Jerry's 2007, Update on the Fight for Marriage Equality

150,000 SIGNATURES!
THE TIDE IS TURNING!..
...but is it turning fast enough?
(...ONLY with your help!)

150,000 SIGNATURES!

PLEASE HELP THE PUBLIC KNOW THE REAL NUMBERS!
The press continues to misquote the inflated number of 170,000 signatures on the discriminating petition.

ONLY 120k petition signatures were certified (thousands of which have been identified as fraudulent)

This number should get out to the press and to the public!...

MA VOLUNTEERS, not hired "bait and switch" professionals from out of state, have delivered 150,000 signatures to our legislature in support of marriage equality!

THANK YOU AGAIN TALLESSYN! for ANOTHER letter of equality in the Patriot Ledger...

Other friends,

Please take note, that you don't need to be from my area of MA anymore to get a letter to the editor published. PLEASE help to counter the anti-gay comments being printed and to help educate the general public. You can take a look at the recent letters in my "Editorial Watch" below for inspiration then submit your own letters.

I have one other significant update this week...  I have learned that MassEquality has delivered 150,000 postcards for equality to the MA State House. We can now counter the anti-gay argument that "the people have spoken and want to vote."  That is, that for the first time since the January 2, vote in favor of the amendment to take away our marriage protections, I HAVE FINALLY REGAINED HOPE that we can win this fight, without having to worry about our dignity being put up for a popular vote.

Though I repeat, this cannot happen without the help of every person on this list...  Inside mass and out- Gay or straight.  We NEED to send a public message to our legislators that majority is against this amendment.

To those who have been working hard all along, PLEASE don't give up.  We need to keep trying, though our focus needs to slightly shift.  We need to start encouraging and carefully pressuring friends, family and colleagues to help us.

If you have comments/feedback that I should include next week, please feel free to use the feedback link to the left.

Lexington parents to appeal ruling
Two families who unsuccessfully sued Lexington town officials, accusing them of trying to “indoctrinate” their children at the Estabrook Elementary School with the idea that “homosexuality and same-sex marriages are moral” have appealed U.S. District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf’s Feb. 23 ruling. David and Tonia Parker and Rob and Robin Wirthlin alleged in their lawsuit that Lexington Public Schools violated their right to freedom of religion and to direct the upbringing of their children by including material in the classroom that conflicted with their religious beliefs. In dismissing their lawsuit, Wolf ruled that the Constitution does not give parents the right to determine the curriculum in the public schools. The appeal is expected to be filed in the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals. (Read More)

Progressive Christians see hope for gay marriage
UA progressive Christian organization held a winter symposium on Feb. 23-24, at First Church in Cambridge, offering up an ecumenical, liberal vision of the Christian tradition, gay marriage, and political action - one not often heard in public discourse.

Incorporated in Massachusetts, the Institute for Progressive Christianity (IPC), an academic think tank, sponsored the event, which drew about 50 people.

"The message of Christianity has to be for full freedom and equality," said Richard Parker a lecturer at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, who also urged attendees "to be who you are, the emerging majority of progressive Christianity" and not to be defined "in reaction to the last 30 years" of the Religious Right's ascendancy in American politics. Anti-gay groups have been watching the editorial section of the South Shore's Patriot Ledger and noticing that letters WERE starting to lean in our favor.  Since my last newsletter, 3 anti-gay letters have been published that need our response... if 3 are published against us, then we need to strive for 6 more for us.  We NEED to send a public message to our legislators that majority is against this amendment.  I cannot stress enough, that it is the legislators in this area that a critical to killing the amendment.  PLEASE WRITE IN... OR... Ghost write for friends and submit for them (with their permission of course as they will need to respond with a final OK when the paper contacts them)
