and benefits — a definite non-starter in efforts to defeat anti-gay-marriage ballot initiatives —is a great way to undercut the heretofore successful case LGBT advocates have made that the right to marry is about much more than a benefits package. The question now is, will opponents of marriage equality succeed in reframing the issue to their advantage? That depends on whether marriage equality activists let them...
